BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY MARCH 12TH

BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY MARCH 12th         (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some gristle to chew on for a start:

  1. This coming Saturday, Pennants will shift to Bargo where the Bowral Grade Six side will take on the locals. After their defeat last Saturday at Bundanoon, the Waratahs will need to regroup, get shots in the head and battle hard to retain their second position on the competition table. Bowl well, and don’t slip up; leave that to the Picton Razorbacks!
  2. Committeeman Ian Duncan is putting some final touches to a strategic plan for the Men’s Bowling Committee to present to the Board of the Bowral Bowling Club Inc. The Men’s Committee will advise Ian at its next meeting on March 19th before it is presented to the Board for consideration. The Committee is very grateful for the strong response to the recent survey which has helped to shape the plan. Membership will be informed of the details as soon as the plan is finalised.
  3. The make-over of the Wilson Green is now starting to show positive signs with a better cover of grass. It’s running at about 11/12 and with more rolling and cutting this should improve over the next couple of weeks when it will be marked up ready for some trials.
  4. Most bowlers would now be aware that the Club General Manager Tony Dunn has resigned and will vacate the position in the next three weeks. After five years in the position, Tony feels that it is time to move on to new pastures. We of the men’s bowling membership wish him and his family well, and thank him for all that he has done for the club. His energy and foresight in keeping the club viable during Covid will long be remembered. Go well Tony, Kate and kids!

Social Bowls Wednesday

An overcast sky greeted the thirty-six bowlers as they ventured onto the green on Wednesday. Fortunately, the day remained dry and we even saw the sun for a period of time to cheer the heart. So, with the conditions very good and  little breeze to confuse the bowlers, it’s a puzzle that an orange bowl from rink nine snaked its way onto rink eight late in the afternoon . . . naughty bowl!! Apparently, another escapee bowl was sighted as well, this time a green one sliding from rink ten to nine! Ah such is the life of a bowl! Given the thirty-six bowlers, the Match Committee organised six games of triples.

On rink 8, Shane ‘(k)nee’ Harvey, Bruce ‘scratched’ Yahl and the maestro Robin Staples battled against Mark Shelvey, Terry ‘puff’ Norwood and Chris ‘Mr Ebullience’ Forrester. Chris’ team looked sharp from the start and led 4 – 1 after four ends. They then cracked a five shotter on the fifth, and by the eighth end led 15 – 1. Where were the oxygen puffers?! Robin’s team did move the score to 4 – 15, but by the fifteenth end it was 5 – 24 and they were on their knees. To their great credit, Robin’s team grabbed a five shotter of their own on the next end, but to little avail as Chris cracked the whip and his men responded well. The final score was 32 – 11 to Chris’ team, with Chris himself having a fine game and he reckons his second had a pretty fair game as well. Newbies Shane and Mark are shaping up very well also.

Chris is in fine form at present!

On rink 9, Graham ‘hardnut’ Hartnup, Richard ‘orange bowl’ Denman and the wily Owen Williams took on Mark ‘straw’ Barrow, Don ‘gentleman’ Chapman and Viv ‘second’ Gear. Both teams had solid wins early for the score to be 5 all after four ends . . . and then cyclone Trump struck in the form of a seven, yes SEVEN shotter to Owen’s trio!! Stunned, stung, wounded ah, but not out, Viv’s team won the next two ends and were back on track. Well, momentarily, because they dropped a four on the ninth and slipped behind the Williams juggernaut by 10. They dug deep to win four of the next five ends, but the wily Owen, hand firmly on the tiller, guided his trio safely home to an impressive 28 – 16 victory.

Old photo, Richard trialed orange bowls to great effect!

On the next rink, Joel ‘grr’ Hunt, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie tussled for honours against Bill ‘jockey’ Dodwell, Wal ‘speckles’ Markow and the miracle man Peter Morales. Despite dropping a double on the first end, Peter’s team grabbed a very welcome five shotter on the fourth to lead 8 – 2. Ends were then shared, but on the ninth, and then the eleventh cyclone Trump appeared again in the form of a six, then a SEVEN shotter to team Morales! Down 5 – 24, the team Rubie raft was in very choppy water and looking to capsize. Valiantly, Paul righted the craft, and his trio matched the runaway leaders in the chase home. No gain was made on the scorecard however, and team Morales drifted in 31 – 11 winners.

The miracle man did it again!

On rink 11, Jim Larkin, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and the venerable, evergreen Gordon Lewis faced off against Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees, Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt and Dave ‘pot black’ Charlesworth. In a bright opening, Dave’s team had the better placed shots and led 6 – 2 after five ends. They pushed this to 9 – 3 and then 10 – 5, until Gordon and his men cracked a five shotter on the tenth end to square the scorecard. Dave’s team then churned out solid ends until the Lewis machine took the initiative to lead 20 – 15 with three ends to play. Far from done and eager for the battle, Dave’s team leapt to the fore, got shots in the head to grab five shots over the next two ends and have the match all square with one to play. In a dramatic last end, the Charlesworth trio grabbed a double and the honours at 22 – 20.

Graham ‘leaning tower’ a study in concentration!

In yet another triples game on rink 12, Alex ‘wides’ Christlo, Ted ‘barry’ McPhee and junior John Cummins took on Barb ‘stretch’ Wainberg, John ‘lofty’ McGuire and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn. And in a lightning grab before the Cummins lot knew what was happening, Mick’s team had nicked the initiative and led 9 – 0 after five! With Mick barking out the advice, his team pushed the lead out to 12 – 3 after eight ends and then 15 – 5 after twelve. And then there must have been something in the smelling salts because a single to juniors team on the next end was followed by a five shotter and they were back in the hunt. Mick steadied his team to win the next four ends, but then cyclone Trump struck again in the form of a six shotter to team Cummins. At 17 – 20, Junior’s team was back in contention! In a very tight finish Mick’s team managed to restrict the leakage to singles and so held on to get home 20 – 19.

In the final game on rink 15, Barry ‘smerfel’ Werfel, Mike ‘left’ Hook and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze battled against Graham ‘dragon’ Denman, Arnold ‘dickie knee’ Lenczuk and Joe ‘skip’ O’Donnell. Despite dropping a single on the first end, Clive’s team started solidly to lead 7 – 1 after four ends. However, Joe’s trio hit back solidly on the next two ends to have the score all square. It was then 8 all after eight when, yes that cyclone Trump visited rink 15 in the form of a five shotter to Clive’s team. Stung into action, team O’Donnell then won the next five ends to lead by two shots at 15 – 13. The teams then traded heavy blows for Clive and his boys to lead by six with two ends to play. Joe’s team grabbed a three on the twentieth, but Clive got home by four with a single on the last; 25 – 21 in a great game.

Clive shows his winning style!
