BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY MARCH 6th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some bits of info to begin with:
- Pennants will continue at Bowral on Saturday March 9th. The Grade Three team will play host to Hazelbrook while the Grade Six bowlers will be involved in organised practice matches. Bowlers will need to keep in mind that the market will be on that day so parking will probably be at a premium.
- Due to the Pennants matches on the Waratah Green, there will be no organised social bowls on Saturday 9th. Bowlers are, however, able to use the Wilson Green if they wish to roll up or organise play amongst themselves.
- The BBC Singles Championship final was played last Sunday and Ash Lewis won his second title by defeating Mick Anderson 25 – 8. Congratulations Ash!
- The BBC Pairs Championship will commence at 9am on Sunday March 10th with the playing of the round of 16 in the morning and the quarter finals in the afternoon. There should be some fairly interesting bowls played for anyone interested in dropping into the Club for a look.
SOCIAL BOWLS MARCH 6th
Forty-two bowlers turned out for social bowls on Wednesday, the highest number we’ve had in a while. The women’s fours team were keen for a hit out prior to heading off to a Zone game and the men were happy to accommodate them. That made for a very interesting fours game. Given the numbers overall, the Match Committee organised one fours, one pairs and five triples matches. And it was great to see Richard Denman back on the green; good on you Richard.
On rink 7, Jill Harwood, Mike Hook and Charles Coode took on Grahame ‘pop’ Denman, Barry Werfel and Richard ‘denman’ Denman. Both sides scored early for the scores to be 3 all after six ends. However, from the eighth end, Richard’s team won six consecutive ends to lead 12 – 6. By the eighteenth end they were still leading well and, although Charles’ team had a couple of good ends, team Denman went on to win 19 – 13. It seems that the eye doctor did a good job for you Richard!
Great to have Richard back on the green . . . and a victory!
Rink 8 saw the the girls versus the boys fours with Rowena Coode, Reta South, Gail Fraser and Margaret Lawless battling it out against Arny ‘man in black’ Lenczuk, Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt, Stephen ‘nonbundy’ Day and the unflappable one Chris Forrester. Both sides got on the scorecard early but a four shotter to the men on the fourth end started a run of four ends for them to lead 9 – 2. They then continued to outpoint the opposition to lead 13 – 3 after eleven and the signs were ominous for the girls. However, Margaret’s team then hit better form winning six of the next seven ends to take the lead by a shot at 15 – 14 and have the men on the back foot. However, Chris then marshalled his forces and they took the last three ends and the match by 20 – 15.
The women enjoyed a hit-out against the men!
The 18-ender was a pairs match where Keith ‘foxy’ Edwards and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie took on John Fleming and John ‘junior’ Cummins. Keith and Paul dominated the opening taking the first five ends to lead 9 – 0. The two Johns were about to call for the defibrillator when they fluked an end, and then another . . . which became six ends, and they were back in the game at 7 – 9. Keith and Paul then scored a three but immediately hit the ‘horrors’ conceding ten shots and the lead on the next three ends. The game had been turned upside down as the Johns went on to win 17 – 14. Fancy betting on this game . . . ‘what could you be buying instead’!!
On rink 10, Joel ‘Grr’ Hunt, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn battled against Denis ‘noisy’ Lees, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee and the wily one Bob Edwards. Although both teams won early ends, Bob’s team had the better of the first half of the scoring to lead 9 – 3 after nine ends. Mick’s team then hit their straps winning the next four ends to get to within a shot of their opponents. Bob’s team rallied and managed to hold onto the lead although only by two shots with an end to play. Bob’s team then ground out a shot on the last to sneak home 17 – 14.
The ‘wily one’ got his team home again!
On the next rink Alex Christlo, Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone and gentleman Jim Starkey went head to head against Wal Markow, Paul McInerney and ‘dasher’ Clive Neutze. Both sides won early ends with the score being 3 – 2 in favour of team Starkey after four ends. Clive’s team then won four ends on the trot and, although they gave up three on the ninth, they led 12 – 6 after eleven ends. Although Jim’s team battled hard, Clive’s team managed to retain their lead throughout the second half of the game. They went on to a quite comfortable 21 – 13 victory.
Clive’s team got the better of their opponents!
On rink 12, Bill Meredith, Mike Holmewood, and the maestro himself Robin Staples took on Ian ‘smooth’ Duncan, Joe O’Donnell and the miracle man Peter Morales. Robin’s team had much the better of the opening ends to lead 9 – 1 after five. The miracle man’s team then won three ends but the single shots meant they were still well behind on the card. The two sides then traded ends, but a scorching five shotter on the twelfth end put Robin’s team in a commanding position. They then continued to outplay their opponents and, despite giving up a pair of threes on the last two ends, they went on to an impressive victory at 24 – 17.
Nonagenarian Bill keeps rolling them down!
In the final triples game on rink 13, Neville ‘the’ Tanner, Don ‘chippy’ Chapman and the venerable Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis took on Dave Charlesworth, Harold ‘stentless’ Wall and the wily Scot himself Owen Williams. Both teams found some form early in a tight start to the game that saw the scores locked at 3 all after six ends. Gordon’s team then edged to the lead but were soon matched and it was 6 all after ten ends. The scores then remained quite close through the second half of the match until a sizzling five shotter on the nineteenth gave Gordon’s team the initiative. Despite losing the last two ends, team Lewis held on to win 19 – 16 in a close one.
Sprightly Harold is rolling well after his stentless, non-episode!!
