BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY MAY 14th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some general bits to start with:
- A very successful Chris Benton charity day was held last Saturday with eight teams of four vying for the title and prizes. The team skipped by Al McGhee finished up with the honours being undefeated and plus 29 shots. In second position and also undefeated was the Chris Forrester team, and third with one loss was Robin Staples’ team. A more detailed report has been posted earlier for anyone wishing to follow up.
- The BB Club Open Triples Championship will commence on Saturday the 17th with the playing of round one. There will also be social bowls for those interested in a roll up.
- On Wednesday next, the 21st, bowlers from Picnic Point will be joining Bowral social bowlers. No doubt there will be a need to use the Wilson Green so hopefully this will work out okay.
Social Bowls Wednesday
Thirty-nine bowlers turned out for social bowls on what was a very pleasant Wednesday afternoon. The Match Committee organised six games of triples, one with swinger, and one game of pairs.
On rink 7, Jill ‘Hollywood’ Harwood, Owen ‘wily’ Williams and the maestro Robin Staples took on Mark ‘rowdy’ Rundle, Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt and Steve ‘makeover’ Day. Things were tight early for the score to be 3 all after five ends. Neither side could gain the advantage so it was still locked after eleven. Robin’s team broke the deadlock with a five on the fourteenth, and proceeded to grind out a solid victory at 20 – 14.
On the next green, Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman was swing bowler for Alex ‘wides’ Christlo and Richard Denman on the one hand and Wal ‘speckles’ Markow and Mick Flynn on the other. Richard’s team made hay early to lead 5 – 1 after five ends and pushed this out to 8 – 3 after ten. A four shotter on the fourteenth gave them a 12 – 8 lead, but then Mick’s team swooped. They won the next six ends to shut team Denman out of the game and toddled home 17 – 13.
On rink 9, Mark ‘straw’ Barrow, Viv ‘second’ Gear and the dasher Clive Neutze battled against Shane ‘newknee’ Harvey, Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie and John ‘junior’ Cummins. Clive’s team led 4 – 2 after four, but by the eighth end were behind 4 – 10! They got the score to 8 – 10, but junior’s team led 15 – 8 by the thirteenth. They still led by six shots with four ends to play, but then team Neutze struck! They won the last four ends collecting ten shots and a 23 – 19 win!
In another triples game, Denis ‘very rowdy’ Lees, Don ‘gentleman’ Chapman and ‘midshipman’ Peter Watson tussled against Clive ‘bell ringer’ Hutchens, Bruce ‘scratched’ Yahl and Joe ‘skip’ O’Donnell. Both sides opened brightly but a five shotter on the sixth gave Peter’s team the lead and a four on the ninth made it 12 – 6 in their favour. Joe’s team battled hard but anything they came up with was more than matched by team Watson which got home 22 – 14.
On rink 11, Peter ‘junior’ Martin, Peter ‘senior’ Marshall and the venerable cobbler Gordon Lewis faced off against Ian ‘Mr Cool’ Duncan, Graham ‘hardnut’ Hartnup and Arnie ‘dickie knee’ Lenczuk. Both teams took an early end but a five shotter on the third saw Gordon’s team leap into action. They roared out to 12 – 5 after nine, and then 16 – 6 after fourteen. And after a nine, yes folk a full house of nine shots on the seventeenth it was game over. It ended 34 – 11.
In the final triples game, Barry ‘smerfel’ Werfel, Brian ‘misère’ Bailey and Charles Coode took on Bill ‘jockey’ Dodwell, Graham ‘007’ Bond and Dave ‘pot black’ Charlesworth. Both sides scored early for things to be locked at 4 all after four ends. It was then that team Charlesworth started to dominate matters and pushed out to 14 – 5 after ten. With the wind clearly in their sails, Dave’s team coasted home to a comfortable 32 – 7 victory.
In the pairs game on rink 15, Joel ‘grr’ Hunt and Chris ‘ebullience’ Forrester confronted Neville ‘nifty’ Tanner and Bob ‘very wily’ Edwards. Both teams scored early for the scores to be locked at 5 all after five ends, and with neither side yielding, it was still equal on the twelfth. It was then Bob and Neville who broke the shackles winning six of the next seven ends and setting up a 22 – 14 lead. The ends were shared from there, but it was Neville and Bob’s day with a 26 – 17 victory.
