BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY MAY 1st (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some points of information to begin with:
- The Bowral Grade Three pennants team is still in the running to win their section of the competition with one round remaining. On Saturday, the boys will travel to St Mary’s to take on the locals. A win there to Bowral, and a loss to Campbelltown when they play Springwood would give Bowral the title. Bowl well fellows!
- The Grade Six pennants team is in 4th position, one point ahead of the last placed Bundanoon. In the final round on Saturday, Bowral will travel to Bundy for the winner takes all encounter (and leaving the loser holding the wooden spoon). Last time they met a few weeks ago, Bowral had a comfortable win on the synthetic at home, but will, however, find the heavy grass of Bundanoon a different proposition. Go get ’em Sixers!
- The Men’s Committee is still collecting feedback about the bowling condition of the Wilson Green. We have a fair amount already but are happy to receive any further information. Committee member Peter Flight is collating the info so it would be helpful if you could direct comments to him.
Social Bowls Wednesday
Thirty bowlers turned out for a trundle on a cool Wednesday afternoon. Fortunately, the original weather forecast was off the mark and we were able to get through the day without any real threat of rain. It might have helped though if the weather Gods had turned the temperature up by six or eight degrees! The Match Committee organised five games of triples, running three of these on the Wilson Green and the other two on the Waratah.
On rink 3 of the Wilson Green, Ian ‘cool’ Duncan, Paul McInerney and the venerable cobbler Gordon Lewis faced off against Russell Dunstan, Jim ‘gentleman’ Starkey and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze. Although they took a shot on the first end, Gordon’s team were left reeling and clutching for the handrail after dropping a whopping six shotter on the second. Through the first half Clive’s team then continued to be on top leading 16 – 8 after eleven ends. The cobbler then whipped his team into action and they moved to within two shots with five ends to play. Their run fizzled however, as Clive and his boys then scored singles on the last five ends to get home 23 – 16.
Clive and his team had a good day!
On the next rink, Dave Charlesworth, Arny ‘black feet’ Lenczuk and the Steven ‘suave’ Goddard took on Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees, Graham ‘jockey’ Hunt and Stephen ‘exbundy’ Day. In a rip-roaring start, team Goddard blasted their opposition to win the opening seven ends and lead 13 – 0. Where was the oxygen and the defib?! However, team Day then won the next two ends and their fear of a blank score-line evaporated. In fact, they matched the early high flyers through the second half of the game, although they didn’t really close the gap by much. The final score in favour of the Goddard team was 22 – 11. To the casual observer, Dave Charlesworth is proving to be a handy bowler to have in your side.
Stephen Goddard has picked up his form as though he’d never been cruising!
In the last of the games on the Wilson Green, Mike ‘fish’ Hook, Mark Rundle and the ebullient Bob Crowley battled against Barry Werfel, Terry ‘PNE’ Norwood and the irrepressible Chris Forrester. Both sides edged their way onto the card early for Chris’ team to lead slenderly 7 – 5 after five ends. It was then 8 all after seven ends but a scorching five shotter on the next end to Bob’s team had them well in front. They continued to get the better of their opponents and an eye-watering six shotter on the fifteenth end had their opposition on their knees. They then coasted on to a comfortable 28 – 17 win. For the victors, Mark was very steady and skipper Bob had a blinder. But for the vanquished, ouch . . . a five shotter as well as a six shotter!!
Bob was in great form wrecking the opposition team’s ends!
In the first of the 18-enders on the Waratah Green, Keith ‘fox’ Edwards, Bill Dodwell and Owen ‘wily’ Williams faced off against John Fleming, Bill ‘the’ Pope and Mr Ricochet Paul Rubie. In an impressive start, Owen’s team won the first five ends to lead 6 – 0 and have the opposition scratching their heads and wondering where their first shot was to come from. Team Williams then continued to pile on the pressure to lead 11 – 3 at the halfway point of nine ends. Far from done though, Paul got his team on song, and when they moved to within a shot at 11 – 12 after fourteen ends, they were starting to get a sniff of victory. Not so however, their run spluttered as Owen’s team dominated the closing ends to run out victors by 20 – 11.
Ninety-three years young Keith is still rolling them to the jack!
In the other match on the Waratah Green, Joel ‘Grr’ Hunt, Graham ‘hardnut’ Hartnup and the maestro Robin Staples took on Grahame Denman, Joe O’Donnell and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn. Both sides won early ends, but it was Robin’s team that had edged to the lead at 8 – 3 after five ends. They still led after seven ends, but an excellent run of four ends to Mick’s team then had his men in front 12 – 10 at the halfway stage. Robin’s team regained the lead after thirteen ends, but another short spurt had Mick’s team had back in front by two shots with two to play. It was one shot to Robin’s team on the next end, and then on the last end came the shot of the match; a shot behind and two shots down in the head, Robin played a resting toucher! A draw salvaged from the jaws of defeat by the maestro! Great bowling! A drawn game at 16 all.
Robin finished with a resting toucher to salvage a draw!
