Social Bowls Wednesday August 16th

Thirty-four eager bowlers turned out for social bowls on Wednesday and weren’t to be put off by what was a wintery afternoon. The Waratah Green was the venue with the surface fairly slick and the line quite wide. The men were pleased to again have Julie Hayden join them. Given the number of bowlers, five games of triples were organised along with one of pairs.

In the pairs game on rink 8, Barry Werfel and Richard Denman took on Denis Lees and Skipper Joe O’Donnell. And, much to the surprise of the Match Committee, this game turned out to be a very one-sided affair. Barry and Richard won the first five ends to lead 7 – 0 and this dominance continued throughout the game. By the tenth end they led 10 – 2, although Denis and Joe managed to get it back to 11 – 5 on the fourteenth. A run of five consecutive ends saw Barry and Richard push their lead out to 19 – 5. Overall, team Denman went on to win fifteen of the twenty-one ends and run out very convincing 20 – 7 winners. To the casual observer, Barry seemed to be in very good form getting his team in good position often.

Barry Werfel had a fine game as lead!

In the usual 18-ender, newcomer Shane Harvey, Bill ‘the’ Pope and the youngster himself John Cummins battled things out against John Fleming, Keith Edwards and skipper ‘the rowdy one’ Paul Rubie. This was another tight eighteen ends of bowling with the difference early on being an eye-watering six shots on the sixth end. This gave team Cummins a lead of 10 – 5 and they were feeling very good about proceedings. Shane, Bill and John then continued to lead and looked comfortable until Paul and his boys opened up the game with six shots of their own on the sixteenth end. And then Paul’s team piled on the pressure to be holding six on the next end, only to see skip Cummins come to the rescue with one on the jack! He and his team then scored four on the last end to put the game to bed. The final score was 21 – 14 to team Cummins.

As skip, John put one on the jack to turn minus six into plus one!

In a triples game on rink 10, Brian Bailey, Chris Forrester and skipper ‘Mr Coach’ Robin Staples went up against Ian Duncan, Julie Hayden and the ‘suntanned’ Stephen Goddard. Although Robin and his team won the first three ends to lead 4 – 0, they were soon under pressure from team Goddard. With Julie Hayden a standout, Stephen’s team  won five of the next six ends to set up  an impressive lead of 13 – 5. Robin then steadied the ship (or the 747) to some extent as his team clawed their way back to 9 – 13 by the twelfth end. That was as close as they came however, as Steven’s team then dominated the second half of the game. They won seven of the last nine ends to run home very comfortable winners at 24 – 14. As well as Julie having a great game, Brian and Ian had a very good battle as leads with not much between them.

Julie was a standout in her game!

On the next rink, Mike Hook, Ian Crow, and the wily Stoke man Mick Flynn took on Walter Markow, Joel Hunt and skipper, life member and ‘living legend’ Gordon Lewis. Mick’s team took the first couple of ends but were soon being put to the test by team Lewis as they were down 9 -3 after five ends. These two committed sides then took ends alternatively through the first half of the match for Gordon’s team to be leading 13 – 9. With plenty of chat and some excellent leading by Mike Hook, Mick’s team kept themselves in the game. Neither team dominated, but team Lewis scored more heavily when they won an end with the result that they edged away from their opponents. When the fat lady sang, the score in favour of Gordon’s team was 23 – 15.

In another triples match, Neville Tanner, Terry Norwood and skipper that wily leftie Clive Neutze went head to head against Graham ‘red hot’ Hunt, Owen Williams and skipper Stephen ‘Bundy’ Day. In an astonishing, eye-watering, blistering opening Steve’s team scored six on the first end, and when they added three on the next, they had their opponents on their knees. And, like rubbing salt into open wounds, team Day scored another five on the fourth end to lead by 14 – 1!! There were some mutterings about applying the mercy rule and calling the ambulance but faces changed a little when Clive’s team scored five shots of their own on the seventh. Even so, Steve’s team held a monstrous lead of 25 – 9 after thirteen ends … however, the winds changed at that point. Clive’s team won the next four ends scoring 12 huge shots and closing the gap to four. Game on! By the twentieth end there were three shots in it and anyone’s game. Team Day steadied however, taking the last end and victory at 30 – 25.

Clive Neutze and Steve Day had a real tussle as skips!

The final game was a triples match in which Bill Meredith, Russell Dunstan and skipper Tony ‘sparks’ Oakes battle it out against Graham Hartnup, Arnold Lenczuk and skipper Peter ‘miraculous’ Morales. And this game, like the one on the adjacent rink opened with a six shot haul, this going to team Oakes. From that point, the game proceeded fairly evenly for Tony’s team to lead 9 – 3 at the seventh end. Peter’s team then won three of the next four ends to close the gap to 9 – 11. With plenty of chat, team Oakes then grabbed the initiative and pushed their lead out to 18 – 9. And then came the end to fire up the match … Peter’s team scored a sizzling 7, yes folks, 7 shots on the sixteenth end! And when they scored another shot on the next, they were only one behind at 17 – 18! How quickly games can change! However, to their credit Tony’s boys steadied to score four on the next end and when they followed up with three on the twentieth end, they were home. The final score in favour of team Oakes was 25 – 20.

Peter led his team to 7 shots on the 16th end!
