BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 26th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some gristle to chew on for a start:
- The second week of round two of the ‘Spirit of Bowral Bowling – The FOSS Award’ was held today, so more on that below.
- The semi-finals of the Minor Singles competition will be held on Saturday the 29th. Chris Forrester will take on Paul McInerney while Ted McPhee will do battle with Terry Norwood. The markers for these two matches will be Graham Hunt and Denis Lees. The final will then be played on Wednesday December 3rd.
- The draw for the Major Fours Championship has now been posted on the notice board with the first round to be played on Saturday December 6th.
- The first round of the Southern Highlands Cup will be staged at Bowral on Sunday November 30th. Participating will be the best of Robertson, Bundanoon and Bowral, so there should be some fine bowling for anyone interested in relaxing, sipping on a toddy and taking in the battles.
- The November meeting of the executive of the Men’s Bowling Committee was held at 10am yesterday, so the draft minutes from that meeting will be posted asap.
- The schedule for the Consistency Singles Competition is beginning to fill which is excellent. There is no limit on the number of entries, so if your name is not yet entered you still have time to get your name on the list for this event which kicks off on January 3rd.
- By now, bowling members of the Club should have received an email from Committee member Ian Duncan asking to let him know by December 3rd if you will be attending the Xmas/Awards day on Saturday December 13th. We need fairly accurate numbers for catering purposes, so please reply to Ian asap.
Wednesday Social Bowls – The FOSS Awards
Wednesday saw the staging of the second week of this competition with randomly drawn teams taking to the Waratah Green. Because of the numbers, the Match Committee organised five games of triples (one with swing bowler) and one of pairs.
In a triples game on rink 8, Wal Markow, Ian Duncan and Viv ‘top’ Gear battled against Shane Harvey, Paul Rubie and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze, and Viv’s team got off to a flyer leading 12 – 0 after five ends! However, Clive’s team then hit their straps to win the next five and close the gap to one shot. At that point, the game settled into a real battle so that by the twentieth, it was all square at 20 all! And it was Clive’s trio that grabbed the winning shot on the last and took home the bacon! So, 2 competition points went to Shane, Paul and Clive along with 21 shots, while 20 shots went to each of the opposition bowlers.
On the next rink, Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman was swing bowler for Graham Hartnup and Robin ‘maestro’ Staples on one side and Richard Denman and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn on the other, and Mick’s team had the better of the start winning the first four ends. However, Robin’s team then got cracking and by the eleventh had hit the lead by a shot. They then pushed on to a six shot lead only to be reeled in for 17 all with three ends to play. In some tight final ends, team Staples held firm, grabbed singles and secured 2 competition points each.
In another triples game, Barry Werfel, Paul McInerney and Bob ‘wily’ Edwards tussled for honours against Ted ‘Barry’ McPhee, Mark Rundle and Steve Day, and scores were locked at 4 all after six ends. With a four shotter on the eighth, Bob’s trio took a handy five shot lead, but, by the twelfth end, it was all square again. With little between the teams, it was then 15 all with two ends to play! Game on! It was Bob’s team that took the honours grabbing a pair of doubles and hitting the Club as winners. So, 2 competition points went to Bob, Paul and Barry.
On rink 11, Mark Barrow, Graham ‘NZ’ Hunt and the cobbler Gordon Lewis went head to head against Peter Marshall, Owen Williams and Ross ‘trim’ Barber, and it was Ross’ team that opened the better to lead 5 – 1 after five ends. However, Gordon urged his team on and by the twelfth end they had squared the match at 9 all. With Mark leading well, Gordon’s team then continued to edge their opponents, so that they led by a shot with two to play. And then an oopser came when a team Lewis bowler nicked the jack to the opposition when holding three! And then a double on the final end to team Barber rubbed salt into the wound! 18 – 16 to team Barber, and they each notched up 2 competition points!
In the pairs game, the ‘terrible’ Terrys, Salter and Norwood faced up to Neville Tanner and Chris ‘ebullience’ Forrester, and, with Neville smothering the jack, he and Chris had much the better of the early ends to lead 10 – 4. However, a trailed jack for six shots gave the Terrys the lead on the tenth and they were into stride. T Salter started to get the better of the lead battle against Neville, and the T’s managed to keep their noses in front. And when they notched up a four on the nineteenth and followed with a double, they were home and hosed. So, 2 points went to each of the Terrys.
In the final game, Rick ‘lolly-pop’ Reynolds (great to see you back on the green Rick), Denis Lees and Junior Cummins battled against Barb Wainberg, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and Joe O’Donnell, and, although they dropped six shots on the first three ends, Joe’s team grabbed the next three ends to lead 8 – 6! Joe’s trio then consolidated with a four shotter and settled into a leading position with team Cummins struggling to stay with them. The lead of four became five, then six and then by the final end eight at 21 – 13. So, 2 competition points went to each of Barb, Peter and Joe.
So, when the competition points were tallied after week two matches, there are four bowlers, Barb Wainberg, Barry Werfel, Robin Staples and Terry Norwood on 5 points along with a host of bowlers on 4 points. With two more weeks to play, there are enough points available for the leaders to be caught. Go for it . . . bowl for it!!
