BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 27th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some gristle to chew on for a start:
- A last call for nominations of bowlers to be considered for the Southern Highlands Cup team to represent Bowral against Robertson and Bundanoon on December 7th, 8th and 14th. Nominations will close at 5pm Saturday November 30th so time is short to get those names on the notice board.
- And another reminder to bowlers interested in representing BBC in the 24/25 Pennants competitions in Feb/March/April 2025, that the schedule for nomination is on the notice board and you have until December 6th to get your name listed.
- The Major Pairs Championship continues on the weekend with the staging of the semi-finals on Saturday commencing at 12.30. Ash Lewis and Mick Spong will do battle against Dugald Braithwaite and Al McGhee on rink 8 and Stephen Della and Dave Coltman will take on Ted McPhee and Chris Forrester on rink 10. All being well with the weather, the final will be played at 10.30 on Sunday. Bowl well fellows!!
- The latest meeting of the Men’s Bowling Committee executive was held on Wednesday November 27th and the draft minutes will be posted on the notice board soon, hopefully on Saturday.
- One decision to come from the Committee meeting is that there will be a trial of Twilight Bowls on Friday afternoons. Starting at 5pm and over fifteen ends the game will come at a cost of $5 green fee for Bowling Club members. All being well, the first game will be staged on December 13th.
- The Major Fours Championship will be staged in January and the schedule is now on the notice board awaiting nominations. Bowlers have until December 7th 5pm to get names listed so it’s time to get talking.
Social Bowls Wednesday
Thirty bowlers turned out for a roll on a muggy afternoon with a fluky, irritating breeze fluttering the weather-sock. Amongst the number was newcomer Barbara Wainberg, and relative newcomer Mark Barrow having his third game at Bowral. The Match Committee organised three games of triples and three of pairs.
In a triples match on rink 7, Alex Christlo, Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt and Dave ‘pot black’ Charlesworth battled against Shane Harvey, Owen ‘wily scot’ Williams and Terry Norwood. Despite dropping three shots on the first end, Dave’s team jumped their opponents and led 7 – 3 after five ends. However, team Norwood steadied, got bowls in the head and won five of the next six ends to be only a shot down. The back half of the game was shared at five ends apiece, but it was team Norwood that outpointed their opponents and came home victors 21 – 19. All bowlers had their moments, and in particular, Shane and Alex had a good tussle as leads.
In a pairs game on the next rink, Barbara Wainberg and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn took on Jill Harwood and Viv ‘top’ Gear. With Mick in fine coaching form and Barbara showing excellent promise, the pair smashed their opponents on the first five ends to lead 9 – 0. However, Jill and Viv finally found a way through to the jack, and when they won five of the next seven ends, they were only three down at 9 – 12. And from there, they definitely gained the upper hand. In a withering burst, they won six of the final nine ends to run out worthy winners at 23 – 16. Perseverance!!
Viv got the job done late in the game!
In the 18-ender on rink 9, John Fleming and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie tussled against Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman and Harold ‘stentless’ Wall. Grahame and Harold had the better of the first few ends, but by the sixth were down 7 – 4. With Paul in good touch, he and John kept up the pressure and at the halfway point led 10 – 5. Far from done, Harold and Grahame hit back in the second half, and when they cracked a four shotter on the fifteenth end, they led 15 – 13. However, in a close finish, Paul and John regained the lead and held on to sneak home 17 – 16. Good one!
Paul’s team sneaked home in a tight one!
In a triples match, Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees, Paul McInerney and Gordon ‘cobblers’ Lewis faced off against Wal Markow, Arnie ‘rosie’ Lenczuk and the wily Bob Edwards. Bob’s team got away to a flier winning four of the first five ends, including an eye-watering five shotter on the first, and led 12 – 1! Ouch! Stung into action, Gordon’s team then won five of the next six ends, but being restricted to singles, still trailed 7 – 15. And after fifteen ends they trailed 9 – 21 — but never write off a Gordon Lewis team! With the skipper cracking the whip, team Lewis won five of the last six ends, but, however found the deficit was too great. Bob and his boys held on to come out winners at 23 – 18.
More than style alone, Bob Edwards esq got his team home!
On rink 11, Ian ‘cool’ Duncan, Don ‘gentleman’ Chapman and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze battled against Joel ‘grr’ Hunt, Ted ‘Barry’ McPhee and the phlegmatic Chris Forrester. This was one of those matches which showed that a team had to score more than singles to come out on top. Clive’s team won eleven ends but finished with a total of 12 shots for the match, whereas Chris’ boys notched up a five, a four and a couple of threes along the way to amassing a very tidy 23 shots. Chris’ team led all day with Joel and Ted in really good form and Chris making his presence felt in his usual way. Special mention must be made of Clive’s weighted shot which reduced a potential eight shots to one. However, bragging rights went to Chris’ mob!
Chris, the phlegmatic one, rolls one down while the ‘dasher’ looks on!
In the final match, a pairs game on rink 12, Mark Barrow and Steven ‘suave’ Goddard took on Jim Larkin and Robin ‘maestro’ Staples. Although they dropped a shot on the first end, Robin and Jim led 9 – 1 after seven ends and had the opposition wondering where their next score would come from! Well, it came immediately as Mark and Steven won the next four ends and surged to the lead. And then the game tightened right up . . . it was 13 all after fourteen ends, 15 all after eighteen and 17 all with one to play. And in a real nail-biter, Steven and Mark grabbed a shot on the last to bring home the bacon. 18 – 17 in a beauty!!
