BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 1st

BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 1st         (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some bits and bobs to chew on for a start:

  1. The BBC Ltd AGM will be held on Sunday October 12th and hopefully bowlers will be there in strength. Voting for vacant positions on the Board will take place prior to the meeting with voting times listed on the notice board. Your Vice-President Peter Flight is a candidate as is Rowena Coode from the Women’s Club, so it would be great to see as many as possible casting a vote.
  2. The Major Pairs Championship was decided on Sunday September 28th when Al McGhee and Ash Lewis took on Dugald Braithwaite and Oscar Whalin. Congratulations to Dugald and Oscar who came out on top at 17 – 12 in a tight, drawn out match. For a more detailed account, go to the special report.
  3. The Major Singles Championship will be conducted in October and the nomination schedule is posted on the notice board awaiting your name. Nominations close at 5pm on Saturday October 4th when the draw will be made. There will be a few pairs of eyes keenly looking out for that!
  4. The ‘FOSS 25’ Wednesday competition for social bowlers sponsored by the evergreen Gordon Lewis continued on October 1st with the second round of games. More on that below.
  5. The September meeting of the executive of the Men’s Bowls Club was held on Wednesday 24th and the draft minutes will be posted on the notice board asap.
  6. And, good morning (or afternoon!) to Glenn G, former Vice-President at Bowral and now resident of Coffs Harbour who keeps in touch with what we are doing here in Bowral! We hope you and your lovely wife are in good health and enjoying the sunshine!

Wednesday Social Bowls  –  The Spirit of Bowral FOSS Competition

Just to remind you, the Spirit of Bowral competition is an event for Wednesday social bowlers sponsored by Gordon Lewis. Run over four weeks, it comprises triples matches (or some pairs depending on numbers) where the members of winning teams each receive two points (one for a draw). Bowlers who achieve a win by more than fifteen shots are awarded an additional point.  A tally of the shots scored by teams is also kept and will be used at the end to separate bowlers who have notched up equal numbers of points. After the first round, the leaders were Don Chapman, Joel Hunt and Robin Staples because they managed a bonus point win and so sat on three points.

So, to round two . . .

In the match on rink 7, Barb Wainberg, Don Chapman and Joe ‘rusty nail’ O’Donnell battled against Shane Harvey, Ian ‘Mr Cool’ Duncan and Arnie Lenczuk, and it was Joe’s team that came from behind to take the honours at 21 – 17. Arnie’s team led 15 – 10 at the sixteenth end, but team O’Donnell notched up an enormous eleven shots very quickly to shut the opposition out. So, 2 points go to each of Barb, Don and Joe along with 21 shots, while Arnie, Shane and Ian receive zero points but collect 17 shots each.

In a pairs game on rink 8, Charles ‘morse’ Coode and Mick Flynn took on Mark ‘rowdy’ Rundle and Chris Forrester, and Mick and Charles got off to a flyer to lead 11 – 3 after eight. Then, when they clocked up a four and a five they led 21 – 6 and looked to be coasting. Chris and Mark bowled much better in the run home but found that they had been too far behind. Two points go to each of Charles and Mick along with their shots, while Chris and Mark get shots only.

On the next rink, Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Graham Hunt and Gordon Lewis tussled against Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Peter ‘cancelled’ Flight and Richard Denman and both sides had success early for Gordon’s team to lead 9 – 7 after ten ends. However, a SIX shotter on the fifteenth end put Gordon’s trio in the box seat and they proceeded to stroll home to 23 – 11. Two points go to each of Gordon, Graham and Joel along with 23 shots, while each of team Denman receive shots only. And the mail is that Joel had another blinder!!

On rink 10, Mark Barrow, Denis ‘very rowdy’ Lees and Al McGhee faced off against Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone, Paul Rubie and Robin Staples. Both teams won early ends for the score to be 4 all after seven, but with Col right on the jack, Robin’s team then monstered the opposition over ends nine to fifteen to lead 26 – 5 and have the opposition on their knees. The final score was 30 – 12, so a bonus point situation meant that Robin, Col, and Paul each grab three points as well as 30 shots.

In another triples match, Terry ‘pep’ Salter, Graham Hartnup and ‘Junior’ Cummins challenged Barry Werfel, Paul McInerney and Owen ‘wily’ Williams and things were very tight early until the game exploded with an EIGHT shotter to Junior’s team that put them up 16 – 3. They also grabbed a six as they continued to dominate proceedings and run out huge winners at 28 – 10. With another bonus situation, each of Terry, Graham and Junior notch up three points as well as their shots.

On rink 12, Wal Markow, Mike ‘grappling’ Hook and Dave Charlesworth wrestled for honours against Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Rowena Coode and Terry Norwood. Ends were very tight until Dave’s team grabbed a three on the tenth end to lead 9 – 5. However, Rowena struck good form, and team Norwood ran together five ends to take a lead they managed to hold onto through to the 21st. The final score of 18 – 15 meant each of Grahame, Rowena and Terry collect two points and 18 shots.

In the final game, a pairs match on rink 15, Peter ‘senior’ Marshall and Bob Edwards took on Alex Christlo and Viv ‘second’ Gear and scores were even until a five shotter on the fifth gave Viv and Alex a lead of 8 – 4. And this was a lead that they were never to surrender. Bob and Peter did get to within four shots on the eighteenth, but Viv and Alex rounded out the win at 25 – 18. So, two points go to each of Alex and Viv along with their shots.

Therefore, after two rounds of the ‘Spirit of Bowral’ competition, we have some bowlers yet to notch up a win, fifteen bowlers on two points, four bowlers on three points and four on four points. On five points and 54 shots is Paul Rubie which puts him currently in second position with Joel Hunt ( five points and 51 shots) in third and Don Chapman (five points and 49 shots) in fourth. Our leader after two rounds is Robin Staples on six points and 58 shots! However, don’t despair bowlers because plenty of changes are possible over the next two weeks!
