BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 25th

BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 25th     (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some general info to begin with:

  1. Thanks to all the bowlers who are helping out by using the black garbage bins for their rubbish rather than the blue plastic rink markers. It’s easing the workload of the Match Committee members so let’s keep that going.
  2. The Men’s Bowling Committee held its October meeting at 4.30 on the 25th. Minutes of that meeting will be available soon so keep an eye out for those.
  3. The Mixed Pairs Competition will continue with the playing of round 2 matches on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Some re-scheduling of times has been necessary because of Zone 5 commitments.
  4. These web-site postings will continue to be printed off and posted on the Men’s notice board for those who like to look at the printed copy.

Social Bowls Wednesday October 25th

Thirty-five bowlers turned out for social bowls on what was a pleasant afternoon weather-wise. There was, however, a fairly unpredictable, gusty NW/SW breeze that gave all bowlers something to think about, and perhaps an excuse or two for those wayward bowls! Given the number of bowlers, six games of triples were organised by the Match Committee, with one game having a swing bowler; not ideal but inevitable if there is an odd number of bowlers.

In the match with the swinger, Grahame Denman bowled for both teams of Bill Pope and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie and John Fleming and skipper Don Chapman. The teams shared the first two ends, but a whopping seven shots on the third end rocketed team Rubie to a handsome lead. A five shot haul a few ends later, followed by a four had them in front at 17 – 6 after eight ends. However, skipper Don then found better touch and led his team in a fightback in the second half of the game. They slowly pegged the opposition back but fell just short; victory to Paul’s team by 20 – 18.

Rink 9 saw Joel (Grrr) Hunt, Graham ‘grouper’ Hunt and Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis taking on Ken Looke, Terry Norwood and Steven ‘unruffled’ Goddard. This game turned out to be a massacre!! Although they lost the first two ends, Gordon’s team then won eleven of the next twelve ends to absolutely smother their opponents! At 26 – 4, they had team Goddard on their knees and not even a defibrillator would have helped. With Joel having a blinder of  a game, Gordon a blinder and Graham obliterating his opposing player, they smashed the opposition. The final score was 30 – 9! Ouch, ouch, ouch!!!

On rink 10, Mike Hook, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and Bob ‘windsock’ Crowley took on Barry Werfel, Ian ‘Cros’ Crow and Steve ‘bundy’ Day. Both sides got onto the scorecard early for the match to be tight at 4 – 3 to team Day after five ends. With plenty of chat from the skippers, the score progressed to 7 all after ten ends. It was then that Bob’s team started to dominate the match. They won nine of the remaining eleven ends and ran out convincing winners at 24 – 10. There was some fine bowling from both sides with some very tight ends, but team Crowley always managed to have at least one bowl in close.

In the game on rink 11, Brian ‘misère’ Bailey, Joe O’Donnell and ‘gentleman’ Jim Starkey battled against Wal Markow, Denis Lees and Tony ‘sparkles’ Oakes. Jim’s team had the better of the opening to lead 6 – 2 after five ends. However, a four shot haul on the tenth end saw Tony’s team draw level at 8 all. Tony’s team then took the lead for the first time on the twelfth, but a four on the next end saw them slip behind 10 – 13. Team Starkey surged to an eight shot lead with four ends to play and looked comfortable. A brief flurry of shots to team Oakes saw them get a little closer, but the final score was 20 – 15 to Jim’s team.

In the match on rink 12, Phil Payne, Neville Tanner and skipper Arny ‘black feet’ Lenczuk took on Graham ‘bananas’ Hartnup. Keith Scriven and the wily Scot himself Owen Williams. Both teams won ends early for the score to be 4 all after six ends. With Arny barking out clear advice, his team grabbed three shots on the next end, but, by the tenth end the scores were still even at 9 all.  And although the scores were still level after sixteen ends, by the eighteenth Team Lenczuk had edged to the front at 18 – 16. Game on! It was then that Owen marshalled his forces well and they shut out the opposition taking the last three ends and victory at 20 – 19. What a great finish!

On the outside rink 13, Ian Duncan, Bill Meredith and the miracle man himself Peter Morales took on Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Paul McInerney and Bob ‘wily leftie’ Edwards. In a crushing opening to this match Peter’s team won the first four ends to lead 7 – 0! Always calm, skipper Bob, urged his team on so that by the sixth end they had reduced the deficit to four shots, and by the thirteenth end to one at 10 – 11. Peter’s team then edged further ahead so that, with two ends to play, they led by three shots. Far from done, Bob’s team took a shot on the twentieth end, and then in a high pressured finish, they grabbed three and victory on the last. It was 17 – 16 to team Edwards who’d trailed all day!
