BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 8th

BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 8th         (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some bits and bobs to chew on for a start:

  1. The AGM of BBC Ltd will be held at the Club on Sunday October 12th commencing at 9.30. Hopefully, we will see a good number of members in attendance.
  2. Voting for the vacant position on the Board of the Club is still open with the times for voting listed on the notice board. Peter Flight and Rowena Coode are the two nominees for the position, so, come on bowlers have your say.
  3. The third round of the the Gordon Lewis sponsored ‘Spirit of Bowral’ Wednesday competition continued on the 8th, so more on that below.
  4. The draw for the Major Singles Championship event has now been completed and posted on the notice board. The first game of this prestigious competition was brought forward to the 8th, so more on that below.
  5. And good evening to Glenn G who lives in Port Macquarie rather than Coffs Harbour! My apologies for the blunder which ‘leaning tower’ Graham was delighted to point out to me.

Major Singles Championship

By arrangement, one of the first round matches in the competition, Al McGhee versus Mick Flynn, was brought forward and played on rink 4 of the Wilson Green on Wednesday. The bowlers had wonderful sunshine on their backs, but a solid, blustery breeze made life very trying most of the time. Al McGhee was on the money early to lead 5 – 3 after five ends, but Mick then ran seven ends together to have Al under the pump at 12 – 5. However, it was then Al who dominated proceedings winning ten of the next eleven ends to be just four short of the magic twenty-five shots at 21 – 14. Mick then dug deeply into his resolve and edged back into contention. After the thirtieth end, Al’s lead had been cut to 23 – 20, and it was anyone’s game. However, when Al took out Mick’s shot on the next end, he made two and rounded out the win. So, Al moves on to the quarter finals on Saturday week, and no doubt will be hoping for the wind to have blown itself out!

Wednesday Social Bowls – The Spirit of Bowral FOSS Competition

Wednesday saw round three, the second last round of this mid-week competition staged with thirty-four bowlers eager to get on with matters. At the start of play, the leader of the competition was Robin Staples, but he had a number of bowlers breathing down his neck very keen to leap frog him in round three. Keep in mind that each of the members of the winning teams earns two points, with a bonus point being awarded to members of any team that notches up a win by more than fifteen shots. A shot tally is kept for each bowler as well, so that in the event of any tied point totals in the end, bowlers will be separated by the shots. So, to round three matches . . .

On rink 8, Barry Werfel, Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees and Chris Forrester took on Charles ‘morse’ Coode, Graham Hartnup and Bob Edwards, and it was Bob’s team that had the initiative early to lead 6 – 3 after five ends. They pushed this out to 13 – 7 by the eleventh and looked the goods. However, Chris’ team then took over and dominated the run home dropping only one shot through the back half. They blitzed team Edwards and finished 31 – 14 victors. Wow! So bonus points applied in this match, 3 points to each of Barry, Denis and Chris along with the shots. Shots only go to the opposition.

On rink 9, Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone, Rowena Coode and Robin Staples battled against Terry ‘pep’ Salter, Paul Rubie and Viv ‘top’ Gear. Viv’s team won the first couple of ends but a juicy five shotter to Robin’s team on the fourth got them up and running. However, Viv’s team dug and by the halfway point held a shot lead. It was then that Robin’s team won six ends on the trot to hit the lead and looked solid. However, team Gear then grabbed some vital shots so that with one ends to play, it was all even. Pressure!! In a tight last end, team Staples prevailed and sneaked home 22 – 21. So, 2 points to each of Robin, Rowena and Col along with their shots, and shots only to the opposition.

On the next rink, Graham ‘James’ Bond, Mike Hook and Joe ‘rusty nail’ O’Donnell tussled against Peter Marshall, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and Dave Charlesworth, and Dave’s team hit the tarmac with determination to lead 15 – 5 after eleven. Joe’s team moved the score to 10 – 15, but Dave’s trio really had their measure most of the back half of the match. They proceeded to a very sound victory not feeling the hot breath of challenge as they coasted home 24 – 14. So, 2 competition points to each of Dave, Neville and Peter along with their shots, and shots only to Joe, Graham and Mike.

On rink 11, Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Peter Martin and Junior Cummins battled for honours against Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow, Ian Duncan and the wily Owen Williams and it was Owen’s team that had the better of the first half of the match leading 18 – 6 after eleven ends. The game was then flipped on its head with Junior’s team monstering the opposition and roaring to a huge lead. Team Williams grabbed a late four shotter, but the damage had been done and the Cummins trio skated home 31 – 23. Two points to each of Junior, Peter and Joel along with the shots; again the mail is that Joel had yet another blinder; that man can’t be stopped at the moment!

In the next game, Mark Rundle, Don ‘gentleman’ Chapman and Peter Morales faced off against Alex Christlo, Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt and Richard Denman, and Richard’s team dominated the opening until they conceded a massive SIX shotter on the sixth end and slipped behind 7 – 8. Peter’s team then notched up a five shotter on the ninth, but by the fifteenth end, Richard’s team had edged in front 16 – 15. Team Morales again took the lead and managed to hold on this time to win 21 – 19. Maybe it was the distraction of the wind, but a few snaky, wrong bias shots found their way into this encounter, mostly orange in colour!! Two points go to each of Peter, Don and Mark.

In the final match, a pairs encounter on rink 15, Barb Wainberg and Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis took on Wal Markow and Arnie ‘dickie knee’ Lenczuk, and what a tight game this turned into! Singles would be the order of the day as these two teams ground away at each other, end after end. Gordon and Barb led 5 – 4 after eight ends, and 8 – 7 after thirteen! They were still in front 12 – 10 after sixteen, but singles to them on the next four saw them secure with one end to play. The final score of 16 – 13 gave Barb and Gordon 2 competition points each, plus their shots, while Wal and Arnie collected shots only.

And so, who’s leading the FOSS competition with just one week remaining? Well, Don Chapman and the supreme lead bowler Joel Hunt are on 7 points and John Cummins, Chris Forrester, Denis Lees, Col Stone and Paul Rubie are on 5 points, while Alex Christlo, Mick Flynn, Graham Hunt, Gordon Lewis, Joe O’Donnell, Rowena Coode and Barb Wainberg are on 4 points and capable of figuring in the places. These bowlers are all breathing down the neck of our leader Robin Staples on 8 points! So, it’s all down to the team draws next week and how things play out on the green! Turn up and bowl well!
