Social Bowls Wednesday September 11th

The Wednesday weather was very close to perfect for bowls, with pleasant warmth and only a light breeze coming out of the north-west to south-west. The conditions certainly gave the bowlers no excuses for any wayward bowls, especially those ones that sneaked into the next rink! Thirty bowlers turned out, so the Match Committee organised five matches of triples.

On rink 8, Alex Christlo, Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt and the ebullient Bob Crowley battled against Wal Markow, Paul McInerney and Bob ‘wily’ Edwards. Both teams won early ends so that the scores were locked at 5 all after seven ends. The Crowley team then strung together some winning ends so that by the thirteenth end they had a three shot lead at 10 – 7. And then came the end that seemed to shift the momentum – team Edwards notched up a four shotter on the fourteenth and hit the lead. They then kept their noses in front, and when they grabbed another four shotter on the nineteenth end, they led by six shots with two ends to play. The last two ends were shared singles, so the Edwards team went to the Bar happy winners at 19 – 13.

All style, the ‘wily’ one had a very solid game!

In the 18-ender on rink 9, Col ‘bunnings’ Stone, John Fleming and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie took on Barry ‘smerfel’ Werfel, Don ‘gentleman’ Chapman and John ‘junior’ Cummins. And, totally unexpectedly, this game sent off the emergency bells! The call went out and the manager was asked where he kept the defibrillator because it looked as though one of these sides might need to be zapped! Gasping for breath, junior’s team lost end … after end … after end! Fifteen in all! Wow! Put another way, team Rubie, with Mr Bunnings on fire, smashed the opposition end after end. And, to rub salt into the wounds, team Rubie notched up two six shotters and a four along the way. What a game! Little wonder that skipper Paul had a smile like a split watermelon after the game! Sorry, can’t print the score, but can say that it meant that the jackpot was fairly certain not to go off!

Skipper Paul took no prisoners in today’s game!

In the game on rink 10, Jim Larkin, Viv Gear (good to see you back Viv) and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze (looking very dapper after cruising around OZ) faced off against Grahame ‘pop’ Denman, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and skipper Mick ‘potters’ Flynn. In a whirlwind opening, Mick’s team blitzed the opposition with a mind-numbing six shotter on the first! How crippling is that! They followed up with the next two ends so that they suddenly had a 9 – 0 lead. Where was the oxygen was the call! Well, something happened because Clive did get his team on the card and by the ninth end had reduced the lead to seven shots. Showing little mercy, Mick’s team then pushed the lead out to 19 – 5 and it looked like another huge blow-out was looming. However, to their credit Clive and his men got their heads down and won five of the last seven ends to close the gap to ten shots. 22 – 12 was the final score.

Grahame led well for the victors!

On rink 11, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Russell Dunstan and Chris ‘unflappable’ Forrester battled for honours against Charles Coode, Richard ‘denman’ Denman and skipper Terry Norwood. And so, with bragging rights at stake, this game was very tight at the start with both sides edging their way onto the scorecard.  So tight it was that singles only were scored on the first six ends. At that point the score was 4 – 2 to team Norwood but then the first double put Chris’ team up 5 – 4 after eight ends. A little run of three ends saw team Norwood lead 8 – 5, but four ends later they were behind 8 – 12 and feeling the pressure. It was then that the game turned; a four shotter to Terry’s team on the seventeenth end had them on their way and they strung together a run  of five ends to finally get the upper hand. The final score was 18 – 13 to team Norwood, but the game seemed a lot tighter than that. Ted led well for his team and Richard had some very fine ends when the pressure was on towards the end.

Ted led well and Richard bowled well under pressure!

In the final game, newcomer Bruce Yahl was introduced to social bowls as a fill in for a late withdrawal. Bruce played second to Joel ‘Grr’ Hunt and skipper Robin ‘maestro’ Staples, as they were opposed by Graham ‘hardnut’ Hartnup, Dave Charlesworth and Peter ‘miraculous’ Morales. Although Robin and his men won the first end, they were soon under the pump and feeling the pressure at 1 – 7 after six ends. However, a very welcome four shotter on the next end and a single two ends later had them within two shots of the lead. It was then, though, that Peter’s team really started firing and they won seven of the next eight ends to set up a massive lead of 21 – 8. The last four ends were shared with little impact on the score which finished at 25 – 11. To the casual observer, Graham had a very solid game as lead for the victors and the miracle man Peter worked a great deal of magic.

Peter ‘miraculous’ had very fine game!
