BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 18th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Starting with some reminders and information:
- Rookies, those members who began bowling after January 1st 2021, are reminded that the entry form for the Rookie Singles competition is posted on the notice board. You have until 5pm on Tuesday October 1st to place your name on the schedule. This will be a mid-week competition played on the Waratah Green, and it commences on Wednesday October 9th.
- Also posted on the notice board is the entry schedule for the Club’s Mixed Pairs Championship. The first round of this competition will be staged on Sunday October 13th with play being on the Waratah Green. Entries close at 5pm on Saturday October 5th.
- Bowlers are reminded that the blue rink markers are not garbage bins. We ask that you place any waste/rubbish directly into the large black bins located near the entrance to the Club. This will help keep the bowling greens tidier and save the Match Committee members from having to clean up each bowls day.
Social Bowls Wednesday
Twenty-eight bowlers turned out for a trundle on a clear but breezy Wednesday afternoon. The breeze (perhaps wind!) switched between north and south west on a regular basis and made for the occasional run against the bias. That said, overall the conditions were fairly pleasant and made for a convivial afternoon. Given the number of bowlers, the Match Committee organised one game of pairs and four of triples.
The 18-ender on rink 8 was a pairs game between Keith ‘the fox’ Edwards and John ‘junior’ Cummins on the one hand and Barry ‘smerfel’ Werfel and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie on the other. Now, last week the 18-ender was a blow-out that almost had us chasing medical support for the victims. This week not so, because, much to the relief of the Match Committee, the game was much closer. Like frisky colts, Edwards and Cummins burst from the barrier to lead 6 – 2 after six ends. However, Barry and Paul were then into stride and by the tenth end the scores were tied up at 7 all. And then, proving they were the better stayers, Barry and Paul outlasted the sprinters in the home straight to greet the judge under a tight rein at 14 – 10.
Keith and Barry had a keen tussle as leads!
In the game on rink 9, Viv Gear, Don ‘gentleman’ Chapman and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze battled against Bill ‘nonagenarian’ Meredith, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee and the unflappable Chris Forrester. Clive’s team blitzed the opposition in the first half of the match to have the opposition reaching for . . . well something! Like good sprinters, Clive’s team won six of the opening nine ends to lead 13 – 3! However, Chris got the whip cracking and their fortunes started to improve. A three shotter, followed by a four got them on the move, but they were still ten down after fifteen ends. With plenty of G and D, Chris’ team then won five of the last six ends but were restricted to singles and doubles which left them short on the scorecard. The final score was 22 – 17 in favour of team Neutze.
Clive was in good touch!
On rink 10, Joel ‘Grr’ Hunt, Richard ‘denman’ Denman and the nonagenarian wonder Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis tussled against Graham ‘hardnut’ Hartnup, Russell Dunstan and Peter ‘miracle man’ Morales. And, against expectations of the Match Committee, this game was a one sided event. Despite leading 4 – 1 after four ends, team Morales was soon under enormous pressure! Gordon’s team scored thirteen shots on the next four ends to lead 14 -4, and looked like they would sail off into the distance. Peter’s team did get the score to 8 – 14, but when they conceded a very painful five shotter on the eleventh end, they were eleven shots down. And then, the back half of the game was one-way traffic; Gordon’s team won seven of the final eight ends to coast home to a stunning victory of 35 – 11.
Week in, week out, Gordon blitzes oppositions!
On rink 11, Wal Markow, Paul McInerney and the Mick ‘potters’ Flynn faced off against Alex Christlo, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and the maestro Robin Staples. Mick’s team had the better of the opening five ends to lead 7 – 3, but then a change came over the game. With Neville in impressive form, team Staples won the next seven ends on the trot to set up a very solid lead of 16 – 7. And then, when they notched up an eye-watering five shotter on the fourteenth end, Robin’s team looked to be well in control. Mick’s team did have the better of the remaining ends, but the deficit was too great to make up. Wal and Alex had a great battle as leads with Alex mastering the windy conditions with those wide-swinging bowls of his. And, of course, the maestro kept chipping in with great regularity.
In the final game, Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees, Col ‘Bunnings’ Stone and Bob ‘wily’ Edwards butted heads against Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Arnold ‘rosie’ Lenczuk and Terry Norwood. With all team members in good touch, Terry’s team burst from the blocks to lead 7 – 0 after four ends. They then kept the momentum rolling and pushed the lead to 13 – 1 after eight ends. Under real pressure, Bob and his boys dug deeply into their reserves of determination, found some very good form and won four of the next five ends; they had a lifeline at 9 – 15. However, the opposition had other ideas, and when they notched up a mouth-watering five shotter on the sixteenth end, they had a very strong hold on the game. And, although they dropped the last couple of ends, team Norwood rolled home comfortable winners at 22 – 13.
The ‘dragon’ had a very solid game!
