  1. The Men’s Bowls Club executive committee met on Wednesday at 10am and the minutes from this meeting will be posted soon.
  2. The new competition sponsored by Gordon Lewis for Wednesday bowlers, the ‘Spirit of Bowral Foss Awards’ commenced on Wednesday. More on that below.

The semi-finals will be conducted this Saturday September 27th when Dugald Braithwaite / Oscar Whalin take on Gordon Lewis / Robin Staples, and Ian Duncan / Arnold Lenczuk take the battle up to Dave Coltman / Al McGhee. There should be some fine bowling for watching on the Wilson Green commencing at 12.30.
  4. The Major Singles Championship will be staged in October and the nomination schedule is now posted on the notice board. Come on gents, let’s build a long list of bowlers to take on this most prestigious of our major events.

Wednesday Bowling – ‘The Spirit of Bowral’

Wednesday saw the opening round of a competition for ‘Wednesday’ bowlers sponsored by Gordon Lewis, the Spirit of Bowral competition. This competition, to run over four weeks, will comprise triples, pairs and fours games played by randomly selected teams each week. Because this is an individual competition, points will be allocated to individual bowlers for wins (2) and draws (1 each), with a bonus point being added to each bowler’s tally for any victory by more than fifteen shots. The Match Committee will also keep a record of shots scored in each game so that in the event of a tie on points, the final places, first second and third, will be determined by the shots scored.

So, to the games in week one, which were triples matches except for two pairs games because of the numbers . . .

On rink 8, Shane Harvey, Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie and Chris ‘ebullience’ Forrester led all day to take the honours against a lacklustre Grahame Denman, Arnie ‘dickie knee’ Lenczuk and Terry Norwood 26 to 15. So, 2 points and 26 shots go to each of Shane, Paul and Chris while Grahame, Arnie and Terry receive 0 points and 15 shots.

On rink 10, Alex Christlo, Graham ‘leaning tower’ Hunt and Richard Denman with a juicy SIX shotter on the last end leap frogged Barry Werfel, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and the evergreen Gordon Lewis to snatch victory by 21 to 18. Phew, ouch!! So, 2 points and 21 shots go to each of Alex, Graham and Richard while zero points and 18 shots get allocated to each of Barry, Peter and Gordon.

On rink 11, Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow, Ian Duncan and Mick Flynn knocked over Jill ‘Hollywood’ Harwood, Paul McInerney and Viv ‘low’ Gear to the tune of 26 to 15. So each of Mick, Ian and Mark notch up 2 points and 26 shots while Jill, Viv and Paul get zero points and 15 shots.

On the far-side rink, Joel Hunt, Don Chapman and coach extraordinaire Robin Staples totally smothered Col Stone, Mike ‘fish’ Hook and Peter Morales by 28 to 11! Apparently Joel had a blinder totally obliterating the opposition and leaving mayhem in his wake! Good on you big fella!! So, with a huge win, each of Robin, Joel and Don notch up 3 points and 28 shots while their opposition each get zero points and 11 shots.

In the first of the pairs games on rink 7, Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees and Owen Williams bested Barb Wainberg and Dave ‘pot black’ Charlesworth by 26 to 15. So Denis and Owen each pocket 2 points and 26 shots while Barb and Dave get zero points and 15 shots.

In the other pairs game, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee and Joe O’Donnell grabbed seven of the last eight ends to shut out Terry ‘pep’ Salter and Junior Cummins by 25 to 16. So, 2 points and 25 shots go to each of Ted and Joe with zero points and 16 shots get allocated to Terry and Junior.

Therefore, after the first week, we have three bowlers leading the competition. By virtue of their ‘huge’ win by more than 15 shots which earned them a bonus point, Joel, Don and Robin share the lead on 3 points. Next week the teams will be re-drawn and Joel, Don and Robin are very unlikely to be on the same side. In fact, they are just as likely to be opposed to each other!

Happy bowling in week two of this month long competition!!
