BBC BROADCAST WEEKEND AUGUST 12th/13th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
A few items of information to begin:
- The Rookie Pairs will be run next Saturday August 19th with the semi-finals commencing at 9am and the final in the afternoon. Bowl well all you rookies!
- There are no Pennants matches next weekend with both Grades Two and Four having byes. Hopefully many of the pennant bowlers will join the others for social bowls.
- Former Vice-President of the Men’s Bowling Committee and now Port Macquarie resident Glenn Giese has been in contact and indicated he follows us on this site. He and his wife have settled in well at Port and don’t miss the Bowral climate at all. Glenn sends his best wishes to all members.
Saturday Pennants Bowling
Grade Two
In round 2 of the single gender Pennants Competition, the Bowral Grade Two team played host to the powerful side from Penrith. Bowral had not beaten Penrith in three years so the boys knew they were in for a tough match. Bowral was coming off a loss in the first round so they were tuned up for a big performance. So, the results were
Al McGhee, Stephen Della, Dugald Braithwaite, Mick Spong 24 Vs Penrith 19
Terry Butt, Steven Goddard, Ash Lewis, Kevin Stafford 17 Vs Penrith 18
With the overall shot count in favour of Bowral by 41 to 37, Bowral won the match taking 4 competition points to 1 for Penrith. And Kev’s team were only beaten on the last end as they hung in doggedly against their more favoured opponents. What a great result! Bowl well in round 3 fellows!
Below, the eight who vanquished the might of Penrith!
Al McGhee, Stephen Della, Dugald Braithwaite and skipper Mick Spong!
Terry Butt, Steven Goddard, Ash Lewis and skipper Kevin Stafford!
Grade Four
After a win in round one with four and a half competition points, the Bowral team travelled to Bundanoon to take on the locals. It was a bitterly cold afternoon with a nasty breeze sweeping the green from the south-west. Nonetheless, the Bowral boys rolled up well and entered the fray with confidence. The results were
Peter Cornwell, Scott Kennon, Dave Coltman, Steven Day 24 Vs Bundanoon 17
Arnold Lenczuk, Terry Norwood, Ian Crowe, Tony Oakes 13 Vs Bundanoon 27
Unfortunately for the Bowral bowlers, they secured only one competition point from the match while Bundanoon took away four points. For much of the match, Bowral led the overall count with Steve’s side well in front and Tony’s side hanging in, but Bundy finished much the stronger over the final few ends. This was not the result that Bowral was looking for, but that’s done and it’s time to regroup and come out firing in round 3 after the bye.
Social Bowls
Report to come when I get hold of the cards!
Sunday Zone Bowls
Sunday saw two Bowral bowlers in action in the second day of the Zone 5 Singles competitions. Kevin Stafford travelled to Austral in Sydney for the Senior Singles while Bob Crowley competed in the Reserve Singles at Bundanoon.
At Austral in the morning, Kevin won his Round of 16 match against Christopher Smith of Bargo by 25 – 17. This put Kev into the afternoon quarter final match against John Roach from Austral. Unfortunately, Kev found the Austral bowler much tougher and went down 4 – 25. Bad luck Kev but you obviously bowled well to reach the quarter final.
At Bundanoon in the morning, Bob Crowley had to play Guy Wilton from Camden in the round of sixteen. Wilton had been wiping his opponents in the earlier rounds so this was a tough assignment for Bob. To Bob’s credit he pushed Wilton and kept him on the green much longer than anyone else had been able to do. In the end though, Bob went down to the Camden bowler 13 – 25. Well bowled Bob!
