BBC BROADCAST WEEKEND DECEMBER 16th/17th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Southern Highlands Cup
Saturday saw the final round of the Southern Highlands Cup between Robertson, Bowral and Bundanoon. This final round was played on the tricky surface of the Bundanoon green. Going into this final round, Bowral led the points tally and only needed to score a couple of wins to secure the trophy.
Craig Norman and Ash Lewis secured the first win against Bundanoon by taking both sets 18 – 3 and 7 – 6. In the other pairs match, Terry Butt and Kev Stafford had a 1.5 to 0.5 sets win over Robertson with scores of 10 – 8 and 8 – 8.
Style, style, style! Ash and Kev on the mat!
In the first of the triples matches, Scott Kennon, Dave Coltman and Nathan Boyers had a two sets to nil win over Robertson 11 – 5 and 7 – 5. In the other triples game Al McGhee, Stephen Della and Dugald Braithwaite defeated Bundanoon two sets to nil with scores of 16 – 5 and 8 – 7.
Dave and Al were both strong performers!
With these results, Bowral comfortably won the trophy for the 11th consecutive year. Congratulations to all players from all three clubs for putting on such a good show. Special congratulations are due to the Bowral team who came away with such a decisive win.
BBC Triples Championship
On Sunday, the Club Triples competition continued with the playing of the semi-finals in the morning and the final in the afternoon.
In the first of the semis, Ted McPhee, Reta South and skipper Bob Edwards took on Eliza Kennon, Stephen Della and Dugald Braithwaite. Stephen and Dugald were defending champions and were keen to retain the title taking along Eliza in her first year of bowling. After trailing 3 – 5 early team Braithwaite strung together a number of ends to lead 24 – 6 at the halfway point. The second half of the game was quite even, but the huge early lead they had established meant that Dugald’s team came home strong winners at 31 – 12.
In the second semi, Gordon Lewis, Ash Lewis and Mick Spong battled against Scott Kennon, Terry Butt and Kevin Stafford. Team Spong opened very strongly to lead 17 – 2 after twelve ends and looked to be dominant. However, this turned out to be a classic game of two very different halves! Spong’s team was still ahead 21 – 10 with four ends to play, but then the comeback started. Kev’s team then scored 3, 4 and 1 to trail by three going into the last end. With his last bowl Kev brilliantly drove the jack into the ditch to hold four shots, and Mick’s last bowl, unfortunately for him, just dropped into the ditch. The final score was 22 – 21 in favour of team Stafford in a most remarkable game of bowls!
So, the final saw Eliza, Stephen and Dugald up against Scott, Terry and Kevin. Dugald’s team got the better of the start to lead 9 – 5 after eight ends. They then pushed this out to 18 – 9 after sixteen ends, and, with bowls in the head on every end, had their opponents under great pressure. Unlike the semi, there was to be no major turnaround for Kev’s team and they slipped further behind on the scorecard. Team Braithwaite proved to be too skilled and too consistent, and victory went to Eliza, Stephen and Dugald with a very impressive score-line of 36 – 14. Congratulations to Stephen and Dugald who defended their title, and also to Eliza who, in her first tournament win, covered herself in glory with excellent leading which had her team constantly on the front foot.
Eliza, Stephen and Dugald show their styles!
To the victors go the spoils! Congratulations!
