BBC PENNANTS SATURDAY MARCH 1st (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Bowral Bowling Club played host to the team from Robertson in round five of the grade six pennants on Saturday. It was an extremely hot day and plenty of slip, slop, slap and water was needed to keep the heat under control. At the beginning of the day, Bowral was ahead on the competition table, ahead of the Picton razorbacks on shot difference. With Picton heading to Taralga to take on the third placed Tigers, a win was essential if Bowral was to remain at the head of the table. Robertson won the toss and elected to take the mat for the 1pm roll off. The results of the three matches were:
Reta South, Chris Forrester, Gordon Lewis, Ash Lewis 30 Vs Robertson 12
Bowral made an excellent start in this match taking the first three ends and leading 8 – 0. By the seventh end, the lead was still eight shots at 11 – 3, and by the eleventh was 16 – 5. Reta and Chris were putting early bowls in the head and Ash was converting well to keep the Bowral side on top. When they netted a massive six shotter on the thirteenth, it became a matter of careful management on the run home. Overall, this was an exhibition of careful, businesslike bowling from the Bowral four.
Ash tidied up and converted well all day!
Bruce Yahl, Terry Norwood, Dave Coltman, Al McGhee 25 Vs Robertson 18
Bowral was under pressure immediately on the first two ends and skipper Al managed to restrict the damage to three shots. Bowral leads then found some form for the home team to lead by a shot after four. Robertson’s lead and third were making life difficult for Bowral, but by the eleventh end Bowral had edged to a three shot lead. However, Robbo grabbed a five shotter on the fourteenth and hung in tenaciously to lead by a shot on the nineteenth. A sizzling five to Bowral on the next end saw them grab back the lead, and a well-constructed three on the last ensured victory.
Skipper Al McGhee is in fine form this season!
Noel Fraser, Jim Neely, Gail Fraser, Steven Goddard 28 Vs Robertson 17
In this match, the Bowral four made a strong start to lead 13 – 2 after five ends. The Robbo team then got their heads down to win four of the next five ends and reduce the lead to five shots. By the thirteenth end the led was only four, but a mammoth six to Bowral on the fifteenth end gave them much needed breathing space. With Noel and Jim setting the ends up well and Gail and Steven cleaning up nicely, Bowral came home comfortable eleven shot winners.
Jim and Noel put Bowral in fine positions more often than not!
So, in a very solid display, Bowral banked all ten competition points from the encounter. This was a very pleasing outcome and, given that Picton dropped 0.5 points at Taralga, Bowral sits atop the table by that half point. Next Saturday, Bowral ventures to Bundanoon for what should be a torrid battle against the locals on their very tricky green. The teams to play Bundanoon are:
Noel Fraser, Jim Neely, Gail Fraser, Steven Goddard
Bruce Yahl, Terry Norwood, Dave Coltman, Al McGhee
Reta South, Peter Flight, Gordon Lewis, Ash Lewis
Go well!!
