The weekend of February 6/7th 2021 was mainly about the Zone 5 Pairs. In the Southern Highlands the weather was wet and dreary. However, eight intrepid social bowlers turned up for play at Bowral. Of those, six ventured onto the rink and achieved around nine interrupted ends of bowls through the consistent showers.
Towards the coast the weather was obviously better as all four rounds of the zone 5 pairs were completed over the weekend. In the Senior Pairs at Camden Ted McPhee and Bob Edwards had a bye in the morning in round one and lost in round two by 17 shots to 25 against a Picton team. A large Bowral entry for the öpen” Zone 5 pairs played at different locations within the zone. Round one losers were Bob Crowley (sub for Alistair McGhee) and Glynn Phillips 8-35 against a St Marys team. Last year champions Stephen Della and Kevin Stafford down 15-25 to a Wentworth Falls team. Ashley Lewis (sub for Chris Barritt-Eyles) and Dugald Braithwaite lost to a Glenbrook Panthers team by 14-26. Second round with still plenty of Bowral bowlers in the hunt. Tom DeGreenlaw and David Coltman won their first round against a Windsor team 24-22. Round two and they played another Bowral team of Carl Spilker and Nathan Boyers who had had a first round bye. Honours to Carl and Nathan by 18-12. Paul Leverett and Josh Woodcock after a comfortable first round win over a St Mary’s team by 35-16 appeared to have had a forfeit win as the score is registered as 0-0. Mick Spong and Mick Armstrong had a bye in the morning and played Hazelbrook team in the afternoon and recorded a 30-12 win. Round three was played on Sunday morning. Carl Spilker and Nathan Boyers were up against Hazelbrook and went down 13-27. Paul Leverett and Josh Woodcock against Austral eagles had a good win to take them into the quarter finals, 18-14. Meanwhile the two Mick’s were playing Wallacia and they also won by 29-17. So Quarter Finals on Sunday afternoon and Bowral had two teams still in the competition, Paul and Josh and the two Mick’s. Unfortunately the draw had them playing against each other so Bowral would be down to one remaining team for the semi Finals. Result was in favour of the two Mick’s with a 22-20 win over Paul and Josh. So Mick’s Spong and Armstrong go into the semi finals to be played against the Austral Eagles pair of M Hawker and I Fleming at 9am on Saturday 13th February at Campbelltown City Club with the final in the afternoon. I am sure everyone wishes them the best of luck. It would be great if Bowral Bowling Club was to win the Zone Pairs two years in a row.
