Christmas Greetings

The Bowral Bowling Club Super Scribe is away on holidays.  Hopefully he is sunning himself and having a wonderful relaxing time on board QE2..  In his absence I thought that this one Bowls News would be appropriate as it is the festive season and a time to wish everyone seasons greetings.

Wednesday 14th December we had a good turnout of bowlers for social bowls and a BBQ.   A very deluxe BBQ it was too, with not just your usual sausages, but eggs and mushroom and bacon and onions on the menu.  Appreciated by everyone in attendance.  Happy bowlers also were the four winners of hams, two on that Wednesday and two more on Wednesday 21st December.  A nice touch by the Men’s Bowling Committee for the festive season.

A similar BBQ was held on Saturday 17th December for those unable to attend on the Wednesday.  However, just 12 social bowlers were in attendance for this event.

Wednesday 21st December was the final bowl before the Christmas festivities commence.  A good roll up of 28 bowlers played on the Waratah  Green.

The traditional members lined up on rink 7, with Laurence Vipond, Bill Pope and Bill Rubie against Barry Werfel, John Flemming and John Cummings.  Honours to the Cummings team with a 25-14 victory.  This team shot away to a 9-1 lead after 7 ends before the Rubie team make a fight back and reduced the margin to 8-12.  Cummings team then had the edge until the finish at 18 ends.

On rink 10 Keith Scrivens, Wal Markow and Clive Neutze did not have much luck against Keith Scrivens, swinging, Tony Oakes and Bob Edwards.  The Neutze score of 16 shots was achieved in just 5 ends but was no match for the Edwards team who amassed 34 shots on all the other ends.

Graham Denman, Rick Reynolds and Richard Denman  were on rink 11 and playing Keith Edwards,  Colin Stone and Neville  Tanner.  Another significant margin was achieved in this game .  Richard’s team made the better start, 5 on the first end and 14-2 up after 6 ends. Neville’s team won the next 4 ends and were back to 8-14.  The two teams played almost shot for shot until end 20,  when Richard and team picked up a massive 8 shots and cemented their win 30-13

Rink 9 was another triples match with Steve Goddard skipping his team of Dennis Lees and his wife Margaret Goddard.  Opposition was skipper Steve Day with Owen Williams and Joe O’Donnell.  Two strong teams on the green in this match and there was nothing in the game in the first half with Steve Day ahead by just 1 shot at 9-8 after 11 ends.  A slight swing to the Goddard team early in the second portion of the game and at 18 ends they had a 3 shot margin leading 16-13.  End 19 was a match winning end when the Goddard team picked up 5 shots and they ran out winners 22-16.  Lovely to see Margaret bowling on a Wednesday, obviously an accomplished bowler and we hope she returns.

A pairs game for the final match, Graham Hunt with Gordon Lewis against Glen Geise and Robin Staples.  After 3 ends Glen and Robin 7-0 in front.  Immediate  retaliation by Graham and Gordon who won the next 5 ends to take a 9-7 lead.  Tight end for the next 5 ends, all of just 1 shot and Glen and Robin edged ahead 11-10.  The next 2 ends were probably the deciding ends as Glen and Robin scored a 4 and a 3 and then lead 18-10.  Never count out Gordon as there is no players more determined .  Graham and Gordon won 4 of the next 6 ends but were unable to close the gap enough and they went down fighting 22-16.   Without the weight of acting bowls secretary sitting on his shoulders it was great to see Glen in fine form.

Thanks to Bob Crowley for organizing  the BBQ with help from Graham Hunt, Chris Forrester and Ted McPhee while Terry Norwood was arranging the raffle and jackpot.  Hope I have not forgotten anyone and a special mention of thanks to Brain Payne who while not on the Men’s Board does a great job of collecting the green fees.

No bowls on Saturday 24th December but there will be bowls on Wednesday 28th December.

Have a Great Christmas everyone and all the Best for 2023.
