Saturday 12th October was the starting day for the Bowral Club Championship Fours event. Cool, in fact cold and drizzely weather greeted the players. Only seven teams entered, so the Woodcock team had a first round bye.
On rink eight, the North Green being favoured over the Springett after some dampness in the air, Carl Spilker’s Team was up against Mike Holmewood’s team. Dugald Braitwaite was absent but ablely replaced by Oscar Whelin. Along with Club Singles Champion Jim Neely and Noel Fraser a very strong team. Opponents were Don Coleman, Harold Wall, Robin Staples and Mike. Quite a close tussle eventuated, with Mikes team slightly ahead in the first half of the game. By end 13 Carl had leveled the score and then won the next 6 ends to surge ahead 19-11. Final score was in favour of Carl 21-17.
On rink nine, Kel Limbrick, Rick Reynolds, Brian Payne and Mick Flynn were up against another strong team with Gordon Lewis, Ashley Lewis, Stephen Della and Mick Spong. Apparently Mick was away playing at Bargo so Ashley skipped and Dennis Beatty replaced Mick. A comfortable win to Ashley 31-14, with half of Mick Flynn’s score coming in the last two ends. Dennis Beatty was an excellent replacement as he seemed to be plastering the jack all game long.
Final game looked fairly evenly matched. Peter Watson, John Edmonds, Brian Porter and Peter Morales against Dave Riddell, Graham Hunt, Steve Day and Bob Edwards. Early advantage was to the Bob team just keeping their nose in front. After 11 ends they lead 11-8. As so often happens, a swing in the game occured and the Peter team started winning ends. They won eight of the next ten ends and in these ten ends scored 15 shots to Bob’s 2 shots. The final score 23-13 in favour of Peter Morales
So next Saturday the semi finals will be between Carl Spilker and Peter Morales and Mick Spong and Josh Woodcock. Meanwhile the three losing teams should be in a draw to play for the Club Fours Plate. As always players should watch the notice board. The Four draw is available in the website in “Draws and Results”.
Sunday was the opening round of the Club Mixed Pairs. This year to be played as a three match round robin format with the top two teams playing off in the final. When I have results I will update the posts.
