Club Fours Plate Winners

Congratulations to winners of the Club Fours Plate held on Saturday 26th September 2020. Winning team was Skipper Bob Edwards with lead Tony Oakes, Second Graham Hunt and third Ted McPhee.  Play took place on a bitterly cold day with a gale from the West to further complicate the event.   Defeated team was Robin Staples with Don Coleman, Terry Norwood  and  Peter Lesureur   Bob and team won 20-14 and well deserved this win being the better team.  The Staples team started strongly holding shots on the first three ends until the deadly Bob’s ön shots” changed the situation in favour of his team so that they lead 4-0.  For six ends the Staples team held sway and erased the deficit so that at end 9 they had crept ahead to 8-5.  Then the team had a major lapse of concentration and allowed Bob’s team 4 shots on the next end to trail by one shot.  Team Bob grabbed the initiative and also won the next three ends to take back the lead 15-8.  Still a little fight left in the Staples team and they rallied to win three of the next four ends and reduce Bob’s lead to one shot, 13-14.  This was end 17 and the superior play of team Bob won them the next three ends and they pushed out to a winning 20-13 lead, lost the last end but still won comfortably 20-14.   A good win with all players contributing to a solid win, well done.

Club Championship Fours Semi Finals.  The semi finals of the Fours were also held on this bleak afternoon.  Match one was Ashley Lewis team with Gordon Lewis, Alistair McGhee and David Coltman against Glynn Phillips, Dennis Beatty, Stephen Della and skipper Kevin Stafford.  Kevin was skip as both Mick Spong and Chris Barritt-Eyles were missing, though they had a couple of very strong replacements. An even start with the score 2-3 to Ashley after 4 ends.  On end 6 Ashley  scored a welcome 5 shots and they pushed ahead to be 12-2 leaders at end 8.  Kevin’s team had the better of the next few ends and closed the margin 11-17 at end 15.  Three ends then to Ashley saw them move ahead comfortably to 22-11.  Even though his team returned the favour and granted Kevin’s team a five shot end they had enough of a lead to end up 24-17 winners.  Match two was Noel Fraser, Jim Neely, Carl Spilker and Dugald Braithwaite versus Nathan Boyers, Bob Crowley, Paul Leverett and skipper Josh Woodcock.  Braithwaite team lead early with a 4-1,lead before the Woodcock team had a super run of ends including four ends of 3 shots  and by end 14 were in a match winning position leading 16-9.  With that howling gale anything could happen and it did as the Braithwaite team won 6 of the next 7 ends of which three were also 3 shot ends and slipped ahead to win 21-18.  The Braithwaite and Lewis teams were up next day, Sunday, to play the Final and all competitors were hoping for warmer and less windy conditions.
