The weekend of the 27th October 2018 was very busy. Major event was the Final of the Bowral Bowling Club Handicap Singles.
This promised to be an evenly contested final between Dugald Braithwaite playing off 3 shots and Noel Fraser playing off generous 11 shots.
Dugald played the more consistent bowls with constant pressure on Noel. After 8 ends Dugald had overcome his handicap disadvantage and leveled the score at 14 shots each. From there onwards he steadily pulled ahead to win 31-20. The last two years the event has been won by Ashley Lewis so the low handicap players have continued to be the winners in this championship. Well done to Dugald.
The semi finals of the Club Championship Fours were also played on the Saturday. The Mick Spong team of Ashley Lewis, Russell Fahey, and Russell Knight proved too strong for Greg taylor’s team of Owen Williams, Nathan Boyers and David Coltman. The Spong team won 36-5. In the other match the score was much closer. Dulgald Braitwaite led a team with Noel Fraser, Jim Neely and Carl Spilker against the team led by Peter Morales with Barry Werfel, Graham Hunt and the very handy substitute Stephen Della. In a low scoring game Dugald held the lead from the fourth end but was never far in front. On the 19th end Dugald led 15-11 but dropped 5 shots on the 20th end to go into the final end16-15 down. The Peter Morales team were holding a winning shot when Dugald came to the mat. A drive from Dugald put the jack out of play and on the replayed end Dugald’s team scored three shots to win 18-16. Very close. The Final should be next Saturday 3rd November.
A Semi Final of the Fours Plate competition was also played. Glen Geise, Gordon Lewis, Billy Meredith and Robin Staples played Joel Hunt, Richard Denman, Bob Crowley and Mick Flynn. With the Mick Flynn team missing a couple of the original team all the members of the Staples team contributed to a 25-14 win.
Matches were played on both Saturday and Sunday in the Club Mixed Pairs. Jim Neely and Gail Fraser had a comfortable win over Anne Brenning and Gordon Lewis by 41-6. Allison Pryce and Dan Ticehurst played Pam Woods and Robin Staples. Pam played very well to enable a win to her team by 21-16. Barry Werfel (sub for Brian Porter) and Rita South defeated the Hardman couple by 20-17. Two matches went to an extra end to decide the winner. Enid Brown and Don Coleman defeated Lynne Boshier and Keith Edwards (Sub for Bob Edwards) by 24-18 after they were locked on 18 all after the final end. The match between Sylvia Handley with Kevin Stafford and Fran Post with Ashley Lewis was also tied at 18 all after 21 ends. In the extra end Fran and Ashley scored 1 shot to win.
The Final of the Club Championship Fours and the Plate should be played this coming weekend. The matches in the Mixed Pairs should also continue.
