Halfway point in the Moss Vale Motor Group Challenge. Graham Hunt and Bob Edwards have opened up a four shot lead. They followed up last weeks winning perforamce (35 shots) with a win over the top team of Kevin Stafford and Carl Spilker. Final score was 28-17 which is good enough to have given them a scratch win without the benifit of their handicap. They lead with 83 shots.
Second are Bill Pope and John Cummings on 79 shots. They beat last weeks table leaders, Ken Looke and Brian Payne by 29 -10. A convincing win even with a three shot handicap start. Bill and John have a maximum 28 shot handicap but are playing well above this handicap and must be strong contenders for the overall win. Ken and Brian have slipped back into the pack on 66 shots.
Third are Richard Denman and Mick Flynn on 74 shots. This week they beat Jim Starkey (subing for Brian Elliott) and Barry Werfel 27-15. With consistent scores of 23, 24 and 27 they are doing just what is required to end up at the top of the table. Barry Werfel and team are on 61 shots, also in the pack.
Fourth is Robin Staples and Mike Holmewood two shots behind Mick on 72. They had the best score of the day with 31 shots. However, the losers in this game were Don Weller and Keith Edwards, and they finished second best of the day on 30 shots. Mike and Robin removed the 11 handicap shots in four ends ends to lead 12-11. They then went to sleep with much grumbling about the wind and green running two seconds faster than recommended while Don and Kieth played very well and by the 14th end were leading 27-17. A couple of good ends from the Mike team and an unfortunate drive by Keith which resulted in 6 shots away left the two teams equal on 30 shots with one end to play. Luck was with the Mike team to win 31-30. Despite three loses Don and Keith have amassed 66 shots and are at the top end of the pack with a good chance still of being on the winners list.
In other matches, Kel Limbrick and Dave Riddell narrowly defeated Billy Meredith and Gordon Lewis by 23-21. Both teams are on 59 shots. Joe O’Donnell (sub for Kevin Jones) and Bob Crowley won over John Edmonds and Don Coleman by 23-14. Bob’s team are on 63 shots and Don’s 53 shots. The final game was Nathan Boyers (sub for Josh Woodcock) and Dan Ticehurst against Ted McFee ( sub for Peter Morales) and Brian Porter. The Porter team won 22-16, the six shots being the handicap margin. Brian’s team is on 63 shots and Dan’s team on 59. Still anyones competition with three weeks to be played. The table is shown in “Draws and Results”.
When the players were back in the Clubhouse Mens Bowling President Gordon Lewis presented badges to Carl Spilker winner of the Club Minor Singles and the runner up Bob Crowley. Gordon lamented the lack of support for the final with very few members turning up to watch a match which was of very high quality with at least 21 touchers during the match.
