RSL Shield Round 1 and 2

Weekend of 7th and 8th September 2019.  Conditions for play best explained by the photo below.  A full blown gale

Eight team for the competition, sadly two less than last year for this excellent varied format competition.  The fours games were played on Saturday and the second round, Singles and Triples played on Sunday morning.

Team one of C Neutze, Kel Limbrick, Viv Gear and Dave Riddell.  Kel was unavailable so the team had a handy substitute in Stephen Della.  They played team two, Graham Hunt, Bob Crowley, Bob Edwards and Robin Staples.  An effortless win for the Riddell team.  Consistent play from Stephen, valuble assistance from Clive and Viv and some excellent shot making from Dave saw them win comfortably 28-12.  In the second game Eric Willacy, Alistair McGhee, Paul Leverett and Josh Woodcock played last years winners Oscar Wahlin, Tim Blake, Dave Coltman and Kevin Stafford.  A dominant win to the Stafford team handling the gale with ease.  They won 15 of the first 17 ends and won by 36 shots to 10.  A great way to start their campaign to repeat last years win.  Keith Edwards, Owen Williams, Don Coleman and Bill Meredith played Mick Flynns team with lead Rick Reeynolds, Richard Denman and third Chris Forrester.  A win to Mick, but only just, the score being 25-22.As the score indicates a very even match.  Scores level after twelve ends at 12-12 and just two shot difference at the end.  Final game, Brian Porter, John Edmonds, Peter Watson and Peter Morales. against Russell Knight, Gordon Lewis, Greg Lewis and Ashley Lewis  A great win for Peters team, winning 29-19.  Considering that the Lewis team has three top grade players in the team to win by a comfortable margin was a splendid effort.

On Sunday the teams leads played each other, 31 ends four bowls singles.  Meanwhile the other team members played triples. The Riddle team played the Woodcock team.  In singles Clive Neutze had a win over strong competition in Eric Willacy by 33-25.  In the Triples the Woodcock team found the form that deserted them on Saturday and won 39-14.  The  Meredith team played the Morales team.  Singles was Keith Edwards against Brian Porter and a close win to Keith 28-25.  Triples winners were the Meredith team with 29 shots to Morales 13.  Kev Jones substituted for Peter Watson in this game and the team did not find the form of the previous day.  The Flynn team was up against the Lewis’s and Mick had the benifit of Stephen Della as substitute.  Single s was Russell Knight against Rick Reynolds.  A win to Russell 29-22 but a good effort from Rick to keep the margin close.  In a fairly low scoring game the Lewis family also returned to form winning 21-14.  Finally Stafford versus Staples.  Oscar Whalin won the singles against Graham Hunt 26-19 with Graham putting up a good fight.  The Stafford triples team thrashed an out of form Staples team 26-16.  With four ends to go the Stafford team lead 26-5. A slight lapse in concentration, as it had all been too easy, allowed the Staples team to score 12 shots in the last four ends to make the score a little more presentable.

So the score board. (in “Draws and Results”)  Defending Champions Stafford lead on 88 shots.  Second, 9 shots behind on 79 is the Meredith team.  Third after a great fours game is the Riddell team on 75.   Fourth, after a strong triples game is the Woodcock team on 74. Lewis team on 69 shots, Morales on 65, Flynn on 61 and trailing the field at a walk is Staples on 47.

Next Saturday the competition reches a conclusion with the teams playing pairs.
