Wednesday 20th November 2019 was the men’s Club Senior Singles Final Day. Kevin Jones versus Robin Staples. Kevin’s road to the final was as follows; Defeated Kel Limbrick in round one, John Edmonds next, followed by a forfeit from Peter Watson. A memorable come from behind semi final with a 31-30 win over Mike Holmewood. Kevin was not new to the Senior Singles Final having won the event in 2013 with a win over Geoff Jones. Robin’s journey started with the ever dangerous Peter Morales, then the Senior Singles winner in the last four out of five years, Noel Fraser. Mick Flynn next and then a hard semi final against the 2017 runner up Eric Willacy.
The final result was a win to Robin over Kevin by 31-7. Robin won the toss and used long ends to his advantage to ease away to a 17-0 lead. Then Kevin found his range and won three of the next four ends to trail by 18-4. We waited for another huge comeback by Kevin, but it was not to be. Three one shot ends in the next eight was not enough and Robin went on for the win. Congratulations to Kevin for a great tournament and to quote Dan Ticehurst, “Robin carried his good form over the past month or so into the game and had a comfortable win”.
Two matches of the Club Handicap Singles were also played on Wednesday. A close tussle between Clive Neutze (11) and Peter Morales (13). Seven ends and score 7-6 to Clive. Seventeen ends and the game had swung slightly towards Peter, leading17-15. Twenty seven ends and Clive still one shot behind, 26-27. Two ends later and the same one shot margin before on the final end Peter scored a four to win 31-27. The other match was Viv Gear (14) against Mick Flynn, a generous (13). Viv, another player having good form of late, took the early advantage. leading 7-0 at four ends and 10-8 at ten ends. At this point Mick started to get on top and drew level and then pulled away. Viv won four of the next fourteen ends and Mick recorded at 31-16 win. Full draw shown in “Draws and results”.
