Bowls at Bowral Bowling Club remains quiet. While the Southern Highlands is not in lock down preventing bowls, we await the start of the Triples Championships and activities are limited to social bowls. Mid winter, and definitely a time to dress up in winter woolies. Social bowls on Wednesday 14th July attracted 33 bowlers onto the greens with the temperature of 11 degrees and a fluctuating Westerly breeze. Three games played on the grass, which in horse racing terms would be classified as dead going, and four on the synthetic classified as lightening fast. Saturday 17th July with temperature of 9 degrees and a howling Westerly saw 8 bowlers playing of which 2 were visitors from Bargo. They must be used to the cold in Bargo as one visitor played in shorts! Despite the wind and the speed of the green I understand a high standard of bowls was exhibited throughout the game with the final bowl from Gordon Lewis a winning shot for his team of Carl Spilker, Glen Geise and Brian Porter. Final score was a low 16-15 shot over the team of Greg Lewis, Kev V, Terry Norwood and Keith Edwards as lead. A good week for Gordon Lewis as he achieved the same result in his Wednesday game when his last bowl of the match also slid into the count to achieve another one shot win for him and his partner Richard Denman.
Zone 5 Triples await some resolution of the Covid restrictions before a new date can be found to play the first round. Club Championship Triple entries have closed and first round is scheduled for 31st July. I note that this event is now two bowls triples which I believe is a move away from the three bowl played in the past years. However, the Minor Triples is three bowl triples with entries closing on Sunday 1st August and first round the 14th August. Full details of the Dan Ticehurst Triples are now on the notice board. I understand no lunch supplied and still four slots available for Bowral teams.
