Tulip Festival 2018

The Bowral Bowling Club Tulip Festival was held on the afternoon of October 20th 2018.

While the Club has no bowls secretary the club is operating in a bit of a vacuum.  Volunteers are doing a good job but preparation for the Tulip Festival day were late in getting under way.  As a result there was not enought time to enable the event to take place at Tulip time, alongside the Ladies Tulip Festival Day as traditionally occurs.  The revised day was 20th October 2018.  However, with a week to go only ten teams had nominated.  This number was well below the number required for a finacially successful event.  A crisis meeting was held were strong pressure from a section of the club resulting in  the event being staged in a modified format.

The format decided was a 1pm start with two games of two bowl triples of fifteen ends.  Winner by points and margins.

Ten teams lined up for the competition.  It was good to see  teams from Clovelly and Robertson taking part, as well as individual players from other clubs joining Bowral teams.  There were a couple of social  games taking place at the same time, but they did not join the Tulip event, no doubt put off by the $30 entry for two games with little chance of winning.

The weather was kind for the first game but shortly after the second game started a violent trough passed overhead bring some rain, strong gusts of win and a rapid drop in temperature.  The second game was called off by the umpire after ten ends.  The storm had passed through by then, but there was no complaints from the competitors as everyone was wet and cold.

The results are posted below (sorry if they are not as clear as I would have wished).  An innovation for this event was the excellent scoring system devised by Carl Spilker, with the results appearing smartly onto the club screen as Carl  fed the entries into the computer.  It was great to see the two visiting teams took out the top two places.  Mick Scarcolla’s team from Clovelly being the winners from Graham Tutt’s team from Robertson in second.  The remaining spots were teams from Bowral, David Coltman’s team, Josh Woodcock team and Dugald Braitwaite team.
