Saturday there were three pennant trial games and one of social bowls. In the social game there was a close tussle between John Cummings, Joel Hunt and Rick Reynolds playing Kevin Jones, Billy Dodwell and Barry Werfel. Barry’s team came out on top at 18-15. The first pennant trial was David Coltman, Ashley Lewis, Nathan Boyers and Mick Spong against Noel Fraser, Jim Neely, Carl Spilker and Dugald Braithwaite . The Dugald team had a comfortablw win at 30-8. Peter Watson, Oscar Whelan, Don Coleman and Don Chapman played Alister McGhee, Gordon Lewis, Clive Neutze and Robin Staples. The Staples team had the initial lead helped by some good lead bowls by Alister. Around halway the tables swung with Oscar delivering some great bowls Don’s team lead 20-13 before a late fight back by Robin’s team, but not enough to catch Don’s team who won 22-19. Finally Glen Geise, Richard Denman, Mick Flynn and Peter Morales played Bob Crowley, Graham Hunt, Billy Meredith and Bob Edwards. Having played for ten weeks on the synthetic green, many players found the adjustment to a slower grass quite difficult. Bob’s team with 20 defeated Peter on 16.
Sunday was the first full round of the Club championship Singles. Paul Leverett forfeited allowing Bob Crowley to advance. Jim Neely had a comfortable win over Rick Reynolds. Stephen Della advanced beating Bob Edwards. Dugald Braithwaite was too strong for David Coltman. Dugald played very consistent and tight bowls winning ends of 4,3,4,3 and 2 in the mid section of the match. Oscar Whelan had a good win over Clive Neutze. Oscar played a very good game and will give some of the fancied players a good run for their money. Carl Spilker beat Mick Flynn by 31-11. Dennis Beatty also had a win. Playing against Josh Woodcock Dennis won five straight ends to go 5 shots up after 15 ends. He increased this lead to 10 shots after 25 ends. Josh was unable to close the gap with Dennis winning 31-20. Finally in the closest game of the day Noel Fraser had a well desereved win over Ashley Lewis, 31-28. Noel lead throughout the game drawing out to a 10 shot lead after 24 ends. But you never count Ashley out and he won 7 ends to close the gap to 1 shot. However, Noel held his nerve and finished winning the last two ends to win. The next round draw will be posted on the notice board but may be delayed by Zone commitments.
I will post the pennant draw for our two teams below, but you will also find it in the “Pennants” section. The singles draw also, and this is in “draws and results”.
Finally Stephen Della accepted a cheque from Roz Benton for cancer research being the money raised the previous week at the Chris Benton Memorial Day. I believe the figure was $808.35.
