First round of the 2019 Pennant competition on Saturday. All three Bowral teams were playing away from home, Grade 2 at Wallacia, Grade 73 at Campbelltown City and Grade732 at Picton.
The grade 2 team lost to Wallacia by 61shots to 46. Losing all three rinks Bowral lost 10-0. Results were much closer at Campbelltown with Bowral only losing by 1 shots scoring 51 shots to the Citys’ 52. Campbelltown won two rinks and Bowral 1. At Picton Bowral had the only win of the day, by just 3 shots 62-59. Very close results with Picton holding 5 shots on the last end played before a Bowral bowls sneeked in to claim one shot. Only having the zone results for reference I can only report on the Picton game. Bob Edwards team lost 21-18, Don Chapman team lost 23-17 and the Staples team won 27-15. Bowral is at the bottom of Grade 2 and Bowral 732 team is third behind Bargo (10-0) and Campbelltown (9-1). Some errors are apparent in the Zone website so will wait until next round before updating the Pennant page.
On the weekend of 2/3 March the Zone Singles events started. Bowral had quite a few entrants in the three events. Six Bowral players entered the Zone Singles. Bob Crowley and Josh Woodcock both forfeited. Leif Whalin played against Wallacia’s Luke Fleming and put up a great fight against a very good player to only lose by31-25. Dugald braithwaite did very well winning both his matches. The first against Dave Ruse31-11 and the second against Todd Sharp 31-15. Carl Spilker went down 31-19 agaist Ron Ionn. Nathan Boyers only lost 31-27 against another top ranking player, Matt Lovett-Jeans. In the President Reserve Singles Mick Flynn was close, only losing 31-28 to Gary Trevethan. Bob Edwards lost 31-9 to Tim Barnes. Finally in the Senior Singles Noel Fraser forfeited and Jim Neely beat Roy Wilson31-27.
As a result of the first weekend of singles two players advanced to play on the 10th March. Dugald Braithwaite marched onwards to the semi final with two wins, over George Sotiriou 31-25 and Luke Flemming 31-15. We wish Dugald every luck when he plays the semi final, and hopefully the final, at Austral on the 24th March. In the Senior Singles Jim Neely lost to Vince Calabrese by 31-24.
