BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY MARCH 11th         (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Bits and pieces to kick start the info:

  1. Members will all now be aware of the passing of long time bowler and BBC Board deputy chair Harold Wall. Harold’s family are sending him off today, Thursday 12th, in a private service in Bowral. His wake, to which all are invited, will be held at the BBC from 12 noon. RIP Harold.
  2. Pennants competitions continue this coming weekend with the playing of the round 3 matches on Saturday and the completion of the rain-affected round 2 matches from the previous Saturday. On Saturday March 14th, Grade Six will travel to take on the Bargo team, while Grade Seven will host the lads and lasses from Picton. On Sunday, Grade Six will travel to Taralga to finish off the ‘Tigers’, while the Grade Seven fours will continue their battles against the Camden Men’s outfit. Bowl well on both days, and do Bowral proud!
  3. Any member who thinks it might be time to have your hearing checked might consider visiting the ‘Centre for Hearing’ in Bowral which is a new sponsor of the Club. If you do make a visit, mention that you are a member of BBC so that they get some positive feedback.
  4. Social bowlers are reminded that if you would prefer to play over 18 ends instead of the usual 21 to let the Match Committee know by writing ’18’ beside you name on the sign on sheet, or indicating the same when you phone in. If there are enough of you, we will make up a game of 18 end triples to accommodate you.
  5. The draft minutes the Men’s Bowling Committee executive’s latest meeting on March 4th are now posted on the notice board for your information. If you have any queries, don’t hesitate to ask any of the committee members for clarification.

Wednesday Social Bowls

Thirty-eight bowlers fronted for a roll on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon, free of any threat of rain! Wonderful! The Match Committee organised two matches of pairs and five of triples.

In a pairs game on the Wilson Green, Richard Denman and Chris ‘Tooheys Old’ Forrester made a ripping start against Ian Duncan and Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight to lead 8 – 0 after four ends, and then pushed out to 18 – 5 after eleven. Just when it looked as though there would be a call for smelling salts to pep up the trailing pair, Ian and Peter ran together five ends to be within five shots on the seventeenth.  However, Richard and Chris then steadied, won three of the last four ends, and made it to the clubhouse 23 – 16 victors. Toohey’s Old never tasted better!

As smooth as silk is the Chris Forrester delivery!

On rink 8 of the Waratah Green, Peter Marshall, Graham Hartnup, and Joe ‘rusty nail’ O’Donnell made a sound start against Charles ‘morse’ Coode, Peter Martin and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn to lead 4 – 0 after three ends. However, Mick’s team then got cracking to win five of the next six ends and lead 9 – 5. Joe’s trio clawed the score back to 10 – 12 by the thirteenth and looked like they were holding their own. From there though, they found the going tough as the Flynn team managed to get the better of them in the run home, with the final score being 21 – 13 to Mick and his boys.

The style of the wily Mick Flynn!

In the next game, Terry ‘pep’ Salter, Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt and the evergreen Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis made a frightfully slow start against Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Paul Rubie and Viv ‘third’ Gear to trail 0 – 7 after five ends! Ouch! However, a four shotter on the next end, and another on the tenth, had team Lewis within three and up and running. And when they cracked another pair of fours on the thirteenth and fourteenth ends, they hit the lead for the first time. With  his foot on the throat, the ‘cobbler’ was not about to let up, and he drove his trio home to a 24 – 18 victory.

G. Hunt, the ‘leaning tower of Pisa’ got the occasion bowl on the jack; J.Hunt, ‘AC/DC’, out-bowled him!

In the pairs game on rink 10, Barb Wainberg and Terry Norwood made a slow start against Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees and Dave Charlesworth to trail 2 – 5 after five ends, but when they notched up a four shotter on the sixth, they hit the lead. The scores were then 10 all on the eleventh, but a run of five ends put Barb and Terry in a sound position at 18 – 10. Not done, Dave and Denis grabbed a four on the nineteenth to put the ‘frighteners’ into their opponents, but Barb and Terry steadied to hold on and win 20 – 17 in a close one.

In the next game, Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow, Neil Puckeridge and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze led 4 – 1 after three ends against Barry Werfel, Wal Markow and Owen ‘the fox’ Williams, but a five shotter to team Williams on the fifth gave them the lead. Owen’s trio then continued to dominate and a SIX shotter on the tenth had Clive’s team looking for oxygen! Into the second half, Owen’s team continued the onslaught, so that by the seventeenth end, their lead was 27 – 8. Clive’s team salvaged a couple of shots, but the final score was a whopping 29 – 10 to Owen’s trio!

Owen outfoxed the opposition on the day!

On rink 12, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Mike ‘fish’ Hook and Peter Morales were matched early by Alex Christlo, Neville ‘hipster’ Tanner and the wily Bob Edwards to be 4 all after five ends. Bob’s team then hit a purple patch to win seven of the next eight ends to set up a 13 – 6 lead and have the opposition gasping. A couple of doubles to Peter’s team then moved them to within three shots, and then, with three ends to play, they were four down and still in with a sniff. However, the wily Bob, called the shots over the final ends, and got his boys home at 21 – 11.

In the final game on rink 15, Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Arnie Lenczuk and the sorcerer Robin Staples made a slow start against Shane Harvey, Paul McInerney and John ‘junior’ Cummins to be down 1 – 6 after four ends. However, they shifted this to 6 all by the eighth, but a massive SIX shotter to team Cummins on the tenth changed the lead. Junior’s team kept the pressure on to lead 17 – 12 with four ends to play, but then the sorcerer got to work! Waving his magic over the last four ends, Robin’s team then stormed home to a resounding 24 – 17 victory, and left junior to contemplate what might have been!!
