BBC BROADCAST WEEKEND MARCH 14/15th

BBC BROADCAST WEEKEND MARCH 14/15th         (Terry Norwood at the desk)

A few chewy bits to begin with:

  1. Rounds 2 and 3 of the Pennants Competitions were completed over the weekend, so look for the details on those below.
  2. Social bowlers are reminded to write ’18’ beside your name on the sign on sheet, or leave the information if phoning in, if you wish to play 18 ends rather than 21. If there are enough wanting to play 18 ends only, the Match Committee will organise a game for you.
  3. Members are reminded that the minutes of the latest Men’s Bowling Committee are now posted on the notice board for your info. If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to speak with any member of the committee, Peter Flight, Robin Staples, Ian Duncan, Graham Hunt, Chris Forrester, Richard Denman, Ted McPhee or Terry Norwood.
  4. Ian Duncan still has a few items of the ‘old red’ uniform to sell at very low prices for anyone who would like a souvenir or some casual ware.
  5. The records of Peter Flight and Ian Duncan show that the hand out of the new club shirts has been completed, so if any full bowling member has not yet received a shirt, please contact Peter or Ian.

Saturday Pennants

Grade Six

The Bowral side ventured to Bargo to take on the locals in round 3 of the pennants competition. Fortunately for everyone, the weather was  excellent and the green in fine condition.

In the first game, Mick Fisher, Dennis Beatty, Peter Martin and Dugald Braithwaite made a slow start to trail 1 – 7 after five ends, but then kicked into gear and by the thirteenth, had pegged back the opposition to be within a shot. Bargo then advanced the score to 18 – 11, only to have the Bowral boys drag the score back to 15 – 18 with one end to play. Unfortunately for Bowral, Bargo bagged a double on the last and netted the competition point for that rink.

On the next rink, Peter Flight, Barb Wainberg, Ross Barber and Alastair McGhee made a strong start to lead 7 -2 after six ends, and then a four shotter on the eleventh followed by a couple of singles had them in a strong position at 17 – 6. This became 18 – 10 on the sixteenth, but Bargo dug in and had the Bowral four on the back foot. Under pressure, Bowral managed to restrict the flow of shots as Bargo kept snatching the ends. In a tight finish, Bowral hung on to get to the Club House 18 – 16 victors. A competition point for Bowral!

In the final game, Noel Fraser, Jim Neely, Oscar Whalin and Ash Lewis lost four of the first five ends to trail 1 – 8, but then found the line and length to make it 6 – 8 after nine. The Bargo four then advanced their lead to 15 – 6 at the thirteenth, but Bowral dug in again and clawed their way back to 15 – 18 with one end to play. Unfortunately, Bargo grabbed a single on the last end, and notched up the win 19 – 15. It was a tough encounter with some fine bowling coming from the Bargo boys.

So, overall, Bargo won the day taking 9 competition points, while Bowral managed only the single point. Keep at it Bowral, brighter days are just around the corner!

Grade Seven

For round three, Bowral played host to the ladies and gents from Picton, and, although the gusty wind made things somewhat tricky, the weather was a vast improvement on the washout of the previous week.

On rink 10 of the Waratah Green, Arnie Lenczuk, Richard Denman, Mick Flynn and Gordon Lewis made a strong start to be 8 – 3 to the good after five ends, and then dominated the opposition to lead 20 – 3 after eleven. However, Picton finally found some better form and commenced a fight back in the run home. A four shotter really got them cracking, although a couple of doubles to Gordon’s four kept them at arm’s length. Far from surrendering, Picton got the better of the closing ends, but Bowral had enough in reserve to get home 25 – 17. A point for Bowral.

In the next game, Ted McPhee, Clive Neutze, Reta South and Bob Edwards made a cracking start to lead 11 – 3 after seven ends and have the opposition under quite some pressure. However, they dropped back to earth by conceding a five shotter on the next end, and by the eleventh end it was all square at 12s. Picton then edged to the lead, but a nine shot haul over three ends put Bowral six shots to the good, and despite dropping a three on the last, they made it home by four at 23 – 19.

In the third game, Chris Forrester, Ricci Wilson, Terry Norwood and Robin Staples started very well with an amazing SEVEN shotter on the fourth, and when they clocked up a SIX on the tenth end, they led 20 – 5. To their great credit, Picton hung in to win five of the next six ends, but singles meant they were still 11 – 21 behind. And when Bowral bagged another SIX shotter on the twentieth, they were home and hosed. The final score was a resounding victory to Bowral at 29 – 13.

So, round 3 of the competition was a very successful one for the Bowral outfit, winning all three rinks and, consequently, the overall total as well. 10 competition points then lodged in the bag for Bowral to put them level on points with Camden Men’s, who were to return on Sunday to complete round 2.

Sunday Pennants

Grade Six

The Bowral bowlers returned to Taralga to see if they could reverse the eight shot deficit over the remaining seventeen ends on the encounter.

On rink 3, Noel Fraser, Jim Neely, Ross Barber and Ash Lewis resumed their match in which they led 18 – 11 after fifteen ends, only to see Taralga immediately grab a couple of singles and set the game alight. Bowral steadied with a single, but by the twentieth, Taralga had closed to within three and looked menacing. Undeterred, Ash cracked the whip and the Bowral boys closed with and impressive four shotter and victory at 23 – 16.

On the next rink, Mick Fisher, Dennis Beatty, Peter Martin and Oscar Whalin resumed at 13 – 19 down after sixteen ends. Bowral started well with a three and a single to close to within two shots, but Taralga grabbed the last three ends and rounded out the win for the rink at 24 – 17. So, the competition point for rink 4 went to the home team who closed things down impressively.

In the last game, Peter Flight, Barb Wainberg, Dugald Braithwaite (sub for Dave Coltman) and Alastair McGhee resumed the match looking down the barrel at 9 – 18 on the fifteenth end, and matters didn’t improve as they dropped the next three ends to be 9 – 22. They did grab a couple of singles over the last few ends, but Taralga was much too strong for them on this rink and the final score was 25 – 11.

So overall, Bowral concluded this encounter with one competition point to the nine notched up by Taralga. It’s never easy at Taralga against some fine blokes who are top notch bowlers.

Grade Seven

The round 2 encounter against Camden’s Men’s recommenced at 1.30 under much kinder weather than that which had caused the match to be postponed the previous Saturday.

Resuming on rink 8 after ten ends at 5 – 14 behind, Arnie Lenczuk, Richard Denman, Mick Flynn  and Gordon Lewis scored a couple of doubles to be up and running. However, they dropped six shots over the next four ends, but they did fight back with a four and a double to have a sniff at 15 – 20 with three to play. And although they grabbed a three shotter on the last they fell short by four shots at 18 – 22. A loss, but a fine fight back by Bowral to get some shots on the ‘big board’.

On rink 9 after ten ends the score had been 9 – 11 against the Bowral four of Ted McPhee, Clive Neutze, Reta South and Bob Edwards, but on resumption, Bowral snatched a juicy five shotter straight up and four ends later, were 21 – 11 to the good! What a wonderful restart to this match with Bob cracking that gentle whip! With Ted and Clive getting shots in the head and Reta and Bob cleaning up, Bowral stormed away from the Camden outfit and notched up a very meritorious victory at 30 – 16. Great stuff!

In the game on rink 10, play for Chris Forrester, Ricci Wilson, Terry Norwood and Robin Staples resumed at 8 – 5 to Bowral on the ninth end, and singles to both sides got things under way. Bowral advanced to 11 – 6 after twelve, and then 14 – 9 after fifteen. It was then that Camden worked some magic, and with a four shotter on the nineteenth, hit the lead for the first time, and consolidated with a single; 17 – 15 to Camden. Down two shots on the last, the Camden skip shifted the jack to reduce the advantage to one shot, but with the last bowl of the match, Robin drew a beauty to the jack to notch up a double! Great bowl skip!! With the final score 17 all, half a competition point was awarded to each team!

So, the final points tally for the match was 8.5 points to Bowral and 1.5 to Camden Men’s, and this meant that Bowral went to the top of the competition ladder after the three rounds. It’s very early days, but it’s better to be in front than behind!
