BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY MARCH 18th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Irrestible morsels of info to fatten your day:
- The pennant competitions continue on Saturday March 21st, with Grade Six at home to Picton and Grade Seven visiting Camden RSL. Grade Six will be looking to get back into the winners circle, while Grade Seven are aiming to consolidate their position at the top of the section ladder. Bowl well!!
- Bowlers who are smokers are asked to keep to the allocated areas when you light up. We continue to get complaints from non-smokers that there is an issue, so we remind you again to keep to the rules.
- The Men’s Bowling Committee has been approached by the executive of the Women’s Bowling Committee to discuss working together co-operatively, and we have agreed. No date has yet been set to start the chat, but hopefully that will be soon. We will keep the Men’s group informed of any developments.
- Committee member Ian Duncan still has a few items of the ‘old red’ club uniform for sale at gift prices for anyone interested in a souvenir or casual ware.
- And social bowlers, if you would prefer to play over 18 ends instead of the usual 21, you are reminded to write ’18’ beside your name on the sign-on sheet, or let us know as part of your phone message. The Match Committee will make up a game if there are enough of you.
Wednesday Social Bowls
On a rather gloomy afternoon, the Match Committee sent onto the Waratah Green four games of triples (one with swing bowler), and two pairs. Despite some short bursts of misty drizzle, all games made it through to twenty-one ends quite comfortably.
On rink 8, Barry Werfel, Richard ‘svelte’ Denman and the wily Bob Edwards made a very slow start against Arnie ‘dickie knee’ Lenczuk, Neil Puckeridge and Dave Charlesworth to be 1 – 8 down after six ends. The score became 3 – 18 when Dave’s trio cracked a five shotter on the twelfth, and Bob’s lot were in desperate need of oxygen! And when it was 23 – 4, the ambo was put on speed dial! However, Bob’s team finally found something to win four of the last six ends and reach double figures. The final score was 26 – 13 to team Charlesworth.
In the next game, with Peter Flight was swing lead for Mick Fisher and Ross ‘trim’ Barber on the one hand and the Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees/Mick Flynn combo on the other, the Ross led group charged from the blocks to lead 14 – 3 after seven ends. The M. Flynn trio grabbed a four on the next end, but, 22 – 10 down on the thirteenth, were searching for the smelling salts! Unrelenting, Barber, Fisher and Flight shared the final eight ends and reached the clubhouse 30 – 19 to the good.
In a pairs game on rink 10, Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow and Chris ‘Tooheys old’ Forrester led 3 – 1 after three ends, but were then 3 – 7 after eight against Barb Wainberg and Robin ‘maestro’ Staples. However, Mark and Chris suddenly hit their straps, and by the fourteenth end led 13 – 8. The maestro then cracked the whip and by the nineteenth it was 17 all and all to play for. And then a four shotter to Barb and Robin sealed the deal, and they made it to the Club 21 – 18 victors. Cracking game!
In the triples on rink 11, Ian Duncan, gentleman Don Chapman and the evergreen Gordon Lewis monstered Charles Coode, Graham Hartnup and Joe ‘rusty nail’ O’Donnell with a five shotter on the third end to lead 7 – 0, and then advanced the score to 15 -4 after twelve. ‘Ambo’ on speed dial on this rink too apparently!! Nothing seemed to work for Joe’s trio as the Lewis train continued the charge. When the twenty-one ends were done, the victory was huge at 29 – 8! Ouch!!
In the final match, Alex Christlo, Shane Harvey and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie made a comfortable start to lead 4 – 2 after six ends against Wal Markow, Paul McInerney and John ‘junior’ Cummins. This became 6 – 4 after eight, and then a run of five consecutive ends made it 13 – 4 and again the smelling salts were in danger of running out. After seventeen ends the score was 17 – 5, but junior’s trio grabbed a few ends in the dying stages to make it to double figures . . . just!! The final score was 18 – 11.
