BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY JUNE 24th

BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY JUNE 24th          (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some odds and ends to get us started:

  1. For those who haven’t yet heard, Peter Cornwell, former member of the BBC, passed away last Saturday in hospital after having a heart attack on the Friday. Funeral details will be posted when they come to hand. RIP Peter.
  2. Members are notified that annual fees are now due and can be paid at the Club over the bar. A simple form needs to be completed as part of the process and these forms are available from bar staff. The fee this year for bowlers is $125, a reduction achieved by the Men’s Bowling Committee Executive given the sponsorship the Committee has managed to attract. This is a substantial saving due to the hard work of Ian Duncan in chasing sponsors.
  3. Bowlers are reminded that the AGM of the Men’s Bowling Committee will be held on Saturday August 8th so get that date in your diaries gents. You might also spend some time having a think about who you think should be running the Committee for the following twelve months. All positions are open for re-election.
  4. The Canterbury Leagues Social Travelling Bowlers will be visiting the BBC on Sunday July 12th to have a bowl and then lunch, and they are hoping that Bowral bowlers will be able to join them. Roll off is at 10am followed by lunch at 1.00. The cost is $40 which covers green fees and lunch. You can indicate your availability by entering your name on the schedule posted on the notice board.
  5. The 65 and over competition continues on Saturday with the playing of the remaining five matches in the round of 16. There should be some good viewing for any interested spectators, as there was last Saturday with a good crowd watching Graham Hartnup come from behind to snatch the final game.

Wednesday Social Bowls

Thirty-two bowlers enjoyed the perfect winter afternoon on Wednesday to test their skills on the slick surface of the Waratah Green. The Match Committee organised two games of pairs and four of triples.

On rink 7, Ross ‘snip’ Barber and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze dropped a three on the first end against Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt and Neil ‘rowdy’ Puckeridge, but then took four of the next five ends to lead 9 – 4. However, Graham and Neil then found their range and by the tenth had levelled the scores at 11 all. With plenty of chat and some high standard bowls, the score moved to 14 all, and then the Hunt/Puckeridge combo slipped out to 21 – 14. Not done, Ross and Clive stormed back to grab a one shot lead with two ends to play. In a real cliff-hanger, Graham and Neil then hung in to snaffle a couple of singles and victory at 23 – 22. Great stuff!! Some great bowls in this one especially from Neil and Ross.

On the next rink, Graham ‘dragon’ Denman, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and Terry Norwood opened brightly against Alex Christlo, Mark ‘rowdy’ Rundle and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn to lead 6 – 0 after four, but then slumped to be 6 – 7 three ends later! The score was then 7 all and by the tenth end 9 all, until the game exploded when team Flynn snatched a FIVE shotter on the twelfth. With Mark all over the jack and Alex not much further away, they had the opposition shaking their heads and seeking divine intervention. None on offer apparently as Mick’s team grabbed another FIVE shotter on the seventeenth and coasted home to a very comfortable 30 – 16. Ouch!!

In the triples match on rink 9, Arnold ‘dickie hammy’ Lenczuk, Ian ‘Mr Smooth’ Duncan and Peter Morales shared the opening ends against Jill ‘Hollywood’ Harwood, Col Stone and Owen Williams to be 5 all after six ends, but then it would seem they took complete control of the game winning eight of the next nine ends and setting up a huge 19 – 7 lead. However, refusing to roll over and concede, Owen’s team then found the jack, notched up six shots and were back in the game with three ends to play. Alas for them, Peter’s team then fired down the better bowls over the closing ends and made it to the clubhouse 21 – 14 winners.

Early pickings were lean when Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow, Shane Harvey and Viv ‘top’ Gear took on Peter Marshall, Mark ‘admiral’ Shelvey and Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis for the score to be 4 all after five ends. A four shotter to Viv’s team on the seventh started to get the score rolling, but by the eleventh it was back to all square at 9 apiece. A single to Gordon’s trio on the next gave no indication of the mayhem that was to follow for his team . . . two three shotters to Viv’s team were followed by a string of successful ends that had Gordon’s team floundering in their wake! And the FIVE shotter on the twentieth was the coup de grace! 28 – 12 . . . ouch!

In the other pairs game, Barb Wainberg and Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees couldn’t find the jack early against Paul McInerney and Dave Charlesworth to be 0 – 6 after three ends, but then got into stride to win five of the next six ends and closed to within a shot at 9 – 10. Paul and Dave then advanced their lead to 14 – 9 by the twelfth, only to see Barb and Denis pinch the lead three ends later. In a ding dong battle, the pairs then head-butted their way to 18 all by the nineteenth, and have it all hanging on the last two ends. And then cyclone Barb/Denis struck creating havoc with a SIX shotter, and passage to victory. Wow, 26 – 18 was the final score!

In the final game, Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and the maestro Robin Staples blasted from the blocks against the stunned trio of Graham Hartnup, Russell Dunstan and the wily Bob Edwards to lead 10 – 0 after three ends. However, Bob’s trio, with Russell starting to fire, found the jack on the next couple of ends, and by the seventh, it was 11 – 5 to team Staples. This became 15 – 5, but by the twelfth, Bob’s trio had clawed the deficit back to 15 – 9. However, a four shotter then to Robin’s team saw them well and truly with the upper hand, and the maestro was never going to let his grip loosen. Team Staples then went on to grind out the final ends for a solid victory at 27 – 13.
