BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY JUNE 20th           (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Some bits and bobs to open with:

  1. It is with great sadness that we note the death of Peter Cornwell a former member of the BBC. He had been a member of BBC for a number of years until he transferred to Camden a few years ago. Peter passed away on Saturday morning having suffered a heart attack on the Friday. He had been due to play in the Camden Club fours semi-finals on the day that he passed away. RIP Peter.
  2. The first round of the 65 and over competition was conducted on Saturday so more on that below.
  3. Both Men and Women bowlers are invited to be part of  a social day at the Bowral Club when the Canterbury Leagues Travelling Bowlers visit Bowral on Sunday 12th July. There will be approximately 40 visitors and we are hoping to fill both the Waratah and Wilson Greens with triples matches. Play will be be between 10am and 1pm when lunch will be served. $40 is the cost and it will cover green fees and lunch. Come on ladies and gents, the schedule awaiting your names is posted on the notice board!
  4. The draft minutes of the latest meeting of the Executive of the Men’s Bowling Committee are now posted on the notice board for the perusal of members.

The 65 and Over Competition

The sky was clear but a very chilly, blustery north-wester kept competitors, markers and spectators well rugged-up on Saturday afternoon for the opening matches of this popular competition. In this singles competition, it’s the first to 25 who takes home the goodies! Unfortunately, there were two forfeits for medical reasons so the Match Committee brought forward two of the second round games to have a full Waratah Green on the opening day.

Round 1 Games

On rink 7, Clive Neutze swamped the highly favoured Ash Lewis in the opening ends to lead 10 – 0 after the first five ends. Ash, having great difficulty with the fluky wind while Clive was all over the jack, did manage to get the score to 4 – 10, but was then all at sea over the next seven ends to be 4 – 21 down. In the box seat, Clive had a few forgetful ends, but still went on to a handsome victory at 25 – 15.

On the next rink, Jim Neely had the better of the first three ends against Mick Flynn to lead 6 – 2 after six, and then 10 – 3 after ten. Mick won the next two ends to put some spark into his step, but was soon under the pump at 17 – 7. Both bowlers were challenged by the wind and getting more than one bowl in tight each end was proving difficult. Mick kept plugging away, but Jim’s better consistency saw him home 25 – 11.

On rink 11, Gordon Lewis led Neil Puckeridge 5 – 1 early, but by the sixth end it was 5 all. Neil then edged to the lead only to have a determined Gordon peg him back to 10 all by the fourteenth. Just when this game looked as though it would be a real dogfight, Neil grabbed the upper hand and stormed ahead of the languishing Gordon. Handling the conditions better, Neil went on to register a 25 – 14 win.

In the last of the first round matches, Richard Denman mastered the breeze better than Robin Staples early to lead 4 – 2 and the 6 – 5 after seven ends. It was then that the maestro Robin found his line and length to take over the running. Winning ten of the next eleven ends, Robin had Richard on his knees at 22 – 7, and went on to what looked like a comfortable victory at 25 – 11. Not so comfortable according to the maestro!

Round 2 (Round of 16) Matches

On rink 9, Noel Fraser had slightly the better of the opening to lead 5 – 2 after four ends against Graham Hartnup, and then 6 – 5 after seven. Graham then evened things up on the next, only to have Noel sneak out to 13 – 8 after fourteen and then 20 – 13. Under pressure at this point, Graham then knuckled down to begin a comeback that had the score at 22 all then 23 all. In a cliffhanger, Graham then completed the comeback to take it out 25 – 23. So Graham moves into the quarter final round!

In the other round two match, Peter Marshall surprised the more favoured Peter Flight to lead 4 – 1 after four ends, and then 9 – 1 after six! However, Peter F then found somewhere near the jack, and a four shotter gave him the lead  for the first time. Not to be outdone, Peter M regained the lead at 14 – 13 and this looked as though it was going to be a tight one. Not to be however, as Peter F then knuckled down to tidy his game and pressed on to a 25 – 17 victory, and a place in the quarters!
