BBC BROADCAST SATURDAY JULY 18th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some bits and bobs to begin with:
- Members are notified that the AGM of the Men’s Bowling Club has been set down for Sunday September 6th at 11am. The date has been shifted to September from the earlier mentioned August to ensure that notice given satisfies the requirement of the Club Constitution. As required, all positions are declared vacant and nominations are called for. If nominations exceed requirements for any position, voting will be organised.
- The draft minutes of the latest meeting of the Men’s Bowling Club executive committee are now posted on the notice board for the information of members.
- The Men’s Bowling Club executive will hold a special meeting with the Club Manager Shane on Wednesday July 22nd to discuss the future maintenance of the greens. Information from this meeting will be passed on to members as soon as available.
- Members are reminded that the Women’s Bowling Club will be holding their annual Tulip Time tournament again this year and the date is Thursday September 17th. Information about this event is posted on the notice board, so, come on chaps, get organised and join in the fun.

65 and over Competition
The final of this popular event took place on Saturday on a beautiful winter afternoon. The Waratah Green was running at about 15, and there was very little wind to interfere with the bowls. Robin Staples opened safely taking the first two ends against a slightly wayward Peter Flight, but by the fifth the score was all even at 3’s. With both bowlers struggling a little with the line, they exchanged ends, Peter winning to the south and Robin to the north, until Peter won four of five ends to move ahead 16 – 9. It was then that Robin started to get the better of proceedings and clawed his way back to be on even terms at 19 all. Peter notched up a handy double on the next end, but Robin’s triple that followed put him in front 22 – 21 in what was now a real nail-biter. Each then grabbed a single for 23 – 22 to have the onlookers on the edge of their seats. On the next end, Robin rolled a long jack only to see Peter smother it and snaffle the three shots he needed for the win! So, after a very tightly fought, gripping final, Peter Flight’s name is the one flashing in victory. Congratulations!!
Saturday Social Bowls
Eighteen bowlers turned out for social bowls on this lovely afternoon so three games of triples were organised.
On rink 9, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Graham Hunt and Chris ‘remote fixer’ Forrester blitzed the opening against, Arnie ‘dickie leg’ Lenczuk, Graham Hartnup and the wily Bob Edwards to lead 12 zip after four, and then 16 – 2 after seven. Bob’s trio got the score to 16 – 7, but that was as close as they were going get all afternoon. The back half of the game was no easier, as Chris’ team smothered the jack end after end. 29 – 12 was the final score!
On rink 10, visitor Matt, Richard Denman and Ross ‘trim’ Barber won the first four ends against Barry Werfel, Ian ‘smooth’ Duncan and the evergreen Gordon Lewis to lead 4 – 0, but were shaken when they dropped NINE shots on the next two ends. Shaken maybe, but they grabbed a FIVE of their own on the next end which kick-started a huge run that had the opposition gasping. Gordon’s team did sneak some ends heading home, but singles weren’t enough and the damage was 26 – 14 to the ‘barber’.
In the final match, Charles Coode, Neil ‘rowdy’ Puckeridge and the wily Owen Williams started very slowly against Peter Marshall, Mike ‘left’ Hook and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn to be 1 – 8 after five ends, but then ran together the next five ends to lead 9 – 8. Despite dropping a double on the next, they charged ahead to lead 18 – 10 and had team Flynn on the ropes. Mick’s team snaffled a few ends late on in proceedings but Owen’s trio took the honours at 22 – 15.
Coach’s Corner No 2
Here is the role of the “second” from the Club Coach Manual. Though only from 2011 this advice may be a little dated in some areas. Once we have shown the role of all four players we will look at each position in a little more detail.
Second
Introduces the team to the opposing players.
When in a team of four the Second should have the capabilities to draw to the jack or to a position as requested by the skip.
Should be a competent “on shot” player.
Needs to be a versatile and competent player.
Keeps the score on the card provided at each end.
Checks score after each end with the opponent.
Records the progressive score on the scoreboard, at each alternate end (when playing at home).
Checks the total score at the end of game with opponent.
Note. In the Coach’s Manual the last four items above were listed under the skip’s duties. As the rules have now changed and the scoring is now done by the Second, I have listed them here.
