Wednesday Social Bowls
Thirty-nine bowlers turned out on what proved to be a very ‘fresh’ Wednesday afternoon on the Waratah Green. The forecast of a pleasant 14 were dashed by the very frigid, persistent westerly/north-westerly/south westerly/any direction breeze! Anyway, enough of the whinging! The numbers were bolstered by a re-visit from Queenslander Andy Ritchie, and also Bargo member George Hindi. The Match Committee sent out six games of triples (one with swing lead) and one of pairs.
In the pairs match on rink 5 of the Wilson Green, Paul McInerney and Ross ‘the’ Barber grabbed threes on the first two ends against Neil ‘rowdy’ Puckeridge and Mick ‘king’ Fisher but dropped the next two ends to be only one up. They advanced the score to 10 – 5 but by the ninth it was all square at tens. Ross and Paul sneaked out to 13 – 11, but then Neil and Mick won five of six ends to lead 21 – 14. And when they cracked a SIX shotter on the twentieth, they were home and hosed! It finished 27 – 17!
On rink 8 of the Waratah Green, Barry Werfel, Graham Hartnup and George Hindi snaffled the first four ends against Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Ian Duncan and Chris ‘Tooheys Old’ Forrester, but then seemed to fall into a very deep chasm, because Chris’ trio won seven of the next nine ends to scoot out to a ten shot lead at 22 – 9. Chris was having an absolute blinder of a game that had the opposition shaking their heads in wonder. George’s team did run three ends together late on, but the damage had been done, and it was 22 – 14 to team Forrester at stumps.
In the next game Grahame Denman was swing lead for Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow and Robin Staples on the one hand and Arnie ‘dickie leg’ Lenczuk and Terry Norwood on the other. With Mark in good touch early, Robin’s team had much the better of the first seven ends to lead 9 – 1, and had the opposition looking for inspiration. Team Norwood then had a small run of three ends to get to 6 – 11, but with Robin in fine touch, team Staples ground out the back half relentlessly. 19 – 7 was the final count.
On rink 10, Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone, Mike ‘left’ Hook and Bob Edwards grabbed a mouth-watering FIVE shotter on the second end against Mark Shelvey, Peter ‘QANTAS’ Flight and Peter Morales, but by the seventh end, it was all square at sevens. Another FIVE shotter to Bob’s trio kicked them ahead, and they entered the back straight 14 – 10 to the good. However, it was then that ‘QANTAS’ re-discovered his match-winning weekend form and team Morales blew the opposition away to coast home 27 – 17.
In the next game, Andy Ritchie, Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt and Denis ‘ear-basher’ Lees grabbed the first three ends against Terry ‘pep’ Salter, Richard ‘gazelle’ Denman and Mick Flynn, and then led 12 – 6 after nine. However, with Mick calling the shots, team Flynn started to find the jack and the scores were level on the twelfth. Denis’ team then edged ahead, but Mick’s trio then took over the running, putting together some very solid ends and notching up the shots. Team Lees hung in well, but Mick’s trio took the honours at 20 – 16.
On rink 12, Jill ‘Hollywood’ Harwood, Shane Harvey and Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis notched up five shots on the first two ends against Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Owen Williams and John ‘junior’ Cummins and then settled into a very dominant run. Maybe it was the cold, but team Cummins just couldn’t seem to find the jack as Gordon’s trio steam-rolled them out of the first half at 18 – 3. And, unfortunately for team Cummins, the mauling continued down the home straight . . . 28 – 8 was the final score in favour of the cobbler’s team.
In the final match, Alex Christlo, Wal Markow and Dave ‘pot black’ Charlesworth were quick out of the blocks against Peter Marshall, Don ‘gentleman’ Chapman and Joe O’Donnell to lead 7 – 2 after four ends, and a monstrous FIVE shotter on the next had them all smiles. However, Joe’s team weren’t about to surrender and they hung in tenaciously to be still in touch after fifteen ends. And then disaster struck Joe’s team!! Dave’s trio grabbed an eye-watering SIX shotter, and didn’t look back as they charged home 25 – 15 victors.
