BBC BROADCAST AUGUST 1st           (Terry Norwood at the desk)

Let’s start with some hors d’oeuvres:

1. Another reminder that the AGM of the Men’s Bowling Club will be held on Sunday September 13th at 11am. All positions on the Men’s Bowling Club Committee (president, vice president (2), treasurer, secretary, members 5) are up for election. Nominations have now opened with the forms available at the Club. A nominator and seconder are required, along with the agreement of the nominee.
2. The AGM of the BBC Ltd, the licensed Club will be held in October, and members are urged to attend that meeting to hear about the future plans for the Club.
3. Thanks to committeeman Ian Duncan, bowling members should now have received the August copy of Jack Chat to keep you abreast of bowling matters. You will have noticed that there is a ‘your say’ section now where comments of members will be aired, so let us have your opinions on issues.
4. Bowlers are reminded that entries are now open for the BBC Major Pairs Championship which will begin on Saturday August 15th. Nominations will close on Saturday August 8th so there is not a great deal of time remaining. Come on chaps, get entered and show your stuff!
5. The Pairs will be followed by the Major Singles Championship with entries opening on August 15th and closing on September 12th. So there’s another date to keep in mind bowlers.
6. Membership renewals are still trickling in so hopefully those who’ve not yet signed up will do so in the near future. The reduced figure of $125 will get members the same bowling privileges as usual, so come on fellows let’s all get out on the green.

Social Bowls Wednesday July 29th

Twenty-eight bowlers braved the chilly winter conditions to strut their stuff on the Waratah Green. The Match Committee sent out four games of triples and one of pairs.

In the pairs match on rink 8, Andy Ritchie and Chris ‘feel no cold’ Forrester trailed early against Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and the rowdy Neil Puckeridge but then hit the lead on the twelfth. Chris and Andy then dominated the run home to notch up a 27 – 19 victory.

On rink 9, Ian Duncan, Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt and the dasher Clive Neutze edged Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow, Joe O’Donnell and Mick Flynn early, but it was all square by the seventh. From there however, Clive’s team slowly got the better of team Flynn and ground out a 22 – 14 win.

In the next game, Barry Werfel, Shane Harvey and Richard ‘gazelle’ Denman struggled to win ends against Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman Paul McInerney and Peter Morales but when they did it was big . . . two FIVES and a four kept them afloat, but Peter’s team finally torpedoed them at 25 – 18.

On rink 11, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Wal Markow and wily Bob Edwards started well against Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Alex Christlo and Denis Lees and never eased back. They ground out the ends showing no mercy and expecting none in return. 23 – 11 saw smiles on the faces of Bob’s team.

In the final match, Charles ‘morse’ Coode, Graham Hartnup and the super nonagenarian Gordon Lewis had the better of the early ends against Arnie Lenczuk, John ‘junior’ Cummins and Dave Charlesworth, but when they gave up two monstrous FIVE shotters, they lost the lead . . . and the match! It ended 23 – 20!

Social Bowls Saturday August 1st

Sixteen brave (silly?!?) souls ventured into the misty rain and very cold conditions, twelve to play triples and four pairs.

On rink 8, Peter Hall, Peter ‘champ’ Flight and Dave Charlesworth gave up an eye-watering SIX on the fourth against Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow, Ian ‘smooth’ Duncan and Chris ‘bare knees’ Forrester but by the seventh were all square at 8s. They then nosed ahead by the tenth only to drop a FIVE on the thirteenth and slip seven shots behind. When they snaffled a giant SIX themselves on the seventeenth, they thought they were back in the match, but Chris’ trio immediately returned serve with a SIX of their own to snuff out the challenge. When stumps were pulled, team Forrester was coasting at 29 – 20. Chris had his usual great game, and Ian and ‘the wheel’ set things up more often than not!

In the other triples game, Graham Hartnup, Owen ‘wily’ Williams and Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis dominated the opening ends against Terry ‘pep’ Salter, visitor Peter Deutsher and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn to lead 7 – 0 after five. Gordon was having a blinder, and Graham and Owen were setting ends up nicely. However, Mick’s trio then won the next five ends although Gordon’s interventions were keeping them to singles. Team Lewis then took over the running again to lead 15 – 8 well into the back half and have the opposition under pressure. However, Mick’s team responded again, clicked into gear and started to notch up some shots . . . but, alas, it was too little too late and Gordon’s team prevailed at 16 – 14. And visitor Peter will have nightmares over the game Gordon had!!

In the pairs game on rink 9, Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt and Ross ‘just a trim’ Barber gave Arnie ‘dickie leg’ Lenczuk and Terry Norwood a bowling lesson; actually, an absolute smashing, a monstrous belting . . . a horrible hiding!!! Showing no compassion, they pulverized Lenczuk and Norwood from  go to whoa! With Graham in blistering form that would have had any bowler in the Club on the ropes and begging for mercy, and the barber only a whisker behind him with those ugly yellow bowls, they belted the opposition from pillar to post . . . and then belted them again!! And they had the audacity to enjoy it!! Embarrassed and enfeebled, Arnie and Terry’s pleas were finally heard after twenty ends and the bleeding was finally cauterized!! 28 – 9 was nightmare stuff!!
