Some odds and ends to get started:
- The AGM of the Men’s Bowling Club will be held on Sunday September 13th at 11 am. Please note the change of date . . . thanks to the members who pointed out that fathers’ day (6th) would be unlikely to be a sensible date! So, 11am on the 13th it is!
- Bowlers are reminded that the Women’s Bowling Club is running the Tulip Festival event again this year, and it’s set down for Thursday September 17th. Come on bowlers, let’s get behind this competition and make it one to remember!
- The nomination form for the Major Pairs Championship is now posted on the notice board awaiting entries. The first round is set down for Saturday August 15th with the final scheduled for September 5th. OK chaps, pair up and get your names listed.
- The Major Singles Championship will follow close on the heals of the pairs, and entries will open on August 15th and close on September 12th. So, there are some more dates for your diaries gents.
- Members of the Men’s Bowling Club are advised that nominations for the 26/27 Committee are now open. As always, all positions are open for election, so have a think about who you want to run the Men’s Club for the next twelve months.
Saturday Social Bowls
Twenty-two eager bowlers turned out for bowls on a pleasant winter afternoon, so the Match Committee sent out three games of triples and one of pairs.
In the pairs game on rink 8, Ian Duncan and the evergreen cobbler Gordon Lewis opened strongly against Charles Coode and the wily Bob Edwards to lead 6 – 2 after four ends, but by the eighth, were only one in front at 7 – 6. These pairs then went hard at each other so that by the seventeenth, it could have gone either way. And then cyclone Gordon hit . . . a massive SIX, followed immediately by a FIVE had Charles and Bob on their knees, and team Lewis finished them off at 29 – 14!
In the next game, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Peter ‘Rex’ Flight and the ebullient Chris Forrester started brilliantly against Arnie Lenczuk, Graham Hartnup and the potter Mick Flynn to lead 12 – 1 after seven ends and have team Flynn gasping for breath. With Ted all over the jack, Chris in super form and ‘Rex’ chipping in, they were determined to make life as uncomfortable for the opposition as possible . . . and they succeeded! Team Flynn hung in bravely in the run home, but the horse had bolted early on! 26 – 14 was the final score.
On rink 10, newcomer Peter Hall, Mark Barrow and the resilient Robin Staples dropped a single on the first end against Jeannie Sewell, Terry Norwood and Ross ‘just a trim’ Barber, but led 5 – 4 after six ends. In a really tight battle, Ross’ trio edged to the lead on the back of some fine shots from the skip and it was 12 – 11 after fifteen. Mark then really hit top form outpointing his opposite, and Robin was all over the jack for his team to pull ahead. And in a very tight finish, team Staples held firm and got to the Clubhouse 17 – 15 victors. Terrific game!
In the final game, Barry Werfel, Richard ‘gazelle’ Denman and Dave Charlesworth opened brilliantly with an eye-watering FIVE on the first against Peter Marshall, Neil ‘rowdy’ Puckeridge and Mick ‘king’ Fisher, and then led 7 – 0 after three. Mick’s team then found the jack, and had clawed back to within four shots by the eighth. However, with Barry in solid form, Dave’s team again asserted complete authority over the match and surged away in the back straight to drive home for an impressive 32 – 10 victory.

Role of the Skip from Club Coach Manual
Skip
Is the person in charge of the team.
Needs to have tactical and bowling skills.
Directs the players to develop the head.
Should be a capable exponent of the game.
Should have the capabilities to get the best from the team.
Should have a comprehensive knowledge of the rules.
Must display encouragement and never be critical.
Note, as mentioned in Coach’s Corner No 2 the Manual lists scoring as a skip’s job. Times have changed and it is now carried out by the second.
