Major Pairs Championship Final
A pleasant Sunday saw Ash Lewis and Al McGhee take to the green to battle Peter Flight and Bob Edwards for this prestigious title. Peter and Bob snaffled the first couple of ends and by the fifth led 6 – 2. With both outpointing their opposite, they advanced the score to 16 – 2 and had Al and Ash under quite some pressure. In full control and in very solid form, Bob and Peter ground out the ends giving nothing to Al and Ash who struggled to find their best touch. In the end, it was a crushing victory to Bob and Peter at 25 – 4.

Style . . . and style!! The Pairs Champs!!
Major Singles Championship
Bob Edwards was marker in the tussle on rink 8 where Graham Hartnup made a solid start against Oscar Whalin to lead 4 – 0 after four ends. Oscar then started to get the line in the tricky wind and by the tenth end had slipped into the lead 9 – 5. However Graham held his form and by the thirteenth had worked to a one shot lead. In a grueling battle, neither could shake off the other until Oscar put together three very solid ends and took out the game 25 – 16.
On the next rink, Terry Norwood grabbed the first two ends against Al McGhee, but by the seventh led by only a single shot 5 – 4. With some solid ends this became 11 – 4, then 15 – 7 and by the twentieth end 19 – 10. It was then that Al found some better touch and three ends later had closed to within three shots and it was game on. However, Terry held it together and three ends later had the game sewn up at 25 – 16.
On rink 10, Noel Fraser took the first three ends against Denis Lees but by the seventh the scores were locked at 5 all. Denis pushed this to 11 – 5, and then to 14 – 8 by the fourteenth and looked to be in control. Digging in, Noel closed to 13 – 15, but three ends later was in trouble with Denis well on top at 23 – 13. However, far from done, Noel won the next five ends to close to within four shots and have the game on a knife edge. And it was Denis who finally prevailed, taking the next two ends and getting home 25 – 19.
In the next game, defending champion Dugald Braithwaite took the first two ends against the veteran Gordon Lewis, and then pushed on to lead 11 – 3 after eleven ends. It was then that Gordon hit a purple patch of form winning five of the next six ends and taking a 16 – 12 lead. Head down and determined, Gordon still led 17 – 15 until he dropped a dreaded four shotter on the twenty-first end. In good touch Dugald pushed to 24 – 18 only for a determined Gordon to grab a double on the next end to keep alive. However, Dugald rounded out the victory on the next end with a single.
On rink 12, Peter Flight racked up a single on the first end against Chris Forrester but the scores were then 3 all after five. In a tight encounter in the gusty conditions, Peter edged to the lead but there was still only one shot the difference at 9 – 8. Peter then won six of the next seven ends to lead 17 – 11 and have Chris under some pressure. However, a solid run by Chris had the scores 19 all and the game a sizzler. It was Peter that held firm with some solid drawing to get him home 25 – 20.
In the final game on rink 15, Jim Neely blitzed the opening against Ash Lewis to lead 8 – 1 after four ends, but then saw Ash take seven of the next eight ends to lead 13 – 9. Jim then steadied to get within a shot, but another short run saw Ash move to 19 – 13 and shift the pressure to Jim. Quality bowler that he is, Jim responded and four ends later it was 19 all and a cliff-hanger. Former champ Ash then rose to the challenge and three ends later was home 25 – 20.
