Wednesday Social Bowls September 16th

In a pairs match on rink 8, Wal Markow and the dasher Clive Neutze dropped a four on the first end against Alex Christlo and Joe ‘rusty nail’ O’Donnell, but then went on a point scoring spree to lead 20 – 5 by the ninth! This included an eye-watering SIX which had the opposition gasping and on the ropes. However, Joe and Alex wriggled away from the ropes to take three ends, notch up double figures and have their breathing somewhere normal. Alas, the pressure returned and Wal and Clive ground the breath out of them to rack up a huge win at 37 – 14. Dasher Clive was in pretty good form in this one.

In another pairs game, Don ‘gentleman’ Chapman and Viv ‘top’ Gear were outpointed at the start by Graham Hartnup and Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees, but then took over the running to lead 12 – 6 at the eleventh. They then began the back half with a very juicy SIX shotter and kept Denis and Graham floundering as they advanced down the home straight. Whenever Graham and Denis managed to get a sniff of the jack, Don and Viv were quickly able to snuff it out. Piling on the shots, Don and Viv put the opposition to the sword with 28 – 8 the final score.

With Peter Marshall as swing lead, Ian ‘smooth’ Duncan and the evergreen Gordon Lewis matched Mark Shelvey and Bob ‘wily’ Edwards to be 6 all after five ends. Team Lewis then edged to 11 – 8 by the eighth, but Bob’s trio had levelled matters by the halfway point. Bob’s team then took over the running and kept the opposition at bay as they ticked off end after end. Seven down with one end to play, the never say die Gordon had a great last end, but it was Bob’s trio that had the bragging rights at 24 – 20.

On rink 11, Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone, Owen Williams and Terry Norwood grabbed five shots on the first two ends against Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie and Peter Flight, and were still comfortably in front 8 – 2 after six. Col was having a blinder as lead and Owen was sneaking bowls through the gaps to set ends up. However, Peter’s trio then clicked into gear to close the gap, and by the fourteenth, were only three behind at 9 – 12. In the back half, it was nip and tuck, and the gap was still three with two ends to play. In a tight finish, Terry’s trio held on to take the game at 20 – 17. All bowled well with some fine ends, while Paul was a standout in the back half constantly drawing into the head.

In the final match, Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Shane Harvey and coach extraordinaire Robin Staples opened brightly against Steve Bennett, Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt and Mick Flynn to lead 10 – 3 after eight ends. However, Mick then fired up his trio and by the fifteenth, were within one shot at 14 – 15, and it was game on. Robin’s team then slipped out to a five shot lead, but a mouth-watering FIVE to Mick’s team levelled the scores with dark creeping in and two ends to play. And it was Robin’s team that held on to take out a great win at 23 – 21. Joel had a cracking game (again!!), and Shane was also in fine form, while Graham kept chipping away for the opposition.

Coach’s Corner No 11

So going back to the first Coach’s Corner, The “role of the lead”

Second paragraph says, “Deliver jack as close as possible do a distance determined by the skip”.

Final word on jack delivery. Please do not disregard this information if you are not a lead. Any time you enter a singles competition you will require skill in delivering the jack if you are to make the most of your opportunities.

On The Manual page for jack delivery there are three coaching tips, here they are;

1. Ensure the action remains “fluent” throughout the delivery.

2. To ensure consistency, ensure the bowling arm brushes close to the side during the swing.

3. The knee of the trailing leg should ideally drop to a position near the heal of the front foot.
