Kevin was a terrific bloke and a thorough gentleman who did an enormous amount of work for bowls not only at Bowral but at the highest levels. There is no official word yet, but the understanding at this stage is that he will be farewelled in a private ceremony. VALE Kevin, RIP.
  2. The minutes, including the proposed 26/27 budget, of the latest meeting of the Men’s Bowling Committee has now been posted on the notice board. Happy reading.
  3. The Pennants competitions continue on Saturday with Grade Six at home to the ‘tigers’ from Taralga, and Grade Seven travelling to Camden to take on the ‘Rams’. Come on ladies and gents, bowl really well and notch up a couple of wins!
  4. Members are again reminded that the BBC is holding a special general meeting on Sunday April 26th at 9am to consider the changes to the Club’s constitution. Your attendance would be most helpful.

Wednesday Social Bowls

Thirty-eight bowlers turned out for social bowls on what was a perfect autumn day for bowls, very little wind and a very pleasant 20 degree temperature. The Match Committee organised two games of pairs and five of triples, with the matches scattered over the Wilson and Waratah Greens.

In a pairs match on rink 4, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and the ebullient Chris Forrester were overwhelmed early on against Arnie ‘very dickie knee’ Lenczuk and the wily Mick Flynn losing six of the first seven ends to be down 2 – 14. However, they then started to get a few bowls in the head and began to notch up a few ends. Mick and Arnie were still eight shots up after eleven ends, and had a nine shot advantage with four ends to play. And then Chris and Peter struck hard with a five shotter, and by the twentieth had reduced the deficit to a single shot. With it all to play for on the last, Mick and man of the match Arnie grabbed three shots and went to the bar four shot winners at 24 – 20. What a good one!

In a triples match on rink 5, Barb Wainberg, Neil Puckeridge and the maestro Robin Staples made a steady start against Terry ‘pep’ Salter, Ross ‘knock knock’ Barber and Terry Norwood to lead 4 – 3 after five ends. With play very tight, the score advanced to 6 – 5 after eight and then 7 all on the eleventh. With Barb and Terry having a ding-dong battle as leads, the heads continued to be fiercely fought and singles the result . . . until the fifteenth end where a great bowl from the maestro netted a four shotter and a five shot lead. The match then returned to a very close battle with the teams exchanging singles and the lead remaining five shots. It finished 16 – 11 in favour of Robin’s team!

On rink 6, Ian ‘smooth’ Duncan, Neville Tanner and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze got off the a flyer against Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt, Mike Hook and the evergreen Gordon Lewis to lead 15 – 0 after seven ends! Woo, put the ambo on speed dial!! Team Lewis then finally cracked a three shotter, but then lost the next eight ends to be down for the count at 3 – 27!! All Clive’s team were on top of their opposite number, but it was Ian, the smooth operator, who mercilessly smothered the jack end after end in a superb display of lead bowling. Team Lewis did manage to win three of the last few ends and a five shotter helped them to limp to double figures. 29 – 13 was the final score in this bruising encounter!

On rink 8, Graham ‘James’ Bond, Charles Coode and Viv ‘third’ Gear made a very strong start against Mark Shelvey, Paul McInerney and Mike Holmewood to lead 10 – 3 after five ends, and then the score became 14 – 8 after ten.  At that point Mike’s team took over the running and by the fourteenth, had surged to a lead of four shots and looked solid at 18 – 14. However, the pendulum was about to swing, and swing it did to see Viv’s team take over the running. Ends were tight but it was team Gear that kept winning the ends and the singles kept trickling in. In fact, they won ends 15 to 21, adding eight shots and getting to the Clubhouse 22 – 18 victors.

On rink 9, Mark Barrow and Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees made a safe opening against Shane Harvey and Richard ‘gazelle’ Denman to be 3 – 5 after the first four ends, but then went on a rampage winning the next nine ends on the trot to lead 22 – 5! Smelling salts and oxygen to rink 9 please!! Mark ‘the wheel’ was having an absolute blinder and the opposition could find few answers to his relentless assault on the jack. Shane and Richard did share the last eight ends as they valiantly hung in and a four shotter saw them into double figures. However, the accolades went to the charging Mark and Denis as they romped home 31 – 13 victors.

In the next game, Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Graham Hartnup and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie managed to edge Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Mark Rundle and Owen ‘wily’ Williams to be 5 – 4 up after five ends. However the wily one urged his team on and five ends later they held a two shot advantage at 14 – 12. The score then became 14 all on the twelfth end and it looked as though this game was going right down to the wire. Owen’s team then edged out to a two shot lead, and on the sixteenth was still in front by two. However, in a last ditch revival, team Rubie smothered the opposition in the run to the wire and closed out the match 21 – 18 victors. What a good one!

In the final match on rink 11, Clive Hutchens, Wal Markow and Don ‘gentleman’ Chapman hit their straps immediately against Peter ‘senior’ Marshall, Alex Christlo and Dave Charlesworth to lead 6 – 1 after three ends, but then fell into a deep chasm on the fourth when they dropped a monstrous EIGHT shotter on the fourth!! Wow . . . ouch!! The recovery was immediate however, as Don’s trio notched up singles on the next three ends to be level at 9 all. Dave’s team then won the next two ends, but from there it was all team Chapman. They dropped only two ends as they stormed ahead leaving Dave’s trio floundering in their wake. 28 – 17 was the final score.
