BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY APRIL 8th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some bits and pieces to begin with:
- The Pennants competitions resume this Saturday April 11th with Grade Six travelling to Camden and Grade Seven playing host to Robertson. Bowl well ladies and gents and chalk up a couple of victories.
- The latest meeting of the Executive of the Men’s Bowling committee was at 10am on April 8th and the draft minutes from the meeting should be posted on the notice board by the weekend.
- Apparently smoking continues to be a problem and we again ask that smokers keep to the assigned areas when lighting up.
- Committee members Ian Duncan and Terry Norwood attended the meeting of the BBC Board on March 24th to present the Men’s Bowling Club draft budget for 26/27, and this was endorsed. A copy of this draft document will be attached to the minutes when they are posted on the notice board.
- Members are reminded that there is a special general meeting of the BBC Club Ltd set down for 9am Sunday April 26 to consider changes to the Club’s constitution.
- Ian Duncan’s hard work on chasing up sponsorship might have another business interested in becoming a sponsor, and we wish Ian and manager Shane good fortune in upcoming discussions. In the meantime, we ask members to keep mentioning ‘The Centre for Hearing’ as a sponsor to all and sundry!
- The month of May will see the BBC Major Triples Championship staged so it’s time for bowlers to start to think about organising themselves for that. The nomination schedule for that event will be posted on the notice board on the 11th of April, so get cracking bowlers and get your teams set up.
Wednesday Social Bowls
Thirty-eight eager bowlers fronted for social bowls on what was a beautiful autumn afternoon at the Bowral Bowling Club. The Match Committee organised two games of pairs, which were assigned to the Wilson Green, and five games of triples which were sent out onto the Waratah Green.
In the first of the pairs matches, Barb Wainberg and Mick Fisher made a slow start against Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow and Dave Charlesworth to be 2 – 6 after four ends, but were all square two ends later. The scores became 7 all and then 8 all by the tenth as neither could break away from the other. However, Barb and Mick won four of the first five ends in the back half to edge out to 13 – 10, but by the twentieth it was 14 all and everything to play for on the last. And it was Barb and Mick who prevailed with a double for 16 – 14 . . . what a great game!
In the other pairs match on rink 6, Mike ‘fish’ Hook and Clive Neutze opened brightly against Charles ‘morse’ Coode and Mick Flynn to lead 9 – 5 after seven ends, and by the twelfth led 15 – 6. Under pressure, Charles and Mick rallied to turn the game around winning four of five ends, including a four shotter and a mighty six shotter, to take a two shot lead. Unfortunately for Charles and Mick their run then fizzled as Clive and Mike regained the ascendency, grabbed three of the final ends and slid home 22 – 19.
On rink 8 of the Waratah Green, Alex Christlo, Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt and the ebullient Chris Forrester got off to a flier against Wal Markow, gentleman Don Chapman and the wily Bob Edwards to lead 8 – 3 after seven ends. Snaffling mostly singles, they then advanced the score to 14 – 7 by the thirteenth, only to see Bob’s trio fight back and reduce the deficit to five shots with three ends to play. However, Chris’ team held firm and although they dropped a four shotter on the last, they made it to the clubhouse 21 – 15 to the good. Didn’t that Tooheys Old taste good!!
On the next rink, Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Neil Puckeridge and John ‘junior’ Cummins were all square at 5’s after four ends against Peter Marshall, Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie and Viv ‘top’ Gear. Junior’s team then led 10 – 8 after eight ends, only to see the opposition settle into a winning rhythm to win six of the next seven ends and lead 19 – 11. Junior’s trio did get the score to 14 – 19, but a four shotter to team Gear on the twentieth put paid to their run. The final score was 25 – 16 to Peter, Paul and Viv.
On rink 10, Mark Shelvey, Ian Duncan and Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees made a solid opening against Graham ‘dragon’ Denman, Graham Hartnup and Terry Norwood to lead 6 – 3 after six ends. With skip Denis drawing really well and Ian and Mark chipping in when needed, the trio advanced the score to 13 – 5 by the twelfth and had the opposition under pressure. And then a break-through came with the Norwood trio all lifting form to take the next six ends and hold a 17 – 13 lead. However, Denis rallied his team to square the match 18 all by the twenty-first, and then snatch victory on the extra end. A great win! Who suggested playing an extra end!?!
In the next game, Arnie ‘gone in the fetlock’ Lenczuk, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and the evergreen Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis burst from the blocks to lead 7 – 1 after six ends against Terry ‘pep’ Salter, Mark Rundle and the maestro Robin Staples. They then pushed the score out 13 – 4 before Robin’s team finally had a solid run to square the game on the sixteenth at 15’s. However, team Lewis struck back immediately with a five shotter and then navigated their way to victory at 24 – 18.
Not far into the final game, Col Stone had to withdraw and Jill Harwood, Richard Denman Mike Holmewood, Shane Harvey and Owen Williams continued with an improvised format to ensure that a game was had. The game produced an interesting score-line with a margin of 34 shots, which, as luck would have it, was the winning number to take out the jackpot. What a fitting outcome for playing through a disrupted match!!
