BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY MARCH 25th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some hors d’oeuvres to begin with:
- On Tuesday March 24th, Men’s Bowling Club committee members Ian Duncan and Terry Norwood attended the meeting of the Board of the BBC Ltd to present a draft budget for the 26/27 financial year. The Board was very supportive of the Men’s Bowling Club plans and accepted the draft budget. For information, this draft document will be included in the minutes of the next committee meeting which is set down for April 8th.
- Pennants competition matches continue this coming weekend when Grade Six plays host to Bundanoon, and Grade Seven travels to Campbelltown. Grade Six bowlers are looking for a repeat of the good form of last weekend to continue on their winning way, while Grade Seven is looking to adjust to the grass more quickly than they did at Camden RSL. Heads down and bowl well ladies and gents.
- Smokers are reminded to keep to the designated areas when you light up so that nonsmokers are able to have smoke-free access to the greens.
- The Men’s Bowling Committee has been approached by the Women’s Bowling Committee to discuss working together co-operatively and we have agreed. No date has yet been set for any meeting but members will be kept informed of any developments.
- And special praise must be heaped on Richard ‘bowling pin’ Denman who prevented disaster during pennants on the Waratah Green when he darted like a startled gazelle to scoop up an errant bowl that was headed to the adjacent rink at some pace! It was a brilliant interception Richard ‘gazelle’ Denman!
Wednesday Social Bowls
Thirty-four eager bowlers fronted for social bowls on what was a perfect Wednesday afternoon for bowling. Members were able to welcome Forster bowler Dan Hendrie who is currently holidaying in the Southern Highlands and who demonstrated he knew what bowls was all about. The Match Committee assigned three of the six matches to the Wilson Green so that some of the pennants bowlers could tune up for the visit to Campbelltown, while the other games were assigned to the Waratah Green.
In a pairs game on rink 6 of the Wilson Green, Terry Salter and Chris ‘Toohey’s Old’ Forrester were very slow out of the blocks against Barb Wainberg and Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight to trail 0 – 9 after four ends! However, Chris and Terry finally adjusted to the grass, and when they notched up a four on the eleventh, they had reduced the deficit to 10 – 12. That became 10 – 13, but a run of four consecutive ends, including a five shotter, put Chris and Terry well in front at 20 – 13. Over the last five ends, singles were all that either team could muster and the final score was an impressive 24 – 14 to Terry and Chris.

Chris led the comeback to an impressive victory!
On rink 5, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt and the maestro Robin Staples jumped from the blocks against Arnie ‘dickie knee’ Lenczuk, Ian Duncan and Ross ‘tiny’ Barber winning four of the opening five ends to lead 12 – 3. With Arnie then finding great touch, Ross’ trio grabbed three of the next four ends so that they had moved to within two shots . . . and it was game on! Well almost, because a massive SIX shotter to Robin and his men put them 21 – 12 to the good and they were sitting pretty. Not for long though, because team Barber then won five of the next six ends to claw to within two shots. However, in a very tight finish, the maestro’s trio snaffled singles on the last three ends and made it home 25 – 20!

Arnie was the bowler of the game against some tough opponents!
In the other game on the grass, Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie, Terry Norwood and John ‘junior’ Cummins were at sixes and sevens in the opening ends against Shane Harvey, Ian ‘rowdy’ Lees and Richard ‘gazelle’ Denman to trail 1 – 7 after four ends! However, a four shotter on the next end removed the frowns, and by the eleventh end they were only a shot behind at 11 – 12. Richard’s trio notched up a single on the twelfth, but then junior’s team dominated proceedings in the run to the line. Junior himself had a blinder, several times frustrating the opposition with his last bowl to sneak the shot when all looked lost. Richard also put down some end-changing bowls, but to little avail as team Cummins finished with the bragging rights at 23 – 14!

‘junior’ Cummins was in hot form rescuing his team repeatedly!
On rink 7 of the Waratah Green, Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Neil Puckeridge and the wily Bob Edwards opened very strongly against Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow, Mark Rundle and Viv ‘first’ Gear to lead 9 – 1 after seven ends. Much to their relief, Viv’s trio grabbed a four shotter on the eighth, but then drop nine shots over the following four ends and trail 18 – 5. Whoo, where were the smelling salts? However, rather than run up the white flag, Viv and his boys dug in and battled hard. They won four of the last six ends, crossed the double figure threshold and managed to reduce the deficit. The final score in favour of Bob’s team was 21 – 11.
In the next game, Alex Christlo, Barry Werfel and Owen ‘wily’ Williams monstered Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone, Charles ‘morse’ Coode and Dave Charlesworth over the early ends to lead 15 – 2 after six! Time to put the ambo on speed dial perhaps . . . well no, there’s always a second half to each game! Anyway, team Williams continued on its merry way, and a four shotter on the ninth put them 19 – 7 to the good. And then the cyclone struck and the game was flipped on its head! From that point, Dave’s trio won the next eleven ends on the trot, charging through the back half and leaving their hapless opponents in their wake. Owen’s team did win the last end, but Dave’s team were safely home at 26 – 21!
In the final match on rink 9, Wal Markow, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and Peter ‘miraculous’ Morales snaffled a single on the first end but were then behind 1 – 6 after five against Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, visitor Dan Hendrie and the evergreen Gordon Lewis. With both sides notching up some multiple scores, the score moved to 7 – 10 after ten, and then Gordon’s team really began to get the better of the opposition to run together six consecutive ends and push the score out to 25 – 7! Hanging in by a thread, Peter’s team won three of the last five ends, but it was Gordon’s trio that was all smiles to finish at 29 – 11.
