BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY APRIL 1st (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some juicy tit-bits to start with:
- Round 5 of the pennants season was completed last Saturday when Grade Six hosted Bundanoon and Grade Seven ventured to Campbelltown to take on the ‘Ghosts’. More on those events below.
- The Board of the BBC will conduct a Special General Meeting at 9am on Sunday April 26th to place before the membership proposed changes to the Constitution. Manager Shane has copies of the proposed new constitution for any member to view prior to the meeting.
- With the coming weekend being Easter, the question of social bowls was put to the thirty-four bowlers who were in attendance on the 1st and, because there were very few interested, it was decided that there would be no official social bowls on Easter Saturday. The Club opens at 12 noon for any patrons wishing to attend.
- Smokers are again reminded to keep to the designated areas when lighting up so that the non-smokers are able to have a smoke-free area on the green.
- The next meeting of the executive of the Men’s Bowling Committee will be held at 10am on Wednesday April 8th. The draft minutes will be posted on the notice board a few days following.
- The Men’s Bowling Committee is still waiting on advice from the Women’s Bowling Committee about a time and agenda for discussion to attend to working more closely together. Members will be kept apprised of any progress.
Pennants Bowling Saturday March 29th
Grade Six
Saturday saw Bowral host the bowlers from Bundanoon and the teams took to the Wilson Green.
In the first game, Noel Fraser, Jim Neely, Oscar Whalin and Ash Lewis made a solid start to be 6 all after five ends. From there, Bundanoon won five of the next six ends to push their lead out to 17 – 7 and were clearly on top. The back half of the game wasn’t any better for the Bowral four as Bundy kept racking up the shots. In a very solid victory, Bundanoon finished the twenty-one ends huge winners at 28 – 11.
On rink 3, Barb Wainberg, Peter Flight, Dave Coltman and Al McGhee won four of the opening five ends to lead 5 – 1, but then dropped a five shotter on the sixth. Bundy then won four of the next five ends to have Bowral under pressure at 14 – 6. In the back half, Bundy held the better form and a couple of four shotters kept them well in front. Heading home, Bowral could manage only singles to finish fourteen shots down at 25 – 11.
In the third match, Mick Fisher, Dennis Beatty, Peter Martin and Dugald Braithwaite trailed 3 – 5 after three ends but then won the next thirteen ends on the trot to hold a massive lead of 36 – 5! What a stunning run! To their credit, the Bundanoon bowlers got their heads down and started to get the better of their Bowral counterparts. However, the lead was too great and Bowral romped home to the tune of 36 – 14.
Overall, it was not a good day for Bowral, with the home team collecting a single competition point to the 9 notched up by Bundanoon. Congratulations to the Bundy bowlers though who were clearly better on the day.
Grade Seven
The Grade Seven bowlers ventured to Campbelltown to take on the ‘Ghosts’ on their fairly recently renovated greens. Nobody could complain about the green as it played very truly, and despite substantial overnight rain, ran at a good pace.
In the first game, Arnie Lenczuk, Richard Denman, Ross Barber and Gordon Lewis made a very solid start to lead 9 – 3 after seven ends. They then won five of the next eight ends to lead 15 – 9 and they looked to be more than holding their own. The score became 16 – 10 at the seventeenth, but Bowral then dropped eight shots on the next three ends to some very good bowling by the home team, and so trailed by two. Unfortunately for Bowral, they could manage only a single on the last and so went down 17 – 18.
In the next game, Graham Hunt, Ian Duncan, Terry Norwood and Robin Staples opened brightly to lead 12 – 3 after six ends, but by the tenth, Campbelltown had closed to within two shots. By the thirteenth, Bowral still led by two only for the ‘ghosts’ to take the lead with a three on the next end. However, with skip Robin in good touch, Bowral won four of the next five ends to get to the front and lead by five with two ends to play. Under pressure, Bowral held on to win by a single shot at 21 – 20.
In the final match, Terry Salter, Clive Neutze, Reta South and Bob Edwards were under the pump from the outset to be down 1 – 7 after four ends. Things didn’t improve, and the score became 1 – 16 after nine and the situation looked very grim. Bowral did move the score to 5 – 18 by the thirteenth, but shortly after this became 6 – 27. All Campbelltown bowlers remained on top of their Bowral opponent, and the ‘ghosts’ ran out massive victors at 30 – 10.
So, it wasn’t a great day for Bowral with only 1 competition point from the encounter to the 9 for Campbelltown.
Wednesday Social Bowls
A beautiful autumn day greeted the thirty-four bowlers who turned out for social bowls on April fool’s day. The Match Committee organised five games of triples and one of pairs and all games were allocated to the Waratah Green.
On rink 8, Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Neville Tanner and the wily Owen Williams opened brightly against Graham ‘James’ Bond, Don Chapman and Gordon ‘cobblers’ Lewis to lead 6 – 3 after seven ends, and they were still in front 8 -7 at the halfway point. However, the back half was a different story as team Lewis allowed them only two singles and roared home to a twelve shot victory at 22 – 10. Never underestimate the very competitive ‘cobbler’ Lewis!
On the next rink, Barry Werfel, Mark ‘rowdy’ Rundle and Dave Charlesworth (fresh from his weekend triumph in the Mackay Motors Challenge!) started impressively against Alex Christlo, Wal Markow and Bob ‘wily’ Edwards to lead 7 – 2 after six ends, but were only a shot in front at 10 – 9 after ten. This became 13 – 9, then 13 – 12 and then 14 – 13 as neither side could shake the other off. The game went down to the wire with Dave’s team triumphing by a single shot at 18 – 17. What a beauty!
On rink 10, Graham Hartnup, Paul McInerney and Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie made a very slow start against Mark Shelvey, Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt and Peter Morales to be 2 – 8 after eight ends. This became 4 – 14 at the halfway point and when 5 – 19 on the sixteenth, it was starting to look as though the smelling salts might be needed. However, Paul’s trio grabbed seven shots over three ends to reach double figures, but then, unfortunately, capitulated with a six shotter on the last! Woe, 27 – 15 was the final score to team Morales.
In the next game, Barb Wainberg, Mike ‘fish’ Hook and Chris ‘Toohey’s Old’ Forrester were slow out of the blocks against Mark Barrow, Ross ‘tiny’ Barber and the maestro Robin Staples to trail 2 – 6 after five, but then kicked into ‘go’ mode to lead 13 – 9 after eleven. They then advanced the score to 20 – 11 to have team Staples really under pressure, who then responded to reduce the deficit to three shots. With the ‘fish’ in good form, team Forrester grabbed five shots on the next two ends and held on to win 25 – 19.
In the pairs match, Arnie ‘dickie knee’ Lenczuk and Viv ‘third’ Gear began slowly against Denis ‘noisy’ Lees and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze to be down 1 – 8 after four ends. They got the score to 5 – 8 but were then behind 7 – 15 at the halfway point and looking for inspiration. Unfortunately, it was misfortune rather then inspiration that arrived as Arnie’s dickie knee became even dickier and the calls of ‘rosie’ became more anguished! Unfortunately, eighteen ends were all that the knee could take, so Arnie and Viv surrendered at 23 – 12.
In the final game on rink 15, Terry ‘pep’ Salter, Neil Puckeridge and Terry Norwood made a solid start to lead Grahame Denman, Richard ‘gazelle’ Denman and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn 6 – 3 after six ends. With Terry hitting his straps as lead, they advanced the lead to 17 – 6 on the eleventh before cracking a seven shotter on the next end! Unfortunately for team Flynn, the opposition then kept peppering the jack and the deficit kept mounting. All team Norwood bowled well, with Neil, in particular, putting down many fine draws. The final score was 40 – 9.
