Wednesday Social Bowls

Thirty-four bowlers turned out for a roll on a fine, coolish afternoon and it was good to see Dennis Beatty amongst the numbers after a long absence. The Match Committee organised five games of triples and one of pairs, and, as you’ll see below, did not manage a great job of getting the matches relatively even!! Oh well, c’est la vie!!

On rink 7 of the Waratah Green, Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Shane Harvey and Chris ‘driver’ Forrester were somewhat overwhelmed early by Col Stone, Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie and the wily Owen Williams to be 1 – 12 down after six ends, and then 3 – 17 after ten! Whoa, time to reach for the oxygen . . . or a Tooheys Old! Whichever it was did the trick because Chris’ trio grabbed a mouth-watering FIVE shotter on the next end and looked to have found their touch. But, splutter phzzz . . . the steam leaked from the comeback and Owen’s team hammered them in the run home to the tune of 34 – 11! Ouch!!

In the pairs match, Mark ‘rowdy’ Rundle and Arnie ‘dickie hamstring’ Lenczuk got the early jump on Neil Puckeridge and Dennis Beatty to lead 7 – 0 after five ends and feel as though they had the wind in their sails. However, Neil and Dennis seemed to have steadied the ship with five shots on the next two ends, only to trail by five shots at the close of the tenth end. Getting much the better of what were tight ends, Mark and Arnie ground out the shots winning ends twelve through sixteen and stretching their lead. When time was called, they were 18 – 8 to the good and feeling quite chuffed!

On rink 9, Terry ‘pep’ Salter, Russell Dunstan and Robin ‘maestro’ Staples got off to a flyer against Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Charles Coode and Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees to lead 7 – 0 after three ends, and then 12 – 4 after seven. It was then that Denis showed his guile for his trio to snaffle four of the next five ends and reduce to deficit to 5 shots. However, with Terry then all over the jack and Russell edging his opposite, and of course the maestro making his presence felt, team Staples took over the running and blitzed the opposition in the run to the line! In an impressive display, they made it to the clubhouse 29 – 11.

In the match on rink 10, Barb Wainberg, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and the wily leftie Bob Edwards were under the pump from the outset against Ian ‘smooth’ Duncan, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and Terry Norwood to be 0 – 10 after five ends and trying to cadge some smelling salts from rink 7! They must have grabbed something, because they found some form, and four ends later were only three shots behind and breathing fire. However Ian, who was having a blinder, continued to pepper the jack along with Peter, making the task difficult for the very plucky team Edwards. With bowls in the head, team Norwood stretched the lead in the back straight and finished 24 – 12  to the good.

In the next game, Peter Marshall, Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt and the ‘rusty nail’ Joe O’Donnell bounced from the blocks against Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow, Jill ‘Hollywood’ Harwood and the evergreen cobbler Gordon Lewis to be 7 – 3 up after five ends and then 10 – 4 after seven. Peter was having a fine game as lead, while Mark, Jill and Gordon were all struggling to find the jack. Joe’s team remained on top into the back half of the match and team Lewis was still 13 shots down with four ends to play. Not about to wave the white flag, Gordon’s trio grabbed three of those ends and, to their relief, managed to reduce the deficit to a single figure. The final score was 25 – 16!

In the final game on rink 15, Alex Christlo, Graham Hartnup and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze were matched early on by Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Barry Werfel and Craig Babic to be 5 all after six ends, but then won six of the next eight ends to be 14 – 8 to the good. Alex was swinging those ‘blacks’ of his in tight and Graham was following him to the jack. However, tsunami Babic then struck resulting in a monumental SIX shotter and in a blink the scores were level at 14 all!! Wow, take that! Well, Clive’s team did take that, took the next two ends to steady the ship, and when they cracked a three on the nineteenth, they led by four. Craig’s trio hung in to the end but were unable to reduce the lead and the final score was 21 – 17 in a beauty.
