Pennants
Grade Seven
Unfortunately, Campbelltown was unable to field a team for the final round of the season and so forfeited to Bowral handing us the 1o competition points. In other games in round 10, Camden RSL managed to scrape home by 1 shot against Camden Men’s and so finished at the top of the section 7.2 ladder and will move on the the finals against other section winners. In its game against Picton, Robertson got home despite dropping two rinks, and so finished in second position and relegating Bowral to third. We extend congratulations to Camden RSL and Robbo on having fine seasons.
Grade Six
Bowral travelled to Bundanoon to take on the locals in a shootout for second spot on the ladder behind runaway section 6.2 winners Taralga.
On rink 3 of the Bundy green, Mick Fisher, Dennis Beatty, Peter Martin and Dugald Braithwaite grabbed a three on the first end only to find themselves 3 – 8 down after five ends. However, Bowral then launched an assault to win eight of the next nine ends and charge to a 17 – 10 lead. Things tightened when Bundy won the next four ends, but Dugald’s team held firm and ended on top at 20 – 17.
On the next rink, Tisi Lear, Peter Flight, Dave Coltman and Al McGhee were slow out of the blocks to be 2 – 10 down after the first seven ends, but won the next two ends to steady matters. However, Bundy then pushed the lead to 15 – 6, before Bowral ran four ends together to close the gap to four. Bowral hung in the battle but struggled to close the gap and finally went under by two at 17 – 19.
In the third game, Noel Fraser, Jim Neely, Oscar Whalin and Ash Lewis were matched at the start to be 5 all after seven ends, and then took the lead to be 9 – 8 after eleven. With shots hard to come by, Bundy took a one shot lead, then Bowral did the same. The ding-dong battle meant that the scores were still locked after the nineteenth, and it was then that Bowral struck! A five shotter on the twentieth set up the win, and they rounded things off 19 – 13.
Overall then, it was a great day for the Bowral team which claimed 9 competition points to the 1 point for Bundanoon and so finished the season in second position. Taralga was always going to be a very tough side to top, so second to the Tigers is not a bad finish.
Saturday Social Bowls
Sixteen bowlers faced the starters gun on what was a very pleasant afternoon for bowls. Two games of triples and one of pairs headed out onto the Waratah Green.
In two-bowl triples on rink 8, Peter Marshall, Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt and the cobbler Gordon Lewis trailed 1 – 3 after three ends against Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Chris Forrester and Robin ‘Maestro’ Staples but nabbed a four on the next to grab the lead. They then momentarily slipped behind, but a fine run had them 13 – 9 to the good after eleven. With the cobbler in red hot form and the ‘leaning tower’ chipping in, team Lewis then stormed through the next seven ends to hold a commanding 23 – 11 lead. Ah, but never write off the maestro and his off-siders . . . they won the next end . . . and the next . . . and kept notching up the shots, so that a single on the last grabbed them a draw at 23 all!! What a beauty, and the banter after the match was something to behold!!
In another triples match on rink 9, this time three-bowls, Barry Werfel, Neil Partridge and the wily Bob Edwards made a frightfully slow start dropping the first five ends against Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow, Graham Hartnup and Mick ‘potters’ Flynn to be nine shots down, but then totted up singles on the next five ends to get themselves on the scorecard. However, with Mick barking orders and seeking much info on each end, team Flynn won the next six ends to hold a very commanding lead of 23 – 5. Although under pressure, Bob’s team was never going to run up the white flag, and they hung in to win four of the final five ends and put respectability into the final score of 24 – 12.
In a 2-4-2 pairs match on rink 10, Ian ‘smooth’ Duncan and Craig Babic won three of the first five ends to be 4 – 2 leaders against Terry Norwood and Arnie ‘very dickie knee’ Lenczuk, and then grabbed a four shotter to advance the lead. Arnie and Terry picked up four shots over the next three ends but surrendered an horrendous SIX shotter on the eleventh to be down 15 – 6 . . . not quite time for the oxygen cylinder, but getting close! Craig was having an absolute blinder, while the ‘smooth’ fellow was very solid back-up. Their dominance continued through the back half of the match as they skilfully bettered much of what Arnie and Terry could get in place. There was some excellent bowls played in this game with Craig at the forefront. 24 – 10!
