BBC BROADCAST No 1926 WEDNESDAY MAY 13th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some bits and bobs to get us underway:
- The funeral service for Lew Wilson, late Patron and life member of the BBC was held at St Jude’s today, Friday 15th. The BBC was very well represented with more than a dozen men and women members, including life member Gordon Lewis who spoke eloquently in tribute. Also in attendance was deputy chair of the BBC Board Greg Mackay who read the family eulogy.
Lew was held in very high regard at the Club as well as in the community, and will be greatly missed. We offer sincere condolences to his family and friends. RIP Lew. - The Pennants season will come to an end on Saturday with the staging of round 10. Bowral has received a message that Campbelltown has been unable to field a team in grade seven, so there will be no match on the Waratah Green on Saturday. Bowral will be allocated all 10 competition points and will have to await other results to learn whether we finish in second or third position. Grade Six will venture to Camden to round off the season and look to end the season on a winning note.
- Members should now have received an email notifying everyone of the change to arrangements for social bowls at the end of the month. The Men’s Bowling Committee has agreed to join the women on Thursday May 28th at 9.30 for social bowls and so there will be no organised bowls for men on Wednesday 27th. Hopefully, there will be a big turnout on the Thursday to make for a good day. Come on fellows, let’s see you get behind the day!
- Members are reminded that the AGM of the Men’s Bowling Club will be held on Saturday August 8th at 10.30am. As usual, all positions are open for election, so it’s time for bowlers to start to have a think about who they would like to run the Men’s Bowling Club for the following year. Nomination will not open for a while yet, but there is no harm in thinking about likely candidates.
Social Bowls Wednesday 13th May
Thirty-five bowlers turned out on a somewhat inclement afternoon to test their skills on the Waratah Green and tempt fate as far as the weather was concerned. Six games of triples were organised, one with a swing bowler although we did have a drop-in join that game for a short while; thanks Al McGhee. The weather was very much struggling to be kind, so it was not at all surprising that games had to be called off after sixteen ends.
On rink 7 of the Waratah Green, Jill ‘Hollywood’ Harwood, Ian ‘smooth’ Duncan and Viv ‘second’ Gear began very, very slowly against Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Neville Tanner and the evergreen Gordon Lewis to be 0 – 14 after seven ends . . . where were the smelling salts . . . sorry, they were in demand on rink 9 where mayhem was unfolding!! However, ‘click-clack’, the pendulum swung and Viv’s trio got hold of the jack and swung into top gear!! They won seven of the following nine ends and were on the verge of a monumental comeback when rain intervened. 16 – 11 it was to Gordon and Co after 16.
In the next game, Alex Christlo, Arnie ‘dickie knee still dickie’ Lenczuk and Chris ‘Tooheys Old’ Forrester had the better of the early ends against Graham Hartnup, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and John ‘junior’ Cummins to lead 5 – 3 after five. However, junior rarely gives the opponent any breathing space, so by the eleventh, the scorecard showed evens and it was still evens at 8 all two ends later. But . . . Chris and his boys then broke the shackles on the next two ends, gave junior the slip, and when rain forced a premature cease fire they had slipped out to 13 – 8.
On rink 9, disaster immediately struck Grahame Denman (swing), Terry Norwood and the potter Mick Flynn when they surrendered 11 shots on the first four ends to Grahame Denman, Richard ‘gazelle’ Denman and Peter Morales!! Eleven shots, including a horrible SIX!!! Four ends later, the score was 15 – 2 with Peter in blindingly good form and Terry and Mick in woe, woe, woeful form!! All but prostrate for the carrion birds to pick over, their horrible bowling continued . . . and continued . . . until the rain came to relieve their agony! Peter, you bowled brilliantly, and 20 – 8 does not indicate your superiority!!
On rink 10, Shane Harvey, Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt and Dave Charlesworth made a slow start against Russell Dunstan, Mark ‘rowdy’ Rundle and Joe ‘rusty nail’ O’Donnell to be 2 – 8 behind after five, but then found scintillating form to be 13 – 8 to the good after eight . . . what were you adding to the water Graham?! Joe’s team notched up a couple of singles but another FIVE shotter to the Charlesworth tally, followed by a three a couple of ends later, had them 21 – 12 in front. But, however, when rain spoiled things three ends later Joe’s team had grabbed four shots and there was a whiff of recovery on the breeze. For the record, it ended 21 – 16 to Dave’s trio.
In the next match, Peter ‘senior’ Marshall, Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie and Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees almost shared the opening ends against Terry ‘pep’ Salter, Neil Puckeridge and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze to be 4 – 6 after five, but then 5 – 11 after eight. It was then that Denis’ boys took over the running, winning five ends on the trot and having the opposition scratching their heads over a six shot deficit 17 – 11. The scratching didn’t do much good, however, as team Lees continued to hold their own and appeared to be in control when the heavenly moisture brought an abrupt halt. 20 – 14 it ended.
In the final game on rink 12, Graham ‘not stirred’ Bond, Craig Babic and the wily Owen Williams notched up a double on the first end against Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow, Don ‘gentleman’ Chapman and the maestro Robin Staples but found themselves under the pump at 3 – 7 after five. Undaunted though, they outpointed the others winning the next four ends and taking a two shot lead. It was then, however, that gentleman Don hit his straps and the Staples machine began to grind its way to the lead, so that when time had to be called, Robin’s team was 15 – 12 to the good. And to sweeten a wet day, this group won the jackpot! Bon chance, c’est la vie!!
