Some bits and bobs to get us started:
- The draw for the Major Pairs Championship was conducted on Saturday August 8th, so check below for the details.
- The schedule for the nominations for the Major Singles Championship will be posted on Saturday 15th, so, come on chaps, get your name on the board and enter our premium competition.
- And another reminder that the AGM of the Men’s Bowling Club will be held at 11am on September 13th and it would be great to see a strong roll-up. A date for your diaries fellows!
- The AGM of the BBC Ltd, the licensed club as distinct from the Bowling Club, will be held in October and we’ll let you know the date when we have it.
- The next meeting of the Men’s Bowling Club Committee will be at 10.30 on Wednesday August 12th, and the draft minutes will be posted as soon as possible following,

Saturday Social Bowls
And what a wonderful day it was for bowls on Saturday with the sun in full bloom, and shock, shock . . . very little wind to speak of. Eighteen lucky bowlers ventured onto the Waratah Green in two triples and two pairs games.
On rink 7, Shane Harvey and Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis started very slowly against Ian ‘smooth’ Duncan and George Hindi to be 1 – 13 after eight ends and were wondering where the next shot was going to come from! Well, it came on the next end, then another on the twelfth, then a couple of threes got them to 9 – 19. Unfortunately for Gordon and Shane, that was as close as they got, as Ian and George steamed home with a fourteen shot margin of 27 – 13.
On the next rink, Charles ‘morse’ Coode, Graham Hartnup and the barber Ross were 3 all after four against Peter Hall, Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow and Richard ‘gazelle’ Denman, but then won the next five ends to be 10 – 3 to the good. Richard’s trio moved the score to 6 – 11, but then, by the nineteenth, were still five shots down. And then they struck gold as they swamped the barber’s canoe with six shots on the last two ends and grabbed victory at 17 – 16!
In the second pairs game, Barry Werfel and Mick ‘king’ Fisher won the first two ends against Arnie ‘dickie knee’ Lenczuk and Bob Edwards but then dropped twelve of the next thirteen ends to be staring down the barrel at 5 – 20. However, they salvaged some pride by collecting eight shots on the next two ends including a whopping SIX shotter, but the final score was 20 – 14 to Bob and Arnie.
In the final game visitor John Stoudt, Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee and Mr optimism Chris Forrester dropped the first two ends against Peter Marshall, Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt and Terry Norwood but by the fifth were up 7 – 3.With Graham in fine touch again this week, team Norwood then regained the lead, but by the thirteenth, in a really tight battle, it was 13 all. The tussle then continued in the back straight with Terry’s team edging their opposites on most ends. Despite some fine saves from Chris, the opposition prevailed and went to beer time 22 – 16 to the good.

Coach’s Corner No 6
So going back to the first Coach’s Corner, the “role of the lead”.
A good lead is worth his weight in gold. Never a truer phrase. The good lead, bowling bowls close to the jack sets a team up so that that lucky team will be very hard to beat. Bowlers who enjoy the role of lead and can do it well will always be in high demand when team competitions come around. They must enjoy the satisfaction of just drawing bowls to the jack rather than the more glamorous shots of the skips. They realize that their bowl may be displaced from its position close to the jack, especially as the quality of the game increases, but that they have done their job by placing pressure on the other team to come up with a difficult shot. Of course, one great advantage of the lead is that they normally have a clear road to the jack without a wall of bowls to navigate. Hurray for good leads. Always in demand.
