Wednesday Social Bowls
Thirty-six bowlers fronted for a roll on Wednesday, so the Match Committee sent six games of triples onto the Waratah Green.
On rink 7, Neville ‘the’ Tanner, Joe O’Donnell and Bob ‘wily’ Edwards were slow out of the blocks against Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt, Paul Rubie and Dave Charlesworth to be 1 – 6 after four ends, but by the sixth led 8 – 6. This became 10 – 9 on the tenth, but some solid ends put Bob’s trio 18 – 11 to the good by the fourteenth. This became 21 – 12, but Dave’s team rallied and moved to within four shots with four ends to play. However, a four shotter to team Edwards on the next end settled things and they ran out 26 – 18 winners.
In the next game, Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Peter Flight and Ross ‘trim’ Barber monstered Steve Bennett, Ian ‘smooth’ Duncan and the wily Owen Williams from go to whoa. Opening with a four shotter, they led 9 – 1 after five ends and then 19 – 3 after eleven. They were showing no mercy and were not about to take any prisoners . . . it was all about blood-letting!! However, Owen’s team showed a lot of ticker winning five of six ends to start the back half, but they were then blotted out over the last four. 28 – 11 was the final count.
On rink 9, Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Graham Hartnup and Peter ‘magic’ Morales were matched at the start by Charles Coode, Mike ‘fish’ Hook and Viv ‘low’ Gear, but the put together five ends so that by the ninth led 9 – 3. Viv’s trio got the score to within two, but a strong run early in the back half saw Peter’s trio ten in front at 18 – 8. Viv’s team grabbed a couple of ends, but team Morales finished the stronger to get home 23 – 12.
On the next rink, Arnie Lenczuk, gentleman Don Chapman and the cobbler Gordon Lewis were gasping for breath at 1 – 8 after six ends against Peter Marshall, Paul McInerney and Mick ‘king’ Fisher, but kicked into gear winning four of the next six ends to slightly narrow the gap. Mick’s team then kept them at arms length until a monstrous FIVE shotter followed by a single to team Lewis had the scores locked! With it all to play for, Mick’s trio ground out the last two ends to earn bragging rights at 19 – 14.
On rink 11, Peter Hall, Mark Barrow and Terry Norwood were belted on the first four ends, but grabbed a tasty SIX on the fifth and then a SEVEN two ends later to hit the lead. As the game entered the back half, it settled into a tight affair with neither side able to shake off the other – it was 21 all, 22 all and then 23 all with one to play! And it was Steve’s team that snaffled a single on the twenty-first to grab the honours.
In the final game, Alex Christlo, Shane Harvey and Richard ‘gazelle’ Denman were much the stronger in the first half of this match against Wal Markow, Russell Dunstan and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze to lead 7 – 1 after three ends, and then 15 – 5 after nine! The back half saw Clive’s team start to work their way into the game, and with one to play had closed the gap to four shots. Alas for them, Richard’s trio grabbed a welcome single on the last to get home 24 – 19.
