BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY APRIL 22nd (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some juicy titbits to start with:
- Members are reminded of the special general meeting which has been called for 9am Sunday April 26th at the Club for the membership to vote on the changes to the Constitution. It is important for the Club to tidy up the Constitution so your attendance at this meeting will be helpful.
- It seems that smoking outside of designated areas is still a problem, so, again, we remind smokers to keep to the assigned areas.
- Members are reminded that the BBC will not open on ANZAC Day until 12 noon in keeping with the tradition for the day. Given low interest, there will be no organised social bowls on that day.
- With ANZAC Day falling on a Saturday, there are no pennant competition matches set down for this weekend. Games will resume on May 2nd when Grade Seven travels to Picton, and Grade Six plays host to Bargo. Both grades need to win all three of the remaining matches to stay in the race for the title. Grade Seven is 11 points from the lead while Grade Six is 15 points back.
- Bowlers are reminded that the BBC Major Triples Championship will kick off on May 23rd, so it’s time to get yourselves organised and nominate your team for this prestigious competition.
Wednesday Social Bowls
Thirty-eight bowlers turned out for a roll on what, in the end was a pleasant autumn afternoon. It took a while, but eventually the clouds peeled back to provide a warmish, rain-free few hours. The Match Committee organised two games of pairs (which were assigned to the Wilson Green), and five of triples which rolled out on the Waratah.
On rink 9, Clive Hutchens, Alex Christlo and Richard ‘gazelle’ Denman opened brightly against Terry ‘pep’ Salter, Wal Markow and Joe ‘rusty nail’ O’Donnell to lead 7 – 1 after five ends, only to see the lead slashed to two by the eighth. Anything you can do . . . !?! Richard’s trio then took up the running again and by the fifteenth had the opposition in real trouble again at 17 – 8. This became 21 – 9, and then, showing no mercy, they put the opposition to the sword with an enormous FIVE shotter on the last! 27 – 12 was the final score.

The winning style of Richard ‘gazelle’ Denman!
On the next rink, Graeme ‘James’ Bond, Mike Hook and Clive ‘dasher’ Neutze snaffled singles on the first three ends against Russell Dunstan, Paul McInerney and Arnie ‘knee ok’ Lenczuk only to fall into a very deep chasm to loose the next nine ends on the trot!! Wow, how to survive?! Well, Clive and co dug in and, would you believe, the come-back began! They totted up end after end and began to reel team Lenczuk in so that by the twentieth they were only two behind. However, in a last gasp effort, Arnie’s team finally put a couple of shots in the head and got home 21 – 16. Phew! Great game!

‘Rosie’ in hand and knee ‘OK’, Arnie took no prisoners!!
On rink 10, Charles Coode, Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt and the evergreen Gordon Lewis were slow out of the blocks against Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Ted McPhee and the wily Bob Edwards to be 5 – 13 down after eight ends. However, ‘cobbler’ Gordon then cracked the whip and the team responded to win the next five ends and hold a lead of two shots at 15 – 13. Undaunted, Bob’s trio hit back, and when they grabbed a huge FIVE shotter on the sixteenth, they were five shots to the good. With Joel and Ted in fine fettle, team Edwards then swept home by seven shots at 23 – 16.

Magic wand in hand, it was great to see Ted back on the green!
In the next game, Peter Marshall, Ross ‘trim’ Barber and Viv ‘reverse’ Gear were slow out of the blocks against Grahame ‘dragon’ Denman, Graham Hartnup and el supremo Robin Staples to be 2 – 8 down after seven ends. However, Viv then flipped the ‘go’ switch for his team to sweep into action, and by the twelfth were only a single shot down. Then . . . ffffssss . . . the air went completely out of the Gear team tyres and they could manage only a two shot end in the run home. With Robin in control, team Staples sailed to the line 23 – 11 victors.

‘El Supremo’ Robin was leading the way again!
On rink 12, Neville Tanner, Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie and John ‘junior’ Cummins were matched early on by Jill ‘Hollywood’ Harwood, Mark Barrow and Owen ‘wily’ Williams to be 5 all after six ends. Junior’s team then edged to the lead and when they cracked a SIX shotter on the twelfth looked solid at 16 – 7. However, Owen’s team struck back and when they notched up their own FIVE shotter on the fifteenth, it was 16 all. Not to be outdone, team Cummins got their heads down to then win five of the remaining ends and collect bragging rights at 27 – 17. According to the experts, Jill and Neville were the standouts!

Great to see Jill back on the green and bowling well!
On rink 5 of the Wilson Green, Ian Duncan and Denis ‘rowdy’ Lees could win only one of the opening five ends against Neil Puckeridge and Stephen ‘robbo’ Day to be 4 – 7 on the score-card. The match then tightened and singles were the meagre offerings so that the score was 10 – 7 to Stephen and Neil by the eleventh. One end later it was 15 – 7 and the game had exploded into multiple scores! Well, doubles at least as these pairs exchanged ends down the home strait. By the twentieth, Ian and Denis had pared the lead back to four, but Stephen and Neil grabbed a three on the last to put the game to bed. All bowled well, with Ian and Neil nagging the jack constantly.

The ‘smooth one’ Ian had a solid day . . . again!
In the last game, Don ‘gentleman’ Chapman and Chris ‘XXXX’ Forrester blitzed the opening against Shane Harvey and Terry Norwood to lead 7 – 1 after four ends, but were then overshadowed over the next four to trail 8 – 9. Chris and Don then notched up a four shotter on the eleventh and when they grabbed another four on the fifteenth led 19 – 12. Digging in, Shane and Terry clawed the deficit back to three shots, but when they dropped yet another four on the eighteenth, they were almost down for the count. A couple of singles were never going to save them, and the final count was 26 – 18 to Chris and Don who each had the better of his opponent.

Unfortunately for his opponents, Chris is in great form at the moment!!
