BBC BROADCAST WEDNESDAY APRIL 29th (Terry Norwood at the desk)
Some odds and ends for a start:
- For those who haven’t yet heard, it is with great sadness that we have just learned of the passing of Lew Wilson, Patron of the Club and life member. Lew has been a wonderful, hard worker for bowls over many years, and his enthusiasm, encouragement and support will be greatly missed. Members will be kept informed of any arrangements. RIP Lew.
- Pennants resumes on Saturday May 2nd with Grade Six at home to Camden and Grade Seven travelling to Picton. Both teams, although currently running third in their competitions, are some chance of taking out their sections if they can win on the 2nd, and then win their last two matches.
- For those who were unable to attend, the special general meeting of the Club last Sunday unanimously passed the resolution to change the constitution and bring it up to date.
- The schedule for teams to be nominated for the BBC Championship Triples competition, commencing on Saturday May 23rd, is now posted on the notice board, so, come on bowlers, get organised and place your teams on the sheet.
- Also on the notice board is information about the Women’s Bowling Club ‘can assist’ charity day in which the men bowlers are invited to participate. It’s a really good one chaps so get your names down and support the women in this important event.
Wednesday Social Bowls
Thirty-six bowlers fronted for a roll on a lovely autumn afternoon, so the Match Committee organised six matches of triples, four assigned to the Waratah Green and two to the Wilson.
On rink 8, Alex Christlo, Charles Coode and John ‘junior’ Cummins started slowly against Barry Werfel, Graham Hartnup and Peter ‘miraculous’ Morales to be 2 – 6 after six ends and then 5 – 10 after ten. It was then that ‘junior’ inspired his men into action, barking advice and encouragement, so that they won five of the next six ends and took a lead of 13 – 11. However, they apparently then lost their fizz and when they conceded a horrible FIVE shotter, Peter’s trio had regained the momentum and charged home at 22 – 16. Fizzzz!!
In the next game, Russell Dunstan, Wal Markow and Joe ‘rusty nail’ O’Donnell were matched at the start by Col ‘Hawaii’ Stone, Shane Harvey and the wily Owen Williams to be 4 all after eight ends. The score was then five all, and then, in a very close struggle for supremacy, still locked up at 9 all by the sixteenth. Owen’s team then managed to sneak a single on the next end to get their hopes up, but from there however, team O’Donnell took over the running to take the last four ends, gap their opponents, and grab the match at 16 – 10.
On rink 10, Peter Marshall, Paul McInerney, and Mike Holmewood began with great authority to lead Grahame Denman, Neville ‘the’ Tanner and Gordon ‘cobbler’ Lewis 9 – 0 after three ends and have them against the ropes and gasping. However, the ‘cobbler’ cracked the whip, his team responded and when they gobbled up a FIVE shotter on the tenth, they had hit the lead. Wow, take that! Well, Mike’s team did, and they responded levelling the score at 15 all on the seventeenth. Mike’s team then sneaked out by three shots with two ends to play, but the cobbler’s trio grabbed a single and a double to level the game at 18 all. What a cracker!
In the last game on the Waratah, Clive Hutchens, Mike Hook and Arnie ‘suspect knee’ Lenczuk grabbed four shots on the first end but conceded a FIVE on the third to lose the lead to Mark Shelvey, Paul ‘ricochet’ Rubie and Bob ‘wily’ Edwards. However, another four to Arnie’s team on the seventh got them square, and then the teams were 11 all and 13 all on the thirteenth. Bob’s trio then took the lead and when they cracked a juicy SIX on the nineteenth it was all over bar the shouting! It ended up 25 – 16, and Arnie had to be content with a Guinness!
In the match on rink 4 of the Wilson green, Graham ‘Pisa’ Hunt, Ross ‘tiny’ Barber and Chris ‘XXXX’ Forrester were slow out of the blocks against Joel ‘AC/DC’ Hunt, Peter ‘Virgin’ Flight and the maestro Robin Staples until they notched up a four on the sixth end to take a 6 – 5 lead. This game then settled into a high quality encounter with plenty of chat and exciting bowls. The teams were locked at 9 all and then 13 all on the fifteenth until Chris’ trio edged ahead and with one end to play led by four. In a cracking last end, they were able to hold on as Robin’s team could grab a three only and fall just short. 21 – 20 in a great one.
In the last game, Mark ‘wheel’ Barrow, Barb Wainberg and Terry Norwood were on top early against Ted ‘Mr Ed’ McPhee, Neil Puckeridge and Mick Fisher to be 8 – 2 up after five and then 13 – 6 after nine. Barb was having a great game taking shots away from Neil and causing real problems. The score shifted to 16 – 8 on the thirteenth, and then whack . . . disaster struck . . . well Mick’s team smashed the leaders over four ends collecting fourteen shots and racing to a 22 – 16 lead!! Ouch!! Terry’s team then regained composure, got some shots in the head and with an end to play, had reduced the deficit to three. In a tight last end, Mick’s trio held on dropping only a double and so got home 23 – 22.
